From: Ramus Overlord Now im sure there are some big jerkoff men who would want you to get on voice, but honestly why would you be hanging around with people like this? If you consider this person a friend, you should reconsider your friends and where you are hanging out. And then of course.. there is always the mute button. Always a great set of points. I agree completely.

From: Deandra Watts I'm kinda new to all this and terribly non-techy, but if you never encountered a person with a voice changer in a game, how do you know you'd be able to tell (and always can) if you never encountered one?
Maybe I just haven't had enough coffee yet.. Because I'm a computer geek, and I've heard voice changers in action many times--through the internet, and in RL. It's extremely rare to run across voice changers "in games"--that was my main point. Sorry to be confusing. Maybe "never" is too strong a word. Let's just say it's Uber-rare... And I apologize if my style of read and quote is annoying. It's the way I do it. I figure, either you get a super long set of quotes and replies, or a handful of replies...it's pretty much the same I guess...although, you have to see my ugly ass signature a few more times.

From: Michael Bigwig For the record, I've been playing "games" of all genres with voice, and I've NEVER encountered a person with a voice changer...in over a decade of play. And I'm darn sure I would be able to tell...you always can. Please try to explain - In an actual statement that matters. How this affects my point.

From: Colette Meiji Please try to explain - In an actual statement that matters. How this affects my point. No problem.. You were quoted to say: "Argent posted a pretty good point a while back. In games where voice is widespread that he was familair with - there were lots of attempts to "out" people who used voice changers. This would seem to agree with Elgyfu's experince that people accused her of using a voice changer." I was trying to illustrate that people don't use voice changers in games...games of any genre. I'm sure there is the random rare run-in...but overall, you won't find anyone on VOIP using a voice changer. What this means to the topic, and your comment is: people shouldn't be calling you out about using a voice changer. Unless you obviously are. If people ARE calling you out about using a voice changer they are either immature, ignorant, or simply just trolling. No one should be getting "called out" about using a voice changer if they aren't. Voice changers are completely obvious...if someone says your voice sounds like something it's not...they are either being matter of fact...or an ass. So far in my travels around the grid with voice, things have been fine. As long as you stay away from high traffic, griefer inhabited land...you'll be fine.

Okay - but it still happens as Elgyfu (and Argent) were saying. I understand that most people being jerks over voice chat are mainly just jerks. It doesnt make it less annoying. Or make it not happen. I got a lot of flak for saying some people will be jerks about voice - was called Paranoid. Now that it turns out people are starting to be jerks about it, people want to pretend like its a minor irritant which doesnt matter. Im not saying that Voice should be removed from SL becuase of these people .. Im just saying it happens and will continue to happen and People who act like it wont are not being realistic. From: Michael Bigwig No one should be getting "called out" about using a voice changer if they aren't. Of course no one should be getting "called out" for using a voice changer if they arent - the fact they are though is what annoys people. Not to mention that this goes RIGHT BACK to the original poster's point. IF voice changers are entirely obvious then that does - to some extent - affect Disclosure. I dont think people hearing your voice online is necessirly bad. Unless You were to run into people who recognize your voice that you dont want knowing you are doing whatever .. But it does pertain to the OP's point. From: Michael Bigwig So far in my travels around the grid with voice, things have been fine. As long as you stay away from high traffic, griefer inhabited land...you'll be fine.
This seems a bigger problem. Basically 'Stay away from large groups of people then you wont be harassed' It throws a lot of fun out the window, doesnt it? It outlines one of the basic social problems Voice brings into the mix. In voice enabled areas, activities which involve large groups of strangers are now less viable as something to do without potential problems. (such as clubbing)

And I'm darn sure I would be able to tell...you always can. I tried yahoo voice chat once, and a big amount of chatters used voice changers. It was quite normal to do, mostly to cover your identity. We all use screen names and not our real names, avatars and not our photos, so it is perfectly logical to use a screen voice and not our real voice. SL is not a multiplayer game where voice chat is used in the background to discuss which target to shoot. SL is a social environment where communication itself is part of the persona we create.

From: CobaltBlue Mill The days of the opposite-sex alt may seem numbered. However I'm sure it's only a matter of time before someone figures out how to implement pitch shifting technology into SL, allowing people to change their voice to anything from a soprano to bass. It is already easy to alter one's voice drastically before it reaches the application (on Mac at least, there must be something that allows this in Windows too, right?). People seeking reassurance through voices may be asking for trouble :/

Coletee: Jerks are jerks with or without voice. They will (and do) grief you with or without voice. Can we not agree on this? And if we CAN agree on this...what are we arguing about? Also, I didn't say, "Stay away from large groups of people then you wont be harassed." That's putting words in my mouth. I said, "As long as you stay away from high traffic, griefer inhabited land." There is a big difference between these two statements. Agreed? Monalisa: I'm not talking about Yahoo Chat--however, isn't Yahoo Chat an IM program for friends? Why are you guys role playing so much? You make it sound like Yahoo Voice Chat is filled with role playing people that do everything they can do hide their real identity...seems strange for an IM program made for friends. I could be wrong. Also, you said, "SL is not a multiplayer game where voice chat is used in the background to discuss which target to shoot. SL is a social environment where communication itself is part of the persona we create." I've made it perfectly clear in many posts that VOIP envelopes ALL genres of gaming. Not just team-based killing games. And in all the genres I've played (and worked with) very few people use voice changers. Man, it's nice out today. I want to leave early.

Thats why I used SINGLE quotation marks - that was my take on what you said. I dont see a large difference between large groups of people you dont know and high traffic griefer land unless you carry it to the extreme of ONLY camp fests areas. Which have in effect built in Ultra-Lag protection from griefers.

From: Michael Bigwig Do you have ANY idea what I log in as? What my alts are? Who I am, and what I do? Then please, for the love of linden, don't assume and belittle.
Thanks in advance. Nothing in my post implies that I am assuming anything Michael, and I would love for you to point out where you are being belittled. Oh that's right. To disagree with you is to belittle you, as is suggesting that you are not necessarily in a position to know everything about everything. However, considering the sheer volume of your posts on this subject Michael, I would not be entirely bonkers to assume that if you had spent a significant portion of your time as a female avie that did not voice you would have stated that as proof of what you know rather than relying on generalities and fielding request after request from people wondering how you justify your position. It would have made the things you say a little easier to swallow. For the record also, most people I know named "Michael" are guys. Not a horrid assumption to make for me here. And your insight into the people you've judged is just as limited as anyone else's yet it never stops you.

And didn't Bigwig say something about having some connection to acting (maybe not, so many threads to wade through, can we have a non-voice thread someday?)?

And I've played men, women, vampires, and aliens. So, I've been around.
