Cycling!!!
The Tour of California started today with an exciting prologue. This was a virtually flat 2.4mile (3.8k) time trial, on the streets of downtown Sacramento, to determine who will wear the leader's yellow jersey in the Stage 1 race tomorrow. The only tricky parts were a 180 degree bend and a couple of 90 degree turns.

The riders go out onto the course one at a time and race the clock.

The guy who won The Tour of California last year, Levi Leipheimer (USA), who rides for the Astana team of Kazakhstan goes last and the guy who probably has the least chance of winning goes first. So as the day progresses the riders are getting better and better.
The last few riders were some very exciting big time cyclists.

I acurately (but not particularly cleverly) picked the winner, (1) Fabian Cancellara (Switzerland), Danish Team Saxo Bank, who came in at 4minutes:32.909seconds.

(2) Levi came in second at 00:01.204 slower.
(3) and David Zabriskie (USA), USA Team Garmin, was third at 00:02.648slower

My own favorite rider, George Hincapie, USA, of USA Team High Road came in sixth.
And Lance Armstrong, in the second race of his comeback (The first was the Tour Down Under last month) came in a tenth.

Whoot Whoot! I'm pretty excited. The last stage, a week from tomorrow will be here in San Diego County and I'm looking forward to seeing part of it live.

Edited: Southern Californian Floyd Landis who won the 2006 Tour de France and then had it taken away when he tested positive for a banned substance made his debut appearance today after being banned from the sport for two years. He's very popular with many people, including me, and looked good today. (He's also undergone hip replacement surgery since 2006.)
