There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps.You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

"sugar-coat the truth" is another common (where I am from) saying. It is possible that this has become "sugar-coat the lily" as an equivalent in some parts, alluding to the symbology of the lily. _____________________

Once things become common use or part of the vernacular, the mistake becomes the norm. So although Shakes might have penned it one way, gild the lily is quite correct as well.
Somehow paint the lily, out of context, isn't nearly as evocative. _____________________

Agreed and where I come from the norm is to "sugar coat" the lily and therefore just as valid I agree Gabriele - and I love regional 'sayings' to begin with. To me they are all valid, if they are what people use. /me imagines this just set Pep's hair on fire. _____________________

Or it can be "an ill-timed or perverse arrival of an event or circumstance that is in itself desirable" (Oxford Dict) I would consider receiving 10,000 spoons fortuitous. But kind of ironic if I really needed a knife. _____________________

The song Ironic by Alanis Morrisette laments having "ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife." The metaphor aptly describes the plethora of metrics that have been foisted upon an unwitting workforce. The late W. Edwards Deming often advised that we reexamine our management information systems for information utility, and discard measurements that are not instrumental in managing and improving a process. When measurement is used as a means to improvement, rather than as an end in itself, the result is fewer measures and more information. The right information leads to sound decisions that improve the quality of organizational processes.
