I'd be interested to see if forum posters fall into several broad groups of people in various professions. I've somewhat arbitrarily grouped them, so if you have a better way to group them, make your own poll. I've tried to capture what I think are some of the fault lines among the game population -- technical vs. non-technical, professional vs. minimum wage, college vs. profession, etc. If you are "college" check off "part-time" since I'm assuming most college students have some kind of part-time job at least of the minimum wage variety, at least during summers.
It is set up so you can post anonymously so that you do not have to put in your RL info.
1. Internet/Internet Technology/Computers/Communications/Telecoms/
2. Part-Time/Low-Wage/Sales/Merchandise/Services/Health Worker/
3. Professional/Lawyers/Doctors/Engineers
4. 3. Graphics/Artists/Entertainment/Media/Writers/Editors/
I left out this category:
5. Finance/Bankers/Economists/Marketing/Financial Analysis
If you are in this category, leave a message. Can't re-do polls I don't think once they start, but if there are enough bankers playing this game as a hobby, let's hear from them lol. I've run into a few in the game.

I own a web based business that provides employment services to the health care industry. I hire professional web developer and web hosting company. My previous career was as the executive director of two community based non-profit human services agencies, one providing children/family services and the second providing services to the elderly.

well, your poll options and the numbers in your post are different.
to go by the numbers in your post, I am #1, #4, and #5
but on #1, I am not a programmer. The engineers took the keyboard away from me.

I do hardware cryptography - kind of weird, but somebody has to do it. I am really curious to see what the largest percentage of people in SL do in RL.

OK, I fixed the numbers in the text of the message compared to the poll.
Also, nobody is required to state their profession here, they can hit the poll and post anonymous since the "anonymous" option is clicked off.
I think we will see that some professions simply straddle some of these traditional divisions. Like anyone doing health services in our modern world, as Merwan pointed out, has to have a heavy web interface going. So either they or a significant part of their staff has to be IT.

I would think anything in the non-profit sector would be in "services" but I should have added "non-profit" to the list I guess.

Corporate trainer in the financial industry with a background in web design/development and a degree in theatre... formerly an office temp and convenience store clerk, not to mention semi-professional thespian, costumer and published author.
I hit all four categories. Do I get a prize?

Yay for the poll. Early results definitely refute your two demographic idea, Prok. These results don't indicate that everyone's a tech or a housewife. However, you're vindicated on the technical user aspect. There are definitely a lot of tech workers here. The interesting thing is that the relative number of tech workers here, versus other MMORPG, is probably lower than in many other MMORPG, such as Everquest or EVE, but probably higher than in games like TSO. Of course, there's no ready way to test this statement, so don't regard it as anything more than speculation.
Myself? I either stand in front of a copier all day copying medical records or attend university. Not a technical job, but certainly not a creative one either. Then again, it's only temporary. I hope.

I hope. Geez, Ardith, are you blind? "Early results" of a very skewed poll because it's in a setting of a self-selected 10 percent of the game's players actually prove my point because it shows 17 are IT and 7 are artists (is that your category?) I think we're going to find that the game's demographics are roughly divided between IT/tech workers and the female part-time/services/retail kind of people. That's my working premise. I don't have the numbers. And I don't think the numbers will come out of this poll .But you can't prove me wrong by citing even my own poll, even if it proves me right LOL Because forum polls are notoriously gamed and skewed. So you go in the college group, as part-time and services. IT people, college kids and housewives -- that's the game.

From: someone Hm. Needs "Student" and "Professional Slacker." As I explained, students go in the "part-time" box if they can. I'm going to assume they have part-time jobs. They work during the year or at least during the summer. OK, so I was right, it is all Trustifarians, bah.

That line also includes "low wage" "part time" and "services". That's not me. I'm a female professional. Mind blowing isn't it?
