Eek! Had no idea- we do have wasps- just not sure if they wear jackets or not... We don't have many down here, but we make up for it with every other plant, bug, and critter that gives you a nasty sting or bite. _____________________

re: wasps
where i live we have several types of wasps, including black wasps. ![]() however, the most feared is the "meat bee" (yellow jacket variety). it's actually a carnivorous wasp that WILL attack and take a bite out of you. and if you are swarmed, it is evil pain and you can be killed, although i've never heard of that actually happening. they nest underground, and filling the hole with water is not a solution because for some reason the water never ever fills the hole. they must account for that somehow that i'm not aware. we use smoke to chase them out and/or gas to burn them inside the nest. but, that is dangerous for obvious reasons, as well as the fact that you need to dress for attack. it's a last resort method. what we do here is fill an empty gallon milk container with soapy water, hang a string down the center hole with a piece of bacon attached to it. the bees go in and bite the bacon, and get all sort of drunk (best way i can explain it). it causes them to fall in a drunken stupor and they drown in the soapy water. on bad summer days we've had to change the water 5-6 times. on average summers we change it once a week. eating hamburgers and such at outside picnics is hazardous, because meat bees smell bbq cooking and tell all their friends. it's a big pain in the arse. i've only ever been bitten by a meat bee once, many years ago, and there was actually a piece of flesh removed from behind my knee.... i walked on a pile of sawdust out in the yard (we were building a fence) and apparently they had buried themselves in there without my knowledge. *shrugs* it hurt like hell for days, and after the redness and burning swelling subsided, i grew a small cyst that stayed for almost a year before it actually faded away again. some google images: the bees eating what seems to be a bat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXz2m329Dx4&feature=related a nest entrance ![]() _____________________

i just reread my post. it sounds much worse than the actuality. just get away from them and wait til they go away. they are naturally very aggressive, so swatting at them is not a good idea.
it's not as bad as it sounds. i was just trying to give factual information and it came out sort of scary sounding. LOL we just hang meat bee traps all around and they pretty much leave us alone. _____________________

We have a real problem with the africanized bees down here.
Last summer a swarm had nested under a trailer at the stables where my wife keeps her horses. Somebody stirred them up and 3 people ended up in the hospital. And the horse next to ours was stung so bad that it died the next morning. _____________________

We interrupt the wasp/bee/yellow jacket discussion with this weekend update!
This weekend was actually a bit quieter than last. Still did quite a bit, but a lot of it was in the workshops. I finished up a long project to get all of my products into boxes that look like, well, for-real boxes. Was a ton of work, but really makes it look nice in the stores. Especially the Bay City one. It also has gotten me in place f'r puttin all my stuff on XStreet. Gettin' close on that. I also did a bunch of custom fish f'r 7 Seas fishing on Livingtree. Did a whole series of "plush fish," an a "topiary fish" that might be th' cutest thing I even maded. I also took a lot of opportunities for quiet downtimes. For one, I finally made it to Verdigris, which is quite pretty. I did not take a lot of piccies there cuz, well, so many others have. Also, I was havin' a heck of a time getting the piccies I wanted while also capturing enough of the build. I was pretty happy with this one, though! ![]() Saturday night, we had a big fishing tournament on Livingtree. Kinda restarting our fishing tournaments there. That was what all those customs were about, f'r one. Anyways, we had a good crowd, but I couldn't stay. I had another crowd waiting for me on Argos Hawks' region. Fireworks show time! Here's a shot close to the end (but before the finale) ![]() Much, much later in the evening, I heard about another SLRR test run, an made my way over. Was a rough night on the mainline, with trouble at jes about every sim crossing. The next mornin, I started off with a blimp ride from Bay City's mooring all the way to the airship pad in Abbotts. About a 26 region run, so much shorter than the SLRR run, but still a good test of things after the last night. Very few troubles, too, so I guess last night was jes "special." I also took some more time to jes take piccies. Like this one I shot back in th' new Tableau. Teachin' the flowers to sing. ![]() ![]() I also took my old space ship out for a spin. A gift a log time ago from Lumiere Noir. Reports of UFO activity over Shermerville, Nova Albion, and Bay City? well... it was jes me. Or maybe a weather balloon. Swamp gas? ![]() I messed a lot with Inventory on Sunday. For those who dunno how daunting this is f'r me the last time I really combed my inventory was February of 2007 -- an I have about 25k more items in there. There's things I'd never even looked at or worn, like freebies from Hair Fair, two Burning Lifes, SL5B, SL4B, grid-wide hunts, etc. Heck, some stuff I did not know I had, I'd never seen before, and that I have no idea where th heck they came from. It's like Christmas morning in my own inventory! This meant that my avvie was again up in the workshops, often without hair, glasses, or even shoes as I randomly tried on yet another untouched item. Then I came across one 'do from Hair Fair. It required this piccie: ![]() G'mornin an g'night, Thread-folks! _____________________

Did anybody else feel bees crawling up their legs which reading those bee/hornet/little bastards stories? I totally respect bees & wasps. Hornets on the other hand, are EVIL!! Ever been attacked by a nest of 'em? Lil' F*cks will fly down your shirt, stinging & biting. They'll follow for blocks!!! And no! I did NOT do anything!! I was mowing a hillside & came across a nest in the ground that a racoon or something got into. I moved so they thought I must be guilty. So yea, I've endured over 1 dozen stings & bites by these flying creatures of satan! I still get creeped out watching those old 70s movies about Killer Bees!!! *correction* make that YellowJackets, not hornets. Either way, I frickin' HATE HATE HATE BUGS!!!! Crap! Ever have one of those yellow-green spiders drop on you? Or an earwig bite you? Or one of those big hairy hunting spiders drop on you?? I scream like a lil' girl when "attacked" by an insect. Few things freak me out more than a bug intent on attacking me!! BUGS MUST DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE!!!!!!!!!!! _____________________

Ummm.... Not really feeling like breakfast anymore this morning... Anyone else want to take the duty today? A couple of things before Pie disappears for the time being.
Q: Did you know where someone who can't pwonounce the letter "r" goes if they want to find out how heavy a Blue Whale is? A: A railway station and more apposite Q: Where would someone go if they wanted to find out how heavy a pie was? A: Somewhere over the rainbow. Pie (Say the next line of the song quickly) |
