Never mind the New Forum, what the Hell is going on with this one today?

And I wonder if it would make sense to keep ONE thread alive...or undead as it were. I'll investigate.

you are very very likable! :D

Is there some way to make a thread where people could ask quick questions? Sometimes I want to ask something that is simple

for instance people use ETA (edited to add)

doesn't seem worth the electrons to crack open a whole THREAD just to ask one little thing.

In the same way the undying thread is purely social

another thread could be purely short questions.

Does that seem worthwhile?

Grr.. Blue has PMs turned off.. :P

The Zindra blog post really needs some LL attention, Blue!! You (LL, not you personally) have started the timer running, it's already 1/2 way to being expired, and there has been no LL response to the questions asked.

That and the $#!@ing blog software has stopped showing new comments so even if a Linden did reply, I don't think we'd be able to see it.

Please, Blue. Please, please, please, make a new thread here in the good ol' forums for comments and answers. The new blog software just is not up to the task.

Not one to take a snarling hedgehog lightly: Blue has this funky web thing at http://bluelinden.wufoo.com/forms/contact-blue/ that may work to contact him.

/me wonders if that's a good sign or not.

Yeah, i did shut off my PMs because I go through periods where I'm not checking forums all the time and I don't want people sitting and waiting for a reply from me. I Definitely encourage using the Wufoo form on my inworld profile's web tab or emailing me directly at blue@lindenlab.com. Hard for me to miss an email for more than a day or two :)

As to the Zindra thread being closed, I think that was because the team was going to start using the tickets to work with folks individually. If you haven't yet, you can file one from the support portal.

Not touching on the actual new forum content but if you want to see an example of what a good forum should look like you need go no further than look at the one that Linden Labs is shutting down here:

https://xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=index

I think personally, that SL's entire website/forum (with the exception of their snazzy front-page) is an absolute assault on the senses. And with the SL forums broken nearly since their inception and I was told by a Linden it would be too much work to upgrade their PHP is crazy. I upgraded from 1 to 2, and from 2 to version 3 in 10 minutes each! There was nothing hard about it, click a couple buttons, then you wait for the server to archive/transfer your posts over. Of course, it would take longer to migrate these forums but the SOP is the same, click a couple buttons. Unless there's just something really wrong with your front-end/control panel. IMHO, the broken forums don't present SL's best foot forward.

Please don't have blue in the new forums, not even light blue. Even now, I'm developing a tick just posting this.

Don't make the new forums a blog! Please! Not even remotely blog-ish! In fact, better to integrate the blog into the new forums, or do what SLUniverse.com does and have a bot that automatically pulls new blog posts and re-posts them in their forum for discussion.

Also, in the new forums please consider for the Scripting forum having them broken down into categories. Currently, if you're looking for a script in the script library it's insane for the most part.

In this forum, an online LSL script repository:
http://www.phpbbserver.com/thescriptshack

Scripts are broken down into categories, and help requests in another sub-board.
Please, take a quick look at it and think, why not? That's a good idea! Because it is!

Sub-boards for vehicles, particles, door/windows, etc. and so on, you get the idea.

/me notices a new blog saying that they're shooting the slex forums in favor of the blog stuff which, near as I can tell, is still pretty broken and horrible.

Blog comments are, of course, closed.

https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/blog/2009/07/15/xstreet-sl--upcoming-changes-to-support-forums

/me wonders if LL is reading this post and if they know that closed comments always sounds a lot like "we don't care what you think."

Thanks for the link - I'm going to spend a little time poking around over there.

The unintended result of LL's new forum may be a big boost to independent forums like The Script Shack, the Forum Cartel's, and others. If SLU was work-safe, I'd be over there. (Maybe I can surf it using Opera, and shut off all images. There's a thought.)

(sigh)

I don't want to go there, either. It's just that with the forum closing and the crappy SL Answers as a replacement...

Thanks for the tips, though.

Remove the forums from Xstreet and what you're doing is removing the community. Remove the community and you remove sales as well. Oh but they're moving the forums! And I'm sure everyone is going to flock to the new blogorum. (cough)

It was quite irritating that this announcement was squirreled away on the blog and not even featured and that it wasn't even announced on the Xstreet forums as well, and conveniently the blog announcement was closed to comments, which is too bad because I'm sure there were many people who wanted to chime in with their thoughts.

So far, LL's ventures into forums has not been pretty, whether it's this forum which has been borked nearly since it's inception or whether it's the blog, where maybe you can have a say or maybe you can't and to boot from what myself and others have noticed suffers from terribly laggy coding. It also depends on whether comments are 'wanted' on the issue as to if it's open to commenting. That's not a blog, that's a closed Announcements board.

But the whole Xstreet thing, that's just a forum. It's not a huge deal looking at the bigger picture. I hear there are more uh, beneficial changes planned for Xstreet as well. Of course, they may not be beneficial for 'everyone' but Second Life is a business I suppose.

They provide us with a wonderful service, and I'm sure they could do better than their purported 70 million USD in profits from last year with which we could see more updates and possibly even money put towards (more) reliable asset/transaction servers.

Sorry to come late to this issue - but I read the first few pages and do I understand correctly, that the forums will be removed and all we will have is the Linden blog? With no way to post threads?

And that XStreet - same thing?

And thus, no way to post one's new products? Or post any threads at all?

Hi, Coco! No, there will be forums, and residents will originate threads. What Blue was proposing was to replace vBulletin forum software with the forum software from the same people who supplied the Blog software. Any one thread would have the same format as the current "discussion" threads that are sometimes linked to blog postings, but threads would be originated by residents of course, and there would be categories and an overall view of all threads. Here's a very dry set of forums based on that same software: http://forums.oracle.com

I sure hope New Products will still be around! Btw, love your freebie this month, the Gardener's Shed.

No idea what really is up with the XStreet forum massacre.

Thanks, Nika! I was worried there for a bit. And thanks for your compliment! And yes, I certainly hope they will continue the New Products and other Classifieds.

I wonder if they are ever going to fix the BBC or whatever it's called code where you can easily post pictures, and bold, highlight, center, etc. things?
