Perhaps if some of the voicers consider that for a moment it might help them understand why some feel voice is intrusive.

Back in 1998 when Chat rooms were much newer as a social media we passed around phone numbers a lot.
People would bring huge amounts of their RL into the chat room, so much a lot of people would intrude up in other's RL business.
One person from the chat room described the whole situation as incestuous.

From: Monalisa Robbiani ... when you assume that the average user will just speak into a microphone and by doing that tell everyone around them their gender, age and location I don't assume that the "average user" is using voice -- practically nobody does in the areas that I go to. And even if I did use voice, how does that automatically tell them my age and location, not to mention that it is totally possible to spoof the gender in voice also.

Just to be on record, I don't mind voice for one-on-one conversations, but I prefer text for group conversations. It's less hectic, and gives me time to think about my posts. And even in one-on-one IMs, I like text. I enjoy reading, and re-reading the chat logs. |
