I think the 'non-southern' way of saying it is 'tuna sandwich'....I think. This is a guess from a non-yankee.

Never really thought about it, but maybe it's because tuna is a fish...so what other kind of tuna would there be... tuna beef? tuna poultry?

From: Maureen Boccaccio LOL! Never really thought about it, but maybe it's because tuna is a fish...so what other kind of tuna would there be... tuna beef? tuna poultry? AH HA!!!!! I think I understand the confusion now. Let me try to explain. If you took the flesh/meat from a tuna and made a sandwich with it, the same way you would with something like turkey or roast beef, that would be a "tuna sandwich". "Tuna fish" is a concoction that is made with tuna, celery, mayonaise, eggs, etc. Slap some of that on bread and you have a "tuna fish sandwich". I'm sure someone will reply stating that it is called "tuna casserole", "tuna salad", or something like that. However, in the world accroding to Tex, it's called "tuna fish". I hope that made everthing as clear as mud.

Yeah, I'm with you, Tex. I've always just called it a tuna fish sandwich. Does anyone ever have a tuna sandwich...one with nothing added to the tuna???

Born in NY, raised in CA, now resident of Texas. When referring to the sandwich, it's just a tuna sandwich, no matter what you add to it. Referring to tuna alone, it's tuna fish. However, you can tune a piano, but you can't tune a fish.

This is why I prefer Haddock. Too much controversy and confusion with tuna.

From: 3Ring Binder love this pic. thanks for the updates, Kaimi. i haven't watched even one leg of the race, but i intend to this afternoon if my schedule will cooperate with me (i hope it's on today). It'll be on Versus live at 1:00pm PST then again at 8:00 and 11:00. It's a 15 mile time trial today in Solvang. Apparently Fabian Cancellara was pretty sick when he won the prologue time trial on Sunday and he had to abandon early in the day on Monday because he couldn't stop vomiting. But most of the other very best timetrialists in the world will be in it today so I'm expecting it to be very exciting towards the end. Oops. see what happened? You got me started.

When I was a kid there was a big fleet of tuna boats in San Diego. The fishermen were Portuguese immigrants who lived just over the hill from me and whose kids went to my high school. (Like that makes me an expert - I haven't eaten meat, including tuna for over 30 years.)

From: Tex Nasworthy Laughing? Why, everything on that list sounded perfectly normal to me. Seriously though, maybe I'm having an off day, or maybe I'm just dense, but what the heck is wrong with saying "tuna fish sandwich"? Nothing. I'm from Brooklyn originally. All there was growing up was a "tunafish sandwich". No such thing as "tuna" as in a piece of fish, like steak for instance. I wouldn't have recognized it as a fish per se as a kid at all. Serve it to me chopped fine, lots of mayo, maybe some onion, on toasted white or rye. Keep it simple. Heaven. Now, being the foodie that I've become I still refer to it as a tunafish sandwich. Although if given a choice, I prefer imported tunafish from Italy over Bumblebee, which actually looks more like a tuna steak; comes in small glass jars preserved in olive oil. Makes an incrediblely fresh tasting sandwich or use it for Niscoise salads - mind blowing. A hunk of raw fish, now IS tuna steak. Or sushi when sliced thin, rolled in rice, or sashimi if no rice. All just as yummy. Damn, I want fish for dinner now. Good thing I didn't freeze the catfish I picked up last night
