I put forth Vegas as a suggestion last year :P

Put it forward again this year too.

I'd attend in a heartbeat if it was in Vegas. I'd be that blur of a Cousin It ... with a shot glass in hand. :D

Now I'm curious as to where you would have suggested SLCC be held? :)

MJ

Well those are easy ones, as I've suggested spots before...
For the east coast, Philadelphia or even Atlantic City.
Suggestions for central(ish): Like others suggested, Austin Texas, Vegas...I'd even say Cincinatti/etc.

In short, there's plenty of spots large and small that all make for interesting locations. SF may be a nice one, but it's well covered and has been done a dozen times over. NYC was done also.

No matter how it's diced, SF is clearly at the bottom of the list as a decision. I am incredibly disappointed at the short-sighted nature of the location for this year. The SL community would have been far better served in a different location.

As long as there is a bar nearby serving Stella Artois, I will probably show up.

Let me know the dates, k?

Crazy Awesome.

I'd basically be going up there by myself.

You might be travelling here by yourself, but you won't be here alone, by any means.

Count me in!

I have a hunch that given the rate SL is growing at, pretty soon there may be several locations per year. When we did the last convention, we were at about 40,000; now we're at 120,000, and probably close to 250,000 by the time the con happens. We can't always please everyone with the locations chosen, but if someone is up for doing an east coast one this year, I'm pretty sure I'd be happy to attend one I'm not involved in running so I can point and laugh instead of vice versa! ;-)

Regards,

-Flip

Just out of curiousity, Flipper, why not pick a couple of major cities - say San Francisco, Las Vegas, Dallas, Chicago, Miami and NYC, and put it up for a community vote? As Newfie say, it would definitely feel like more of a community event if it actively reflected what the community wants. SF is not a bad choice - but it would seem something more centrally located would be better, like Chicago or Dallas, just out of fairness to everyone involved.

Yay! A second chance for me to attend! I hope I don't fail this time. Anywhere on the West Coast (or Vegas) is good by me. :)

Only reason I bring up Vegas is because it's pretty much a 'convention' city - every major hotel is able to cater to conventions - space, food, accomodation.. and of course lots of 'after hours' entertainment (and not just gambling and strippers - theres the Cirque de So Lame and Blue Gits shows as well - not to mention Wayne Newton).

Anyone organizing something of size would do well to at least surf the web and check out the prices etc. that are offered.

I think this is an excellent suggestion. If it's a community convention, why not a community vote on where it's held?

I'm not a huge fan of Vegas as a vacation destination since we have two small kids, but it would be perfect for a con like this. Airfare to Vegas can be had for relatively inexpensive prices from all over the country.

I might attend a con in San Francisco, but then again, I might not. If I went to SF, I'd have to drag the whole fam-damily along since that area is on our general "must vacation here someday" list, and that would seriously hamper my ability to enjoy myself at a SL con. If it were in Vegas, though, I could convince my hubby that I need a long weekend to myself out of town. :D

I think there were a few worthy cities. I could have seen this in Philly or DC or Austin as well. I was torn at first, but what swayed me, personally, to agree San Fran is the best bet is this:

In 20 or so months, when SLCC 07 takes place, Linden Lab will likely have reached a point where the servers are licensed out, and may be drifting away from the center of the Metaverse as they currently hold. In that line of thought, getting it in San Fran this year may be the most appropriate.

I think it could be very cool also to incorporate tours of Linden Lab with the whole convention idea, and the idea of mingling with more Lindens is always cool. From a financial perspective, it also may mean that Linden Lab will be likely to donate more money to the convention because they won't have to pay for airfare and hotels for their staff.

I think I'd rather this be sometime during mid-August, rather than late August, early fall. I'm fine with San Francisco, New York, Boston, Austin, Atlanta, or Miami. For me, New York is easiest, since it's just a short train ride into the city. San Francisco seems appropriate, though, since that's where LL is based. I wouldn't go to Vegas or LA.

The Second Life Community Convention (SLCC) organization team is proud to announce that the second annual 2006 convention will be held in San Francisco! The first convention was a huge success and was held on the east coast, in New York city, so this time, we're going to hit the west coast!

