I have seen several professional women post their jobs and ask what category you would put them in and you say retail/service/low wage bullshit but they have management positions. You obviously don't know what a pain in the ass it is to manage other people who have their own thoughts and ideas on how things should be done. I am also a FEMALE PROFESSIONAL and refuse to be put into a box labeled reatil/low wage/whatthehellever. Retail would be more like 7-11 or Walmart not a marketing manager unless they are selling door-to-door toilet brushes. The business world is being inundated with women professionals. You go girls! Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary: Professional Function: adjective a : of, relating to, or characteristic of a profession b : engaged in one of the learned professions c (1) : characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession professions was linked to: Profession Function: noun a : a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation b : a principal calling, vocation, or employment c : the whole body of persons engaged in a calling I am the Owner/CEO of a computer forensics consulting firm. I guess that puts me under retail/low wage/services . . . oh wait . . . Computer Forensics is a TECHIE job isn't it? LOL! Goddamnedit! I plead the 5th . . . is it too late for that?

From: someone So I'm guessing prok is a housewife of some sort*, given the prolific and voluminous nature of his/her posts. Nobody slacks that much, posts, and still gets paid. Well, not in currency anyway.
What do *you* do, Prok? Or does the poll not include your particular pastime.
*(Given the SL population, many are, but prok is the special kind that doesn't really do much, apparently.) Hi, Maxx, sorry to disappoint. I'm not a housewife. I work more than full-time. I do get paid. I do make time to post because it's important. Do you need my resume and list of publications? I dunno. Ask Nolan or something?

I own my own jewelry design and production company which gives me whatever time I want to mess with SL - or whatever time I can otherwise squeeze out of a 7 day week turning the wheels of progress. Does that make me artsy (my partner and I design a lot of what we make) - or management? (I do all the book work, shipping and office stuff) or low paid wage slave turning out other company's contract work? or stay-at-home because the company is based on our property and we also live on the property? Hmmm..... I just love those shades of grey.......

From: someone Prok whines and exaggertates about posting RL info, but starts a thread asking for it to be divulged. About par for the hyprocritical course. I did not whine and exaggerate, I told the truth, and I started a thread about the danger of such stalkers and harassers to the whole climate and community, and what I posted about was and is taken seriously, is the subject of investigation, and was the subject of a crystal-clear interpretation from the Lindens. Your recurring need to question, undermine, spin, one-up and generally piss on that opens up the issue of your *participation in* that TOS violation. Please stop it. Next, I did not ask for anyone to divulge their RL information. I said 3 times that it is an ANONYMOUS poll, where the option was clicked off ANONYMOUS precisely to avoid people having to show and tell. And if anyone has showed and told here, it's because they are resume-polishers or open about such things and they don't mind. So any hint that I"ve "asked for it to be divulged" is tendentious and a lie, in fact LOL. Um...am I the first one to do this or something? Has anyone ever tried to get this self-referential, precotious and spoiled community to ever examine itself in any kind of systematic and general way? If they have, excuse me. I just never saw it. I thought it would be interesting just to get a straw poll -- it is never anything more than that -- on the RL professions of all the people constantly reading and posting to this only-10-percent-of-subscribers. So far, we can tell that the majority are IT/computer people, and a distinct second group is artist/entertainment. So we've already determined just why it is they are in the 10 percent of the population LOL. And we may find that the 90 percent not reading or posting aren't in those categories? Or they are? We'd have to check, eh?

I plead the 5th . . . is it too late for that? Like I keep saying, your criticism of this poll and its very quick categories is your blueprint for MAKING YOUR OWN BETTER POLL. Who could complain? I'm sure you'll have no trouble getting people to re-vote to clarify that there's really a big difference between management and employee in an area like retail/services/financial. I've often been in management positions myself in my work. So I respect management. If I put low/wage/part-time/retail/services into one category, it is not some kind of prejudice or judgement of that category. It's merely an effort to make another category big enough to fit non-computer. If you found something judgemental in that, it could be that you, yourself, do not respect often vital low-wage work, and you, yourself, do not respect often vital part-time work which is often a reflection of that person's full-time commitment to something that ought to be of value to society like raising kids or volunteering in a hospital or caring for a sick relative. If you find something judgemental in what I do, make your own poll. I have nothing but respect for men and women doing work of all kinds in any field because they do contrast sharply with the loudest whiners on the polls who often don't work at anything at all, even on buffing up their pallid resumes. You can rant all you want with Webster or whatever, but the fact is, the harsh RL world, judges "the professions" to mean doctor/lawyer/teacher/engineer. That's the breaks. Note that I myself called this poll "Your RL Profession" since if someone choses to be a medical transcriptionist, that's a profession in a sense. But the job site/want ads category of "professionAL" means "doctor/lawyer/engineer/teacher". I"m sorry if that harms your utopianist vision of the world, but I didn't make it up.

