Paint the lily.

SALISBURY:

To gild refined gold, to paint the lily,
To throw a perfume on the violet,
To smooth the ice, or add another hue
Unto the rainbow, or with taper-light
To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish,
Is wasteful and ridiculous excess...
-- Shakespeare, King John

The Lily is a symbol of Truth and Purity amongst other things. "sugar-coat the truth" is another common (where I am from) saying. It is possible that this has become "sugar-coat the lily" as an equivalent in some parts, alluding to the symbology of the lily.

Once things become common use or part of the vernacular, the mistake becomes the norm. So although Shakes might have penned it one way, gild the lily is quite correct as well.

Somehow paint the lily, out of context, isn't nearly as evocative.

Agreed and where I come from the norm is to "sugar coat" the lily and therefore just as valid :)

I agree Gabriele - and I love regional 'sayings' to begin with. To me they are all valid, if they are what people use.

/me imagines this just set Pep's hair on fire. ;-)

Actually, my entire world - and my income - depends upon using language to emote and to foster reaction. And I make good money doing it.

and countless other references to how well you understand words and their usage...

Thank you Argent! I never knew that and it's a great quote - but it lack the ooomph of "gild the lily" doesnt it? Must refer to the "fleur de lys" on a banner.

yet THAT was your conclusion as to what those lines referred?!?!

methinks you to be overpaid.

Or it can be "an ill-timed or perverse arrival of an event or circumstance that is in itself desirable" (Oxford Dict)

I would consider receiving 10,000 spoons fortuitous. But kind of ironic if I really needed a knife.

one way to look at the "10,000 spoons" line...
08-27-2009 18:40
The song Ironic by Alanis Morrisette laments having "ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife." The metaphor aptly describes the plethora of metrics that have been foisted upon an unwitting workforce. The late W. Edwards Deming often advised that we reexamine our management information systems for information utility, and discard measurements that are not instrumental in managing and improving a process. When measurement is used as a means to improvement, rather than as an end in itself, the result is fewer measures and more information. The right information leads to sound decisions that improve the quality of organizational processes.

Whuhhhz? I just picture her trying to cut up her steak with a truck dumping off the 10,000 spoons in the background.

I see Alannis going over to her cutlery drawer, opening it and finding what seems like 10,000 spoons (because she is prone to exaggeration) and no forks or knives. Where are her forks and knives? Awaiting washing up of course

Methinks I wasn't being asked for a fu#cking thesis.
I was just leaving my place to go pick blueberries.
But when do you wanna "duel" Shakespeare with me, let me know.
And since you haven't a clue about what I specifically do for a living with words and language and song and book and performance and publishing etc, me also thinks you are rather rude, so don't bother.

simply an example of how you leap to conclusions without even bothering with comprehending what's being said. something also represented in how you misinterpreted it to somehow being a challenge to a "duel" of knowledge of Billy boy and his works.
perhaps it was wrong of me imagine that someone whose entire world and income "...depends upon using language to emote and to foster reaction..." really wouldn't miscommunicate and miscomprehend quite so readily.
and steadily.
