Actually I keep expecting some buff new marine recruits to jump out of it at any time and begin training at your plot with you stood in front giving orders. *laughs*

Transcripts
06-11-2009 21:06
Yesterday, much of Blue's office hour was again devoted to the forums, and he also had a one-on-one convo with Brenda (heretofore to be known as The Chosen One  ). He's okayed distribution of both transcripts, and they've been sent out as notices in the group, "The Forum Cartel". Even if you're religiously opposed to the group, you could still just join it for 5 minutes and pull them down inworld, or IM me and I'll get to it tomorrow sometime. I'm too lazy to clean out my PM box tonight, so go with an IM please.

The transcript of Blue's June 3rd office hour on the Forums is here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Blue_Linden/Office_Hour_Transcripts/June_3rd%2C_2009

These are my notes after reading Blue's office hour of 6/10/2009. Corrections are welcome.

Blue:

- new forum categories will likely match the old
- as new forums are ramped up they will have a broader feature set
- features will be added gradually for fear of introducing bugs
- (some features are standard and some are "home made";)
- some discussion of forum avatars; Blue acknowledges that many people don't want their inworld profile linked to their forum profile
- "Legally, LL can't tell a volunteer to do certain thing, work specific hours, or oversee anyone."
- third-party moderators have better coverage, standards
- moderators shouldn't ban; they can escalate to RESI team
- "I wanted to add to last week's discussion when we talked about whether or not forum action should reflect on inworld account. I followed up and learned that there's a legal aspect to that as well. ToS violations have to carry same discipline across the board for all LL spaces. If someone does something illegal on forums, they are removed from inworld."
- "What's kind of funny to me... hearing for years how much people hated our forums upgraded or not, and then announcing replacement and hearing how much people love our forums. lol."

Residents:

- third party moderators need linden oversight
- unified login is needed; having to log in to several systems is a PITA
- some talk of differentiating users who are basic, premium, estate owners
- forums should be for all, not only those who have paid accounts
- premium accounts should have benefits
- will group forums (such as Nova Albion's) still exist in the new framework?

.

I'm reading that transcript and one thing jumped out at me:
From: someone
[16:19] Gayathri Linden: sorry, what's BBCode
[...]
[16:19] Blue Linden: hehe....BBCode is the formatting language for old blogs
[...]
[16:20] Gayathri Linden sadly has not used the Old Blogs much. :)

Actually it's the other way around up here. The Government is now the Corporation.
Either way, it means we all get to waste time at work now.

That must have been another day. My notes are for the one on 6/10/2009.

I mean, what you said is still bad news. Just from another day. And "sadly" with a smiley face?

well prisoners could expand their skillset beyond simple license plates. theres a vast source of free labour available for government motors.
Sorry, extreme liberals have already ruled that we cannot make our prisoners work for free anymore.

It is abusive.

I had heard that he posted the transcripts, but was unsuccessfully searching the blog for them before finally sending mine out.

nvm - I see that those are the ones from last week, the 3rd of June.

Some additional points that I noted were:

The new forums will NOT look like the current Forum Answers blog crap that they now have in Beta -- though I have no clue why they bother to Beta something that is not what we will be seeing.

The new forums will have most, if not all, of the features that we have now, but they might not all be there right away.

We might not have *all* of the current sub-forums what we currently have.

The moderation by third party is not a done deal yet and we might still be doing a ResMod program.

Ultimately, Premiums should get some sort of benefits added, but Basics should not lose anything they already have.

i just hope we get a forum and not a blog..if it is a step up from this one or acts the same as this one i'll be happy..just so we can continue..features are nice but really we've been doing without them for so long that a step up to me would be more smiles..
i just don't want a blog form of communication for a forum..
that's bleh

although more goodies would be nice too hehehehe

SL Answers beta is a bad, bad thing. I still think it's LL's vision for the future. Otherwise there was no sense in their putting it out for us to see.

If they wanted a forum, they would have used forum software.

Imagine if they told us they were previewing a new model for sims and invited us to go preview it, and it turned out to be a flat, cartoony, 2D thing with stick-figure avatars. And they said, "Features are coming. It won't look like this!"

If it won't look like that, why are you showing it?

I realize that Blue has said otherwise, the whole CNET thing, but I am looking at what I've been SHOWN.

The new forums will NOT look like the current Forum Answers blog crap that they now have in Beta -- though I have no clue why they bother to Beta something that is not what we will be seeing.
Another possibility: they could have BOTH the new forums and SL Answers. SL Answers would therefore replace Resident Answers as the first place newbies go for a quick answer. Anyone needing more specific help would end up on the forums.

If that turns out to be the case, I'll be pushing for a united navigation structure that places SL Answers as just another category in the entire Forums + Blog Discussions set of threads.

AAAND, then we would need two new areas added to the Forum structure given to Blue:

"Life in SL" --- The place formerly known as Resident Answers, where "Is it cheating"? and "What kind of land is right for meeee?" and "How do I improve my sales?" goes. I think these just are not handleable in the SL Answers format. There's got to be a better name for this, thots?

"Off Topic" -- No, this was not in the original proposal. Although most folks who replied to the thread(s) discussing forum structure wanted Off Topic, Qie and I decided that including it would jeopardize adoption of the rest of the structure, given the political climate at the time. I would still argue for not permitting threads on politics, religion and other flashpoint topics. A sane moderator would tolerate occasional mention of these, so long as the thread did not focus on them.

SL Answers beta is presented as the future. Blue says it isn't, but everything in writing and everything that LL has officially put forward is about SL Answers beta.

just wishful thinking on my part..the forums had become part of my sl..half will be gone now because really i don't see moving to an outside forum ran by a user..
there is too much bias in those..where here even though there are no mods everyone still had the same power as the next even if they did not realize it..
blogs the comments fall into a deep pit of easy to control topics and we lose a big part of sl community bonding..
blogs are cold and hidden..
at least here people put up links to the blogs if something important showed..
we lose that as well now and so much more..

Actually, straight old forums were the first or second application Jive Software released, I think. LL just chose to put up the shinier blog stuff first.

See: http://forums.oracle.com

Oracle moderates that site so it's very dry, no lolcats! but as you see it's a pretty straightforward classic forum, based on the same software suite - Clearspace - used for LL's blogs.

According to her profile, Gayathri Linden is a program manager. That's a very nose-to-the-grindstone job, where you spend ALL your time making sure that everyone who is actually doing work gets it done on time and has what they need to finish. So she should be spending very little of her time, other than dropping in on the occasional meeting, with residents. Blue, however, is a user experience specialist, so he spends a lot of time with us.
