Anyone remember the heat J.Lo took for using the N word? She is Puerto Rican and they use the word the same as Black Americans, but people were ready to nail her to the cross.


As I stated in my longer post, I think all people should be held to the same accountablity for using these words, no passes for getting a ghetto card or being the race that the slur is intended for.

Having read this entire thread, Shiryu, the only person who made any statements like that was in fact Anshe herself.

What if a Japanese woman with a not so very good singing voice uses the "n-word"? More importantly, would it have been better if she did it in Rap?

Despite all the inane off topic babbling in this thread I will attempt to give my definition of hate speech. I know it's more fun to joke around, than discuss an uncomfortble subject, but at least give it a try.

Hate speech is when is person is slammed because of their race (and this does include racial heritage), sexual preference (which really isn't a preference at all) and possibly because of their country of origin. I mention racial heritage because I posted an anti-hate message a few months back and got prompty told than my Jewishness was not a race but a religion. That was news to me and I am so glad that someone finally set me straight. I can become a non Jew overnight, it seems, by converting to some other race I guess!

All kidding aside neither Second Life or First Life is any place for this kind of warped behavior. Since I live in the USA I can't turn people in for free speech but I sure as hell can in Second Life.

hate speech:

hate speech starts with a disregard for another person. and that's the hard part to point out. how do you show out disregard? even if someone is caught doing this, then that person can weasel their way around it all. why can they do this? because disregard usually shows up in words, and words are very malleable.

yes, because there is no disregard. but it confuses people who don't get the idea the hate speech starts with disregard. people think it starts with intent, but the harm caused isn't caused by intention... it's caused by not considering the feelings of another person. intentional disregard only makes it worse.

Hate speech is when you discount much of an entire discussion as inane babbling and then inject your own observations about the subject at hand.

Ok, to me, hate speech is kind of like preaching:

You want to spread the word about your intolerant opinion (except that preaching is just where you want to spread word about your belief system).

I find it deplorable that our very own president spews hate speech on gay marriage.

In this vein, I don't believe either of the initial subjects of our scrutiny practiced hate speech.

Hate speech did not occur in Anshe's original thread. Stupidity, bigotry, and insensitive mudslinging happened, but no one deliberately and systematically attempted to incite hatred and violence toward a particular group.

Hate speech has not happened in this thread, for the same reason. However, in and around some very good comments, some people have tried to use "hate speech" to discredit other people's arguments. That's mudslinging, too, and, well, kinda stupid.

So what ever happened to Korg? This thread is missing an irrational lunatic to keep it really interesting. Let me guess, the police found him swinging from his shower curtain after one too many crushing defeats in the forum.

I agree with this statement. In my opinion it depends on the situation, in what context the statements were made and the intention of the person that makes the comments. For example, being Puerto Rican, I might be offended if someone uses the word "spic" in a derogatory manner, but I didn't feel offended when John Leguizamo called his comedy special "Spic-o-rama".

In general, I try not to let ignorant people get to me. I have encountered many ignorant folk (the ones that don't try to actively insult you by making these kinds of statement, but are instead just making the statements out of lack of knowledge) and instead of getting all pissy about their comments, I try and educate them. For example there was an incident in which a kid from the U.S. made a comment regarding what Puerto Ricans are supposed to look like, pointing at a friend who has much darker skin than mine. I told him that she was actually from the U.S. while I am from P.R., which left him a bit confused while he tried to comprehend how this could happen. I just told him how there's no specific Puerto Rican looks (being our mixed nationalities/races) and that we come in all colors, sizes and shapes.

I also had an incident in which I was asked if people in P.R. live in houses or in "bohios" (housing similar to teepees which were used by our ancestors). A friend of mine had an incident in which someone asked her if we use cars in P.R., to which she sarcastically answered that we ride giant cockroaches. While she lost her patience at the person's ignorance, I opted to educate them and give them enough information so that they would not make comments that might offend some people.
