...Trivia Fact #1: Tug-o-War was an Olympic sport from 1900-1920.
Trivia Fact #2: Uzbekistan's Bronze Medal was won by Rishod Sobirov in Men's 60kg Judo.
Trivia Fact #3: Ara Abrahamian of Sweden disputed the judges' decision in 84kg Greco-Roman Wrestling and left his Bronze Medal on the podium in disgust and protest.

Thank you for the daily update, Oryx.

From: Vampaerus Wysznik
Ara Abrahamian should be disqualified and banned from future competition for unsporting behavior. I would expect that in the NBA, not an olympic athlete representing his country.

Yeah, that did not seem to be very Olympic-sportsmanlike conduct. I gather he was still displeased about the results of his semifinal match.

If you would like it I am happy to give it up for you Maureen. You *have* kept me in coffee and breakfast things for some considerable time.

Hey! It's Friday; let's head to the beach. Claire hasn't been there in a while.

Here's a little breakfast you can take with you:

Plenty of room for everyone! We can get the cabana boys/girls to set up these for you:

So what about the The 1972 Olympic men's basketball team?

The U.S. players voted unanimously to refuse their silver medals; several team members have directed in their wills that their heirs are never to accept the medals, even posthumously.

Wow, you know, I'd completely forgotten about that!! That sure was a politically-charged controversy, wasn't it?

Yay, it's Friday!

I've been stuck in a hotel room all week on a business trip with crappy wireless. Finally get to go home.

I am now reevaluating the word "revamp". ;)

still sore. regardless of what country they come from. poor form. The Olympics are supposed to be about putting aside politics for a little while and just having some good natured fun. This country is *largely* to blame for that failing time after time. Not the only one, but a major contributor of teh dramaz.

*Begins personal rant*

The innocence and sportsmanship of the Olympics have been long gone...since Berlin 1936. Avery Brundage made sure of that. From that point it pretty much became a sort of cold war, especially in the 60's and 70's where the Eastern Bloc countries were using what were essentially professional athletes, while Western countries sent amatuers and college kids.

The 72 Munich games were a disgrace. They should have been at the very least paused when the Israeli Team was murdered, but Mr Brundage was a known anti semite so they just played on. As unsportsmanlike as the US Basketball Team may have been, the event surrounding the officiating of that game were disgraceful as well.

The Games have been nothing but a media fueld, jingoistic, flag waving, money grub, starting with the thieves are the IOC. A bunch of Internationally Sanctioned Political Hacks, a lot like the UN, the only difference being the IOC has been doing it a bit longer.

*End personal rant* BTW this rant wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, I know a lot of you are enjoying the games, so just ignore it.

Every 4 years I'm a bit disgusted with women's gymnastics, amongst other events. These girls start at crazy early ages (like 3 in China they were reporting). They have no say in whether they want to participate in an entire childhood of grueling body destroying education stealing training. Then at 14 (supposedly) they are put until the spotlight of the world. No pressure.

To me it's just wrong. If you want to offer a teenager the opportunity to dedicate a large part of their lives to something, that's amazing. If you conscript a 3 year old... that's horrible.

The commentator was saying that a Chinese diver had to be pushed into the pool by her coach when she first started, because she was too scared. So basically she was earmarked as a diver in early childhood before she'd even done a dive.

Some of these events shouldn't exist, or should be changed to up the age to something reasonable.

That's my rant. ;)

The Olympics have been getting a very dirty rep, and justifiably so IMHO, but I think they are taking steps to remendy that when they can. Still, bad calls and nationalism will alwys be present.

In the end, the olympics still serve to let athletes who would not normally be seen compete. Who would go see a professional swimming meet? If not for the olympics, no one would know who Phelps was. If not for the olympics, the only gymnastics we would likely see would be at a circus.

I don't know how you can take the politics out of it, but don't toss the whole ideal because some exists. Baby/bathwater thing.

It was a perfect set up - I'm wearing red in the pictures taken earlier, later you are off taking pictures but I'm not there. Why? Why obviously I'm the one that was wearing red so . . . I must have been eaten by a rock. hehe

No I am not advocating doing away with them. The athletes should have their place and should be commended and those that wish to can cheer them on. I just ignore the whole thing as best I can.

Good thing I'm not drinking coffee at this moment.

*Raises her eyebrow*. Logical, very logical. *I should be wearing blue when I say that*.
