Why is there not a "General Discussion" forum?

Seriously,

As is quite evident, "Resident Answers" IS the general discussion forum, Either rename it, or create one. Its PAINFULLY obvious that one is needed.

Is there any hope of something as simple as a new forum being added even remotely possible?

There was one. In LL's infinite wisdom, they took it away. It's not coming back. Soon they will take this forum away, too. And then our only chance to be heard publically will be the first 150 resident fast enough to get comments on the blog.

I hope they fix the hair-up-the-butt problem before that happens. Blog comments are painful enough already..

I seriously hope to God that LL doesn't do away with Resident Answers. I've learned SO MUCH here, whether about basic opinions or basic information. I would be very sad if RA went away.

This forum has been invaluable to me....I have learned a great deal about so many different topics and it's great to have a place to post where you're sure of finding an answer or solution to whatever ails ya!

Because the forum mods/linden are ultra sensitive and don't and won't let anyone say things about them. This is the bottom line. They put Resident Answers instead. Then block or close any threads that say anything they dont like which is usually when the tech team is blasted for its constant shoddy work of sl as well as other things they do or in many cases don't do.
Sl is the only game without General Discussions. We're lucky to have this one as it is.

there are a few posts before and after the one linked to there that may sum up reasons why there is no general discussion forum anymore./327/a0/216229/3.html#post1714560

I too think we need a general discussion forum here. Although fair and constructive criticism of LL or any other organisations involved in running the grid should be allowed, rudeness or gratuitous Linden bashing should not. I looked at other SL discussion forums but they seem to be dominated by a minority of angry, foul-mouthed LL-haters. We don't want that here, just a civilised general discussion forum.

I for one would love to see a 'Constructive' gerneral discussion forum and it seems to me that LL are missing an oportunity to tap into a huge reservoir of informed opinion and bright ideas.

It would be good to hear the current LL thinking on this. It could be that a general discussion forum might be very busy and that they feel that, since LL really concentrate on providing the platform for us, it's up to others to create such a forum.

I would be nice to have the General Discussion forum back.

imo (which isn't so "humble";) LL only took it away because with the "Tao of Linden" no one wanted to do the work needed there. Go figure.

A GD forum needs to be let run free (it is a place to discuss anything) but needs an iron hand for when things violate the rules that are there. Flaming=forum ban. Naming names (for ill-intent)=forum ban. etc etc. (Note: by "forum ban" I mean banned from using the GD forum [yes, with forums you CAN ban specific people from using specific threads, and if LL can't, maybe they should get a real forum provider that can, and that can also re-enable the bbc])

Or short version; LL needs to toss out the "Tao of Linden" and show a litte management.

~Jessy

EDIT: P.S. For the record; the SL Blog just SUCKS for communication. Nice for notices, but NOT for feedback and true communication between LL and the Residents.

Well they're employing someone to work with the forums, not against them. So things may change.

Seems to me that the current setup allows them to censor general topics by stealth. Ie. They say no general chatter is allowed at all, but that's clearly not the case because there are plenty of *very* *obvious* exceptions to the rule. Even Strife himself posted a general topic outside the scope of Resident Answers last week. Oh but on the other hand, we still see threads being locked for being too general.

You just better hope your kind of general chatter is acceptable to the Mao within the Tao.

Having heard horror stories of the General Topics forum, RIP, I thought I'd dig into the forums Archive and sample some of the atrocities first-hand. (First I had to change an Option in the User CP to let me see ancient threads.) But I wasn't very successful in finding the flame-fests I'd expected. It's not that I don't think they're there, it's that I don't know how to hunt for them. So if anybody remembers any good "bad examples," I'd appreciate a pointer or two.

Go to the bottom of the forums to the Archive area. Look for general topics forum. Read it... you'll see pretty well why it was killed. I killed it ;)

Well most of the flames had died down by then.

People had left because the forums were going away.

And simply - the worse excesses of the forums were long gone before they ever decided to get rid of them.

Bingo! It still is, as far as I'm concerned, but it looks like it's the only form of interactive LL communication many of us are gonna get ;)

Let's not lose all hope. I'm sure that LL has regularly discussed closing the forums, but these things have happened too:

-- Strife has mentioned in a response here that if the forums continue to require only light moderation through the end of the year, s/he would recommend restarting the general discussion forum

-- LL agreed to at least look at Strife's recommendations for more resmods. No word on whether any will actually be appointed though.

-- Michael Linden has used the forum to solicit feedback, and received over 400 ontopic responses.

-- Strife has changed hir moderation style to close fewer threads, sometimes making comments instead. Many general discussion threads have been allowed to run, so long as the interaction does not get ugly.

-- Strife posted a great example of an SL-relevant general discussion thread

I would like to see a 'general discussion' section return as well. I haven't got time to follow more than one forum, so haven't gotten into any of the new Second Citizen replacements.

I would give up my own personal freedom to post my opinions (AKA, apply to be a resmod) if I thought it would bring back the general discussion forums!
