random freezes with the latest windlight-cool
12-28-2007 14:52
hi, i'm getting random freezes with the latest coolrelease of windlight... totally freezing my box, can't even ssh in from outside to reboot cleanly. good that i have all filesystems journalled..
any idea what is causing that? opensuse 10.2, nvidia geforce 8400GS, latest driver rpms from the nvidia install source (169.07) nothing in any logfile that looks suspicious... |

Heya,
Am running the 1.18.5.3 v7 release at the moment and it seems rock solid. Just one potential weirdness worth mentioning. If I drag something from inventory to rez in my pad (full perms as you'd expect), I get a lot of "Failed to rez at that location" messages. If I zoom in on the prim I'm trying to get something to rez on I can usually get it to appear, but it's odd. Worth noting that it's a well behaved oddity. I've not lost any items from it, they all stay firmly in my inventory until they do rez. Could this be a by-product of one of the patches? (I've not turned on the restrained life part). |

Have a dig around the jira and see if you can find anything helpful. Try searching for nvidia or something. http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2899 perhaps? Or read through /111/3b/219954/1.html and see if that helps any? |

Yes, I noticed this problem too: you have to change the camera angle in order to get the rezzing to work again. I tracked it down to Gig's camera zooming patch. Till this patch is fixed, I remove it from the Cool SL Viewer. I just uploaded the Cool SL Viewer v1.18.5.3 release 8 ( http://sldev.free.fr/ ). Happy New Year ! |

Problems with Windlight
01-05-2008 08:05
I don't know if this is just me, but as soon as I apply SecondLife_i686_1_18_6_76116_Windlight_CoolRelease_1-diff_files.tar.bz2 to the latest release of Linux Windlight, SecondLife_i686_1_18_6_76453_WINDLIGHT -- the one released on Dec 29 to fix the security problem that affected German users -- SL tells me that I'm not using the latest (and mandatory, because of the security fix) version of Windlight and won't log me in.
Is there a work-round anyone knows to make SL will recognise that I'm using CoolSL version of the latest release rather than an older version, or am I doing something wrong? |

Is there a work-round anyone knows to make SL will recognise that I'm using CoolSL version of the latest release rather than an older version, or am I doing something wrong? This is normal as the version is hard-coded in the binary file which is part of the SecondLife_i686_1_18_6_76116_Windlight_CoolRelease_1-diff_files.tar.bz2 archive. I will rebuild a new WL version of the Cool SL Viewer as soon as the sources for the latest official release will be published. As usual, LL is painfully slow (and very lazy) at publishing the sources... ![]() |

Thanks ever so for the swift reply, Henri. And thank you, too, for all the hard work you put in on the Cool SL viewer, which really makes the game so much more enjoyable.

Arising from my question about Windlight and your reply, Henri, is it possible to apply individual patches to the latest linux Windlight viewer, and, if so, how do I do it? Forgive me, but I am a complete newbie in such matters.
I am particularly interested in applying slviewer-v11843-PanelOverlayHidableButtons.patch and slviewer-v11851-PanelOverlayHidableButtons.patch to get rid of the Release Keys and Master Volume Control. I've untarred them in the same folder as Windlight, but they don't seem to do anything.. am I doing something wrong? |

personally i tested it, and it lags for me when it shouldn't...
I remember that a very old viewer of SL was lagging like this before... dunno if it's linked but since Cool Sl viewer is the only available linux viewer for those who doesn't want recompile sources.... ![]() _____________________

Henri, have you noticed any demand for a UI patch to allow chat/script/notecard/etc windows to be separated from the main viewer window, as proposed in VWR-2708? A change like that would probably require a lot of work to add non-opengl rendering for the child windows, but I also believe it would be a huge improvement to the viewer's interface (especially for people with multiple monitors or slower video cards).

I remember that a very old viewer of SL was lagging like this before... dunno if it's linked but since Cool Sl viewer is the only available linux viewer for those who doesn't want recompile sources.... ![]() What exactly do you mean by "it lags" ?... It is faster than the official viewer (no wonder, given that it is compiled with gcc 4.1 and with better optimization options). The Windlight version of the Cool SL Viewer was even reported as 50% faster by one of its users (they have a dual core CPU, which might explain why I don't notice such a huge speed improvement on my own system). Question: did you install libdku from the official package into the Cool SL Viewer install, like instructed on the website ?... If not, then everything is drawn with libopenjpeg and it indeed crawls... Henri. |

Too much work for me (I'm a very busy man already)... Sorry. Henri. Well, I don't blame you - that type of UI redesign is probably best left to the Lindens who are currently working on Dazzle (which is pretty, but doesn't add any new functionality that I've seen). It seems that a lot of other people are keen on this feature, so I'm confident that it'll happen someday =) |

The Cool SL Viewer v1.19.0.1RC is available (http://sldev.free.fr/), and yes, this version reverts all the ugly changes LL did to the UI (or: how to revert in one day of work what Lindens took 2 months to ruin...):
- The overlay bar is back to v1.18.5.3 aspect (with a smarter way to deal with the Master Remote button/panel: it is only displayed if a media is playing or voice is enabled). - The chatbar is back to its original aspect (no more stupid and enormous volume controls eating it up) and even better with fixed width History/Say and Shout buttons (makes more room for the chat input line on larger screens and prevents the buttons to become too small in small windows). - The toolbar is back to its original self (no cryptic icons or pull down gadgets: only the plain text buttons, easy to read and use). - The status bar icons are back to their old self (the new icons are too dim to see properly and look too similar to distinguish easily: does LL have a single clue of what accessibility means ?... Answer: no). Of course, the voice status _does_ work, even when voice is disabled, contrarily to LL's viewer. - The ugly and redundant search input box is gone and the bandwidth and packet loss indicators are back. - The friends list, groups list, chat history are all back to their old self (1.18.0.6 alike, but with voice support where applicable). - The mini-map icons can optionally be set back to their old T aspect (as the new icons are too small to distinguish from each other, particularly on large screens where pixels are very small). The above is only about the UI changes... There is of course much more to the Cool SL Viewer (and particularly a better stability). The Windlight v1.19 version is due soon (as soon as I will have figured out what sources to use as LL stopped publishing them on the Wiki, apparently...). Enjoy ! |
