In world quests, that span from one zone to another, weather it be collect random items or some kinda of treasure adventure! ...Now some of you may think i got this from There.com but there used to be a informal treasure hunt in darklife for as long as i can remember.

Some other thing's i'd like to see are game elements adapted into sl more, like a better battling system, or some more tools we could use to script with animations and wep skill types that we can add into a hot bar to have react on a timer.

Next interesting thing i'd like to see are more adventure games. SL is notorious for having those people with hidden tallents that stay all well too hidden till after its too late, i would love to see something more then just numbkilla and the URU zone, and maybe have some games branch out and work together to promote other games. Pirate Cotton promotes alot of games made in second life from a bulletin outside the tavern in darklife. But wouldnt it be cool if there was some secret item that had to deal with another game that also contributed to darklife? Like a holy sword that was on display for a clue or maybe a treasure not found anywhere else?

Last but not least games i'd love to see transitioned: Harvest Moon, Katamari Domaci, Star Wars BattleFront 1+2, Half-life 2, and Vampire: The Masquerade Redemption/Vampire Bloodlines.

Each game has potential in new and old style. Harvest Moon is a growing game of making plants. I remember Grim making this for a game called Simcast, but it failed in the end sadly because of bug issues that were consistant. Katamari Domaci would be fun because it would mean an entire sim thats physical<hasnt been one since beta!!> SWBF would be cool because of the use of guns/character classes/fighting system that would constantly evolve and change which Yuri has with the clones right now in SL. Half-Life 2 is a MAJOR contribution to how its physics engine reacts to players and their actions in game. You have no idea how much fun I had using the grav gun....that was more fun then any other armed weapon to me. I'd love to see the day where we can get that much control and watch how things go ka-booey! They always had one of the best AI for bots or monsters....I've seen headcrabs made in second life.....yea there not very preatty. Lastly the Vampire games are steeped into the RPG tradition that i would love to see in a sim or two of covering your humanity that i think some of the vampire groups would be nice if they used more often! Bloodlines element of suspense made throughout the entire game would be nice to have here in sl.

How about a multiplayer Thief? Few years ago, some folks created MP:Thief with the Unreal Tournament engine, where one side played thieves, the other side played guards. You know, like Counterstrike meets medieval cat burglary. Trouble was, it never really took off as a mod, probably because shooter fans aren't used to the slow paced, stealth action of Thief. But here could be a case where the relatively low frame rate of SL would work well, in a first-person game. Add some good sound propogation, and a light detection system which allows the thief in darkness to disappear, and there ya go.

This a cool concept Hamlet, but why not just adjust this to rest of SL? make light and dark detection appart of the world? hehe also unless you sponsor people to keep a game like this going, its going to utterly fail in the end. Just like anything in sl, we need to keep it updated/mild community involvment/reason to get involved and play. I wouldnt mind that idea, but what if i wanna do something like this just around someone's house! :D I would love seeing the light/dark detection system just be a regular thing in sl instead of for JUST a game!

Have ya talked to AngryBeth Shortbread?

Because of how I came to SL, I'm still hoping for more cyberpunk, Deus Ex-like things here. Those are my digital roots. :)

I would really love to play something similar to Bingo in SL. I think a lot of SecondLifers would enjoy something like this. Just an idea.

Me too!!! I've started to design a few in my head but my ideas quickly grow to a massive scale whenever cyberpunk is involved. Maybe I should just design for like a Cowboy genre and then switch it up to cyberpunk on myself at the last minute :P

... avatar-based Jagged Alliance.

Not sure if anyone remembers the game, but it's a turn-based, squad-based action strategy classic. What was great about it (one of the great things) was its variety of gameplay-- it wasn't just guys shooting at each other, but you could plan and execute complex actions between your team: one guy opens a door while another hands a grenade to another guy who runs through the door and tosses it in, for example It occured to me that we probably have enough custom poses to imitate all the actions you'd need to do this in SL, and because it's turn-based, you get around the frame rate/streaming problem. So instead of moving little characters around the game map, you move *yourself* around, working and communicating with other Residents on your team, while the opposing team of Residents does the same thing.

