A year later, it was obvious that no other east coast location was even given the slightest consideration, and I'd even say that the location is picked not in consideration of the entire SL community (otherwise a central-US location would make sense overall), but instead was chosen at whim by a select set of individuals. I wish I had your omnipresence to be able to state its "obvious." Where's your proof that we obviously didn't consider any east coast location? That would certainly seem fly in the face of the fact that last year's SLCC organizers consist of 1 person in NYC, 1 person in NJ, 2 in Philadelphia, and 1 in the Maryland / DC area. You're grasping at straws here, and have no right to declare this a "whim", when it was clearly a decision made with reasons that everyone else can seem to see. Oh well, as I've said: you can't please everyone all the time. ![]() Regards, -Flip _____________________

Just out of curiousity, Flipper, why not pick a couple of major cities - say San Francisco, Las Vegas, Dallas, Chicago, Miami and NYC, and put it up for a community vote? As Newfie say, it would definitely feel like more of a community event if it actively reflected what the community wants. SF is not a bad choice - but it would seem something more centrally located would be better, like Chicago or Dallas, just out of fairness to everyone involved. This was discussed, but how would you propose doing a vote? The forums is an extreme subset of the community. There's no way in world to reach a sizable demographic to be able to take a reasonable vote. If someone wants to do a convention in another city - go ahead! The fact is the organization team is going to be spending the most time working on the convention, and are the only people who are guaranteed to be in attendence. When sites were suggested last year, the bias was that everyone chose their back yard. San Francisco is the obvious location: Linden Lab is there. There are more SL residents from the bay area than any other area. Regards, -Flip _____________________

I'm not a huge fan of Vegas as a vacation destination since we have two small kids Vegas is Fine for kids nowadays, I took my two little boys a few years ago and they had a blast. Admittedly it is more um, adult, than say ... well any place where there arent a million slot machines around every corner. |

oh.. and Cali is all no indoor smoking, isn't it? of course, their weather is probably going to be just a bit better than the ice cold rainy night we experienced in NYC, yes? Yes, no smoking indoors. Its a pain, but as a smoker I voted for it ![]() *looks out her window* I dont know, its raining as i type this! Dont fall for the "sunny CA" crud. SF can be cloudy and foggy. But it can be gorgeous and sunny as well. It all depends on what part of SF and what time of year. I hope everyone has a blast at the convention. I *am* confused at the hullabaloo over the location. I wouldnt be upset about it being across the country just because I personally couldnt go. It seems fair to me to have it one year east coast, one year west. Maybe next year it will be somewhere in the middle. |

Admittedly it is more um, adult, than say ... well any place where there arent a million slot machines around every corner. I'm sure that SF makes really good sense for this conference this year, for many reasons, and there will always be people unhappy with whatever location is chosen. My reasons for hoping for another location this year are, as you can see, mainly selfish, so pay no great heed to my personal whinging. ![]() (Anybody up for a Pacific Northwest SL Con in the near future? There are more SL residents from the bay area than any other area. Regards, -Flip I don't think San Francisco is the obvious location just because Linden Lab is there. If that were the case, why did you have the first one in NYC? I would probably say that a huge amount of the people who attended your event last year particpate in the forums, given the sheer number of threads about the topic, so it doesn't make much sense to say "we couldn't use the forums". At least some semblance of trying to make it convenient not just for those living in the Bay Area, but to make it accessible to the largest amount of people in the US and Canada (while you may have more residents from the bay area, I would say that combined, there are more not from the bay area, than there are that are), it should be somewhere more centrally located like Chicago. Even if a vote didn't decide it, it would have at least given you an idea of what people overall wanted, instead of your group just unilaterally deciding for everyone. You don't seem to value much input on this, but it is a valid criticism. _____________________

There are more residents in the bay area than anywhere else. As a city to visit, its quite affordable. There are plenty of things to do, and its typically quite nice at that time of year. Last year, NYC was chosen so we could do it in conjunction with the State of Play conference, and because NYC has the second most SL residents to the bay area. To me, this all seems quite logical? Last year was the east coast, this year is the west coast, perhaps next year will be central. If people want more input into how its run, then feel free to attend our next public meeting, which I will announce here! That said, Cris, I hope you can make it this year! The first round is on me. ![]() Regards, -Flip _____________________

I'm in KC Missouri so of course I would be better in a central location, however I have never been to San Fran, so it should be fun, this one I want to come to since I missed last one. However our Florida vacation is in October the date isnt bound yet, so the sooner I know a date on this the sooner I can make a date and set up our Florida vacation.
Hope to hear soon Hugzz to all Fel ![]() _____________________

Wow, looks like alot of residents I've met IW are going to be able to make it. This is really exciting. I'm so glad that its going to be in SF... if it was in any other state (except Nevada) I wouldn't be able to make it.
I have to agree with flip on the part that even if there was a community vote and the location was based on the majority, there will still be those that will not be happy with the location or find something else to be upset about it. MJ ![]() |

I hope you guys have fun. This year I actually will have enough money to travel, but I'm going to visit my girl in Argentina, where she will be working at one of our largest wine companies (SOGRAPE) or rather its subsidiary (Finca Flichman). She's going to implement their new factory's ISO 9001 quality control system... lots of responsibility. There's a 33% chance she might be invited to stay there, so maybe for the next SLCC I will be living a little closer to the states

I understand the reasoning behind San Francisco, I just think something that is for the SL community should take more of the community itself into consideraiton. Good luck with the event regardless. _____________________

There are more residents in the bay area than anywhere else. Do you have the credit card billing address for every SL resident neatly in a database with zipcodes cross referenced with the US Postal Service and Google Earth? How in the hell did you gather this information? |
