Is SL a "game" or another word?

Please everyone keep Brenda in this thread so she doesn't troll my other posts. Thanks.

Oh and ?? game or platform? Its a game. Only games these days (except consoles) are getting deeper all the time and more immersive, and you have to redefine what you mean by 'game'.

Serious enough? Trying my best here :)

If you'd enable your Forum PM I could just stalk you there.

If SL is a game for you, so be it. You can do (almost) everything you want within the SL metaverse, including roleplay.

Not if it involves 3 short avatars, a 2 foot cylindrical prim and germans with cameras :p

world in a game :)

Personally, I think World, but I'd have to agree w/ Alicia Sautereaus' comment.
I have friends that think and use SL as a game
and then, also friends that find it a real place, real World.

Linden Tossing. Hmmmmm..may be better than those Strip Uno games you've been running.

I'm thinking along the lines of a definition of games as a medium rather than just the way that medium is used. One of Warren Spector's (of Deus Ex fame) mottos is "We make worlds, not film sets." I think the worry that too many games try to take the player and make them the star of some 'interactive film' is a valid concern.

So when games become virtual worlds, does the line between the two concepts exist any more? Does the distinction even make sense?

So perhaps what the question is really asking is not whether SL is a game or not, but whether SL is a fictional virtual world, or a real virtual world.

In that, I'd tend towards the latter.

I'd agree with that, except arguing's more fun.

I find it hard to accept that the philosophy on that hasn't advanced since the Elizabethan era. Whereas nomenclature may well be a man-made strategy to aid categorisation in human brains unfit to deal with infinite diversity, there must at least be room for doubt that 'nominative determinism' has some basis in reality.

Whoever said it was a "Life Simulator" is correct. And hence, if it is a simulator, it is really a game. No points to score you say? Sure there are, they're called $Lindens.