Not sure the demo will run on today's PCs (it came out in '98), but it may inspire some ideas:

http://www.download.com/Jagged-Alliance-2-demo/3000-7562_4-895134.html

And yes, if someone creates a viable variation in SL, I'll almost certain blog it. ;)

Anyone into Settlers of Catan?
10-12-2005 12:53
Hi everyone, I'm a (relative) newbie trying to figure out a project to do in SL to get me into doing something more than wandering around and buying stuff. I was thinking of creating a Settlers of Catan style of game that would be less board game, and more role-playing. Any other Catan players out there interested?

And on a bigger note, do I have to worry about copyright problems or things like that? I don't want to make money off of it, I just think it would be fun!!

Sprite Quartermass collaborated with a Lex Neva to create Settlers of SL.

Heres a pic of Philip Linden playing.

Search "Settlers" in Snapzilla for more pics!

ah, yes, do you you know if it is still available for play? I was actually thinking of pulling it off the board and into a life size sort of thing, since SL is where it is possible!

Thanks for the quick reply though

I think so... this Snapzilla pic shows it at YadNi's Junkyard... I'd try there first.

That's a cool idea. Always room for more games here :)

RoboRally?
10-12-2005 21:18
Anyone ever play RoboRally? Designed by Richard Garfield (of Wizards of the Coast), it was just recently revamped and reissued by Avalon Hill.

I've got a few ideas to bring this to SL, but being an utter newbie, I need to learn how to build anything first.

Just wondering if something like this is already in the works.

One of my ideas was a life-sized relay race based on the RoboRally concept where players get into chariot-like pods and program them like you would in the game and race through life-sized obstacle courses to collect the flags.

If anyone is interested, drop me an IM. I think it'd be really cool.

I'll help beta-test.

I would also submit for consideration an optional scavenger hunt conducted on the pods, near or amongst the obstacle course.

As far as text adventures go, I'm all for that! Make sure we can leave one going forever, at our home. Imagine walking into someone else's home and reading

|Deck Nine
|This is a featureless corridor similar to every other corridor on
|the ship. It curves away| to starboard, and a gangway leads up.
|To port is the entrance to one of the ship's primary |escape pods.
|The pod bulkhead is closed.

I think this could be done fairly easily here; roleplaying it wouldn't require much 'suspension of belief'. *grin grin*
Make the outfits, have chummy missions to accomplish, etc. Those not familiar with it can just google Paranoia RPG - should do the job. Product of West End Games.

PARANOIA IS FUN. OTHER GAMES ARE NOT FUN. PLAY PARANOIA.

One game I'd like to see translated to SL is.. kinda ambiguous and vage. Way back when I had my old P133 system, I used to play an online game called Shattered Empires. It was a neat concept, you created your country, got onuses / penalties depending on which government system you used. You started off with a main city and two settlements. It was turn based and you recieved a turn every hour, by which you could allocate money to Social, Health, Education, Military, Research / Technology. It's an interesting concept I'd like to see ported into SL, perhaps made into a board game of sorts? Seeing as it'd be turn based I was thinking that it'd be a permanent edifice on the SL landscape.

Just tossing the idea about. :P

Computer games, video games, board games, card games, whatever. Which ones would you love to see make their way into SL, in some new incarnation?

This is not fair Hamlet! Hello my name is MarkTwain White and it has been 186 months since I last played DIPLOMACY.

At the time of my "intervention" from loved ones I was running eight Diplomacy games on CompuServe and publishing the first play-by-electronic-mail newsleter, the ARMCHAIR DIPLOMAT.

DIPLOMACY is a game for men with balls, and women for that matter. DO NOT let this game into SL. It will make all the "drama" here seem like pre-school. Diplomacy is NOT a nice game. Back in my halcyon days of DIPLOMACY "pc" meant personal computer, not some media spawned reference to political correctness. Who need that kind of PC? Not Diplomacy players!

Oh, by the way, if you will support my attack on Bulgaria I will gladly convoy your army to Tunis. Trust me!

As backwards as this may sound. I'd love to play text adventures in SL.

For those of you familiar with those, I don't mean doing Zork in prims and scripts (though please please please do that someone!)

I mean a single prim that would listen to a single person's input and respond game text back to them. That way others could "watch" and make suggestions.

Since text adventures, particular those programmed in "Inform", can run in PHP and.. well frankly any language, I'm hoping it would be possible to make a link between SL and existing on-line text games.

Here is how I would envision such game using Zork as an example. *note the game would be rather "spammy" but intentionally so.

--------------------------

Wow..I would love to be involved in a project like this, as one of the builders.