From: Prokofy Neva Excuse me, but go on any job site like monster.com or The New York Times or craigslist.org and you will find that Marking is NOT under "professional". Professional means doctor/lawyer etc.
Geez, that's a given. Prkofy, have you ever met a sales or marketing proffessional? Have you ever tried the profession yourself? If so, were you any good at it? I can assure you, it does take years of training, and it is the most important, most valuable, and highest paying profession in the world. Without sales people, the whole of civilization would come to a grinding halt overnight, and that's not an exaggeration. There's an old axiom, which you would do well to learn. "The man who builds a better mousetrap - or a better anything - would starve to death if he waited for people to beat a pathway to his door. Regardless of how good the product or service might be, it has to be sold." George Washington was a sales person. Ben Franklin was a sales person. In fact the best salesman who ever lived was a carpenter's son from Nazareth; you might have heard of him. The bread you ate for breakfast this morning was only available to you because a sales person made sure a farmer's grain got a mill, that the mill turned the wheat into flour, that the flour was delivered to a baker, that the baker turned the flour into bread, and that the bread got to the store shelf. I might add that that store only exists because a sales person makes sure people want to shop there, just as the company you work for exists because sales people make sure its products or services get sold. The college you attended exists because sales people make sure students want to be enrolled there. You exist because your parents once upon a time put on that great little sales pitch we call courting. You literally owe your life and your livelihood to sales people, and your comments belittling us are beyond ignorant, and insulting to say the least.

From: someone I am in marketing management, and I am glad to see that we've narrowed down the entire population's employment into 4 categories. hehe 1. Could you start your own poll if you are unhappy? 2. Could you acquire some awareness of the fact that the poll is not about RL categories and their contents or discontents, but... 3. An effort to have a straw poll with a rough categorization in a quickly-eyeballed way to see if IT/Computer technicians who are skilled at the game's tools are the majority of the game, or if artists are the majority, or roughly equal, and then to see if "ALL OTHER" which necessarily has to be divided into THE PROFESSIONS and THE OTHER OCCUPATIONS has a significant read-out. That's all. So take your complaints to YOUR OWN EFFORTS TO MAKE A POLL and to THE SOCIETY AT LARGE.

Yes. because we all know that a poll in which 100 people respond is going to give us an accurate assessment of the occupational breakdown of the other 19,900 people in SL.

From: Ingrid Ingersoll Geez. Merriam-Webster dissagrees with you.
Main Entry: 1pro·fes·sion·al
b : having a particular profession as a permanent career <a professional soldier> c : engaged in by persons receiving financial return <professional football> Having spent years working in a lawfirm there is a huge difference between professional and Professional. They had a whole separate HR department and hiring system for the "Professionals" ... as inaccurate and irritating as that may be; that is the way it works. I finally started thinking of myself as a non-Professional professional.

Chip is concerned about this poll from forum posters being INACCURATE.
*Faints dead away*.
Then I'm sure he'll agree that when "2/3 of the forum posters say they don't want telehubs in the New Continent" he won't say "The Community Has Spoken"
Where are we now on this:
IT/Internet/Computers/Communications/Telecom 34 43.04% Part-Time/Low-Wage/Services/Retail/Health Worker 6 7.59% Professional/Lawyer/Doctor/Teacher/Engineer (Non-Computer) 14 17.72% Media/Arts/Entertainment/Writer/Editor/Artist/Actor 25 31.65%
Well, first of all, I got 79 people to answer a poll. That's fairly good already for a poll just a few hours into its life, in a land where polls aren't accurate, and don't get answers.
And even this very rough-and-ready categorization, which many people have said sucked (without bestirring themselves to spend the 2 minutes it might take to make their own poll) tells us that::::
A bare majority of the forum posters are IT/Computer types -- 34 percent -- but not 50 percent, and not "the overwhelming majority". Another big chunk -- 25 percent (but still only one quarter) -- are artists/media/etc.
And the OTHER people together are 20 percent.
So there are a lot of computer professionals posting, the raw majority of this admittedly very straw poll.
And there are a lot of artists/media/entertainment people too.
But there are also others...yet they are in the minority. Distinctly. Still...enough to have a voice.
Now if we unpacked these 2 OTHERS and differentiated them a little more to put like:
Sales Finance College
Well...we'd still have something that would add up to 20 percent, even allowing for the few who "didn't like the categories" or "didn't get the categories" because....
most of the79 people answering the poll had NO TROUBLE going in and clicking off:
1 IT/Computer or... 4 Artist/Media/Entertainment
so...there you go.
