ResMod Volunteers Wanted

I am going to give you a bit of a history lesson, with the understanding these are only my opinions.


The forums, when the world was very small, were the only source of information and dialogue within Second Life, in a 'global' sense. People could ask questions, and make suggestions, and they would be read and responded to. Also, and in my opinion more importantly, the forums were a place for the new and growing community to congregate, meet like-minds, socialize, and share thoughs and opinions about all things related to second life.

The resmod system changed that completely, and you're now living in this bubble. See, Linden Lab, ever the cheapskate, came to realize it was labor-intensive to monitor the forums as the population of SL exploded, so they decided to abandon it, and hired (without pay) a group of temporary resmods to police it (I like to think of them as kapos).

The original idea was this would be a constantly rotating group of residents, but hey! constantly rotating is hard (as in work!) so better just to ditch it and leave them to starve off. Those that enjoyed the Stanford Experiment the most stayed, the rest left. This is why the OP mentioned that this was not a thread to discuss current or previous resmods; the OP is trying to delcare that this subject be performed in a vacuum.

I'd earlier posted in russian, this was a debate when resmods started, with the idea of "if a resmod doens't get the topic, is it to be closed?" - the thread was closed.

As more and more resmods quit the unpaid system, those remaining have been overtaxed in judging what's appropriate. Those remaining are askiing fo help, but only in the context of "only people with my worldview need apply', which is kind of sad.

I would argue strongly against [people who] "dont like them or want to use them then they should not be affecting you" and instead offer that those who liked, used and were most affected by them are in the lark due to a poilcy change, and that change is self-propogating through a vetting process that is not transparent.

a) what are you checking in your system of who is recommended by you, and
b) who are you reporting this information to?

What are you trying to get at with this? You post in a language most people here don't understand just to test whether this will get locked? That's just silly. I could post in German or Welsh or Ancient Egyptian and not many people would get it as well, but WHY? just to point fingers and go "*told ya!*???

because something beyond the scope of the knowledge of a resmod should not equal it's closing?

The hell you say!!!! Back when I had color in my hair it was RED. If I was resmod, I wouldn't want resmod powers. Nope, with the pack of jackals around here, I would want a bandolier of grenades and a shotgun!!!!!!

Nope I think I will just keep on doing what I can to help and slowly spread the word to the lindens to please come and look at all of the forums. I sincerely hope that one day this is open to all residents. There is no other place with this wealth of info.

There are people like Sculptie all over here. His own time, and sweat creating a program that he then turned over to the rest of us. There are actually quite a lot of offline build and sculpt tools now. All works of passion created for the benefit of others.

My favorite tool though would have to be LSLEditor by Alphons Jano.

Alphons has spent well over a thousand hours of his own time making a tool that is now unparalleled anywhere for creating lsl scripts. Has an included wiki and now lslint plugin. You can not only create but test groups of scripts that can interact. What is even more remarkable is that at first, instead of encouragement, he recieved negative comments when he set out to create it.

The parts of the forum I know and frequent don't need moderation, we don't fight, flame or argue except over obscure & geeky scripting ideals. We definitely aren't perfect but I can only recall one thread being locked in the last 6 months there and that was because of spam.

So yes, joke around, trash the thread, roast the new moderators if and when we get them. It puts a smile on my face too. But everyone is going to have one hell of a fight on thier hands if they try shutting down this forum. All of the rest of you can join in if you want but this little ol lady don't need much help.

what a shame jesse, that's one more person I'd reccomend but that wouldn't want the job lol... but just think, you could move those posts begging for others work to the product wanted forum heh


other people I'd reccomend, besides Jesse, Chosen Few, Day Oh, heck even Trout Recreant... all of whom are too sensible to take the position, but all vastly helpful, level-headed, and frequently around...

so that leaves me, re-upping my volunteer offer, and hopefully living up to other shining examples

The history lesson is lacking in one thing which your not reading in my posts no longer is this a small business venture it stopped being small long ago and no longer are the days that a linden can be present for everything therefor they delegate like with forum moderation.

So the reason why people can't have LL here like they used to is not that they are cheap (if this was true in the past which i do not believe and i remember the past ..) not any longer if this was ever true its not now. Now the problem is simply that they are too large to be able to do everything and oversee everything. Its what happened when you go from being a little blip to a larger force that other companies now even copy. So they are delegating and in that delegation they set forth rules for the delegates to work by and dont stand over their shoulders and approve every single tiny decision because then there would be no point.

Hence why companies that are larger and growing at rates beyond their ability to hire people for tend to ask for people to volunteer

There are even games out there were every single gm is a volunteer. Yet somehow we all survive in those games they are expected to adhere to a code of conduct or they get their godmode removed. I have payed subscriptions to these games and they worked just fine even though players were not payed but volunteered and screened to be ingame gm's. So its a fact of life and insisting that LL be different then anyone else just cause once upon a time they could be more personal about it well its just not gonna happen and people have to learn to live with it.

I find Airpower works best for quelling angry mobs..the sight of a gunship or two usually keeps people in their place

Hello. I would like to volunteer for a ResMod position if there are any left at this point. I have been in Second Life since November 26th, 2006 so I am definately experienced as far as SL goes. I also used to run a forum for a job agency in Second Life before it shut down. I did all of the administrative work for them. That included moving topics around, granting people access to various parts of the forum, making group roles, etc. I am on Second Life about 8 hours a day, and when I am not on SL I still have access to the internet so I would easily have the time to put forth towards this. Thank you for considering me for this position.

No one knows.

He could mean that they are delaying in it. That they aren't filling them yet. But if they are infact not filling the ResMod job, he should close the thread so he doesn't lead everyone on.

I'm going to have to think about this for a good week before I make a decision on locking this thread.

I find it amusing that LL might hire someone to Mod the forums but they won't accept volunteers.

I wouldn't have been picked anyways so i'm not too bummed about it. But I can't believe they are assigning lindens to the position when it's called "Residential Moderator". So much for all the excited volunteers.