Why San Francisco?

While owning property in San Francisco is very expensive, the cost of hotels, restaurants and drinks isn't nearly as high as you would find in many cities, like Boston or New York City. Its a beautiful city with a lot of history, great museums, and culture. Linden Lab is also located in San Francisco, and there are more residents from the bay area than any other major metropolitan location, allowing for maximum SL citizen participation. Most of the SLCC organizers are from the far east coast of the United States, so this decision is not made lightly!

When will it be held?

We haven't nailed down specific dates yet, but we're thinking very late summer or early fall. We're currently looking at available spaces.

How many people attended last year? How many are you expecting this year?

Last year, we had 160 people register and attend; plus, press, NYLS guests, and so forth. Since then, the population of Second Life has more than tripled in under FOUR MONTHS. We're doing some research now into how many people we can expect give the current population size and rate of growth. It is becoming increasingly clear that regional conventions will be needed in the near future!

What will it be like this year? Same as last year?

While just about everyone we received feedback from who attended last year's convention agreed it was a great time, we've also listened to constructive criticism. Most comments revolved around the convention feeling somewhat rushed, the desire to hear from more resident panels, and the opportunity to spend more social time with residents. We've taken all of this into account and are going to try to create an agenda with more choice, as well as let the community come up with ideas for panels and speakers which can then be voted on. More on this to come.

We hope to see you at this year's SLCC 2006; many more details to come as information is available!

Warmest regards,

-Flip, on behalf of the SLCC team

I'm never going to be able to make it to one of these shindigs.

While I'm perfectly happy with SF because its a neat town, and I'd love a good excuse to visit again...

From the perspective of creating the easiest travel for the majority of North American Second Lifers, Chicago or St. Louis would really be the best choice.

Both of those are major cities with plenty of things to do: Chicago is central if you're including our Canadian friends - and St. Louis being central between East and West. Maybe the Third incarnation of this shindig will take this into account.

Regardless - I look forward to seeing everyone in San Francisco! :)

*shrug*

Not possible for me, I can't travel that far away yet due to work (though I'm hoping to get that fixed in time for a July visit to Spokanne and Mysterium '06).

I still intend to run a discussion event and informal meet/greet at the Dexcon 9 games convention. East Brunswick, NJ.

http://www.dexposure.com/dexcon9.html

I'll post in the appropriate forum once I've got things finalized. Note the discussion event(s) I intend to run are not just on SL...

Alan, that looks pretty cool.. i'm sure i'll end up showing up. providing that i remember the dates, but i keep an eye on the gatherings forum, so there's a good chance i'll make it for at least a day or two, if there's an official unofficial SL date, i'll aim for that one.

-

and to the SLCC 2006 group.. need badges? heheh.. and how will it be handled this year? will it most likely be the same printing process? same size? and if i can *raise my hand* to do this again, should i shy away from using avatar pics in them this time and just go with a generalized design that uses only one variable (an avatars name)?

or maybe i should just find the in-world group (i'm assuming there is one) and apply to join that and go from there?

on a geographical note, San Fran is going to be really hard for me to manage to attend, but you can be sure i'll try my best! i agree with both sides on this one. yes, it would be more community driven to put the location up to a vote, but then again.. only partially, since the community is only slightly represented in these forums, but still.. it would lend an air of overall inclusion of SLers. however, it makes perfect sense to hold it in San Fran.. especially in light of how big the community will be come SLCC time next year.. i can completely see regional conventions becoming a necessity. i have a feeling that we'll be well over 500,000 active accounts by that time! maybe next year we could do Vegas AND Chicago? (of course, i would personally prefer Atlantic City.. but living in Nj kind of makes me biased on that point. :D)

Beau, you make an EXTREMELY valid point!! it would be kind of cool to be able to move one foot away without having to say "excuse me" to ten different people.. heheh.

it was great times, but.. crowded.

oh.. and Cali is all no indoor smoking, isn't it? of course, their weather is probably going to be just a bit better than the ice cold rainy night we experienced in NYC, yes?
