No! i think its wonderful and sign of high intelligence to ask yourself questions. But i think debating with everyone, insisting this world is one thing or another is not productive and creates conflicts. Its a matter of perspective and personal choice. So its kinda pointless to debate. But more specifically, when people insist and try to force an environment that reflects only their perspective about what this world is, then it is also very agressive and intrusive to others. That was my gripe. Sorry if i was confusing.

Basically this is how I would describe it...

to a business minded friend... "it's a working example of micropayment ventures"

to a reporter... "it's a virtual world with unlimited possibilities"

to my grandma... "it's a game"

I don't know. Is the sweet smell of a rose an inherent part of human experience or merely a cultural norm? In some cultures a dog is man's best friend; in others, dogs are vermin. In some cultures the colour white signifies purity; in others, death. Where there are cross-cultural differences in the perceptions of a 'thing', surely the respective words to label those things carry different connotations.

If a rose blooms in the forest, and there is nobody there, does it still smell?

Is a lot of games you cant "win", only get a higher score on.

The Space Invaders always get you in the end.

Rather than "rule-enforced fairness", I should perhaps have said "removal of unfairness".

Role playing generally features at least abstraction of skill and removal of unfairness. If it does not feature fairness then usually most the people who are on the "losing" side of the unfairness will leave.

Using SL for sex probably features these too.. certainly removal of unfairness (RL unfairness of different levels of physical attractiveness).

In any social setting you have rules right. RL or in a VR where people roleplay Hence is still a game. Because you don`t want your RL exposed to the wrong people and getting into your rl. Hence its a game.

..but is it the rose .. or you .. that smells?

"I have a dog with no nose"
"How does he smell?"
"Awful!"

A common usage of the word 'game' is as a noun for fun, no? SL is immense fun. For whatever the dictionaries list at any moment of time, language evolves. The Oxford English Dictionary adds words every edition. They modify others. SecondLife is a new genre. It should be allowed some lattitude in description.
