I couldn't vote because I fit into two categories. I've owned a sales & marketing business for 11 years, and recently I've begun work to start new graphic design/animation/digital filming business.

You have to pick one.

It is not about what you did for years.

It is what you are doing now, since that's relevant to game culture.

If you are in a new business involving film/graphics, click off the one with media/entertainment.

Like I said, complaints about the poll don't get directed to me, for attempting to do this research, they go back to yourself, and your own efforts to make a better, refined poll.

no, i'll just complain about yours :p

hard to see it being worth the effort prok... the sample set is so limited.

"It is what you are doing now, since that's relevant to game culture."

actually prok, experience leads to perspective which is exactly what you are trying to get at right?

In most other job sites I've surfed, Marketing often gets lumped in with Arts/Design/Advertising.

Marketing if it involves graphic art/ads/media placement, but marketing toys or Tupperware or something is just plain retail/services.

Make your own poll if you and your friends don't like the way the categories are set up.

Because it will tell us something about the culture of people posting here?

Oh, and Professional Assassin - IM me for details on that...

Toy, start your own poll? Or put agriculture into "services". It is a service to bring food to people to eat, whether slow or fast.

Every single one of those many hats goes in no. 1, IT/Internet/communciations, etc.

which is interesting but i don't know how many people, many of whom try to keep a solid dividing line b/w RL and SL, will participate.

i do disagree with your "what are you doing now" comment -- you are trying to gain insight on people's perspectives right? which is driven by their experience...

anyway, don't know why i'm fencing with you about this... i guess i just hate putting people in boxes, especially over-generalized ones

take care :)

Did I say I'm not still running my old business? It IS about what I did for years, because I'm still doing it. I didn't say I RAN a sales & marketing business. I said I've been running it for the past 11 years.

Besides, my experience is EXTREMELY relevent to game culture. Without the knowledge I've gained about consumer psychology, advertising, personal motivation, leadership, etc., I wouldn't be able to do the things I do in SL. Why are you being so narrow in your view?

I also edited my post by the way before I realized you had responded. I thought I'd get it changed in time, but it looks like I was too slow. I'd encourage you to re-read it.

Foreseti is right you know... you have an option of using a max of 10 choices, why did you lump things into four broadly placed ones?

Ingrid, who markets stuff, goes in Professional? Huh? No, she goes in retail. Retail/services/part-time/low-wage. Even if her wage is high. She is not in one of the classic "professions" requiring years of training, like doctor/lawyer/teacher/engineer.

Wrong again... look stuff up before you open your mouth. You'll look like less of an ignoramus.

A few of my responsibilities as a marketing manager are:

1. Organizing ad campaigns (not sure what that is? look it up)
2. market analysis
3. developing packaging for products
4. developing marketing tools for the sales department (catalogs, print ads)

The job required a university degree as well as years of technical trainning after to master graphic design programs - essential when you're doing product development and packaging. I have no direct contact with the mass retailers that we do business with. That's sales.

I have an office, I have staff. I report directly to the CEO. I'm sorry that as a female, I'm not fitting into to your stereotype. Must be unsettling for you.

and the female part-time/services/retail kind of people.

GAG Are you in some kind of time warp?

seems the choices are so limited and the creator is deciding which you fit into makes this whole poll a farce

Maybe it's ammo for a lecture on how the anti-business technocrati, by dominating forum opinion, are trying to drive poor honest hard-working capitalists out of business? And even though they appear to be the majority, they're actually out of touch with what the man in the street really wants, which apparently has something to do with the freedom to construct flashing spinning billboards wherever he pleases?

Just a wild guess.

Excuse me, but go on any job site like monster.com or The New York Times or craigslist.org and you will find that Marking is NOT under "professional". Professional means doctor/lawyer etc.

Geez, that's a given.

I'm so impressed with your RL training and RL skills, Ingrid that I have *got* to wonder how you find SO MUCH TIME to post, especially DURING THE DAY, especially in answer to MY EVERY POST lol.

Could it be that I'm working at my various jobs which also involved years of training LOL? But I can flip windows?

I think all your stuff can be summed up pretty well by this phrase: selling stuff. Marketing goes in Marketing. I put "retail" in one of my boxes. Professional means "the professions" like doctor, lawyer.

Maybe you want RL marketing to have a better name and profile as an occupation by being considered "professional" but the rest of the world doesn't share your expectations LOL.

I'm happy to see Aimee put up that post. You'll see if it is answered honestly that we can see quite a few people who fit in one or the other category.

Well it's too early to tell but right now we have

1 vote for middle-Aged Stay-At-Home Female Part-Time/Low-Wage Worker (I bullied poor Arbel into it)

0 votes for 20-Something Male College Students with Help from Mom & Dad or High-Tech Part-Timer

I assume we will be hearing from peoples ALTS soon??

So I'm guessing prok is a housewife of some sort*, given the prolific and voluminous nature of his/her posts. Nobody slacks that much, posts, and still gets paid. Well, not in currency anyway.

What do *you* do, Prok? Or does the poll not include your particular pastime.

*(Given the SL population, many are, but prok is the special kind that doesn't really do much, apparently.)

Geez. Merriam-Webster dissagrees with you.

Main Entry: 1pro·fes·sion·al

b : having a particular profession as a permanent career <a professional soldier> c : engaged in by persons receiving financial return <professional football>
