Prok is right. SL is a dog's breakfast. Why do people argue with this?

I talk to strangers all the time, this has NEVER happened to me. Even though I buy and sell land. I've been in SL for weeks and I haven't met anyone unfriendly yet! (I did get griefed once.)

Well, Buster, I hope this isn't the usual effort to demean me by diminishing the reality of my experience, describing me as a crank who only gets nasty responses because I *am* nasty, I'm sure you wouldn't want to be doing anything personal like that, not with Pathfinder and his black hat and galoshes stomping all over this forum!

So let me try to explain why I have my point of view, which is legitimate, normal, and my experience, and you have your point of view, which is legitimate, normal, and based on yuor experience.

The reason is that when I buy land, most of the time, I don't sell it. It's easy to buy land, put a price on it, sell it. Most people just buy it and never talk to you. A few might IM you to try to get the price down, so they are nice to you (unless they're from that school of thought that says rag on a piece of land and its seller and insult them into lowering the price.)

You sell land, and you get money, and that's nice, and the transaction is brief and pleasant. You never have to think again about Gentlemen's Club, do you Buster? Hmmm....can I make you just a *teensy bit* guilty about GC Perfect 10 hmmm Buster lol? Because you sold to him, and got his money, and remained on good terms with him, but....I'm still next door to him. I've never talked to him, following my policy of waiting at least 30 days before you deal with a club problem because they usually just go away.

But...I will have to talk to him at some point if he doesn't move his odd laggy club situated amidst all these residences and stores (not malls) which want a nice residential experience. Of course we *all know* that it is his right to do WTF he wants on his land, but...

I just don't know how many neighbour-type situations you are really in where you really have to hunker down and think -- now how is this sim gonna go? I think I'm your neighbour or was in one other sim, and probably it is still in such chaos that there's no point in trying to decide all those things yet. But...explain to me your per-sim neighbour ratio experience and I can understand better what you are talking about.

Hard as it is to believe most of my game interactions with people are pleasant and productive. They give me money, I find them land and a houes or sell them land, I teach them game stuff, they give me insights into what they want, and help me understand the market better, they talk about stuff in general, I talk about stuff in general. Really, that's what it is most of the time. But there is that hard core of weird-ass troublesome too-tightly-wrapped bunch of people in the game that make at least once incident per day, or one ugly griefing build surprise a day, I find.

Not bad. Now if only we could get that installed in Prokofy

Har har har. I guess Pathfinder is laughing too hard over that one himself to call "offsides, Zigzag, offsides!"

Now, why am I not surprised that a socialist is thinking up a way to censor me automatically with some device?

Certainly not! I have not, nor will I ever describe anyone as a "crank".

Far from it, I have met you in-world on several occasions. Your'e actually included in the "everybody I've met".

I think it is true in life that one sees what one looks for.

It reminds me when I did a post doc, I wrote software which could take instrumental music and summarize it into its most representative piece.

I did this by comparing sequences of amplitudes and the sequence which was most similar to the rest of piece (ie, the sequence most used over and over again) was the sample I provided.
Get out! I didn't know you were so fascinating. :D

Are you a musician, a coder, or both by trade? I'm going to guess both. :)

Try flying anywhere in SL and you'll see what we all see - It's a mish mash of amateur user content.

I'm confused. What exactly is it that you want, those of you who get so bent outta shape over builds and other peoples' land? Are you picturing some kind of individual Utopia where every build, every tree, every piece of furniture, is made to your specifications and within the boundaries of your own personal imaginations?

Heck yes there's some ugly things out there. I once even bought a 512 next to my lot for a ridiculous 8K, just to get rid of a giant electric blue "Phish Tank" blocking my hillside view. But why make a federal case out of it?

The most amusing thing about this is that the argument will never end. More dreaded newbies are rolling in (myself included, woot!) and falling in love with this game and world--there's no getting rid of 'em. It's a place with a hugely diversified population and that's not going to change. To the "rest of us", those of you who spend chunks of time arguing about the SL builds you don't approve of just come across as arrogant, annoying and selfish. If you really want a little universe all to your own liking and acceptance, it's probably best to find a little offline game in which you can create without the hassles of other people's attempts at imagination. :) Find one?? Heck...you professionals out there can probably even make your own! Or perhaps an online version in which a very detailed application would need to first be filled out and approved before any newbie would be allowed to join in...including a thick portfolio of architectural accomplishments as proof. :) Just a thought.

Yes, that's right, that's currently what we have now, and the game is ruled by those who place architectural accomplishment uber alles. They think that is the game, they think THEY are the game, and they think that others who can't build at that level should either just buy their buildings and shut up, or come and shop or live in their buildings and ooh and awe.

But the game is so much more than that.

And anything I ever say about buildings creating a problem is never about putting a chill on the kind of creativity you mention. Let a thousand 512s blooms with whatever people imagine. Let people then move out of that chaos to larger areas where it sorts out. Let them have some options.

You moved away from a phish tank. Well, multiple that by a zillion, and you find the game's engine -- people moving away from what they find ugly.

I see this all the time with rentals. Someone tells me passionately that they "had to move from ugly" but then they put up something that doesn't seem so different, and what they moved from doesn't seem to ugly but little things, tiny things, can get to you when you want this game to be a place to escape from real life.

Try to make it so that your escape from RL doesn't create a nightmare for others doing the same thing as you.
