Spend some time really really reading some of the longest posts from the person - not threads like those, but other posts - and you will see said person is quite literate.

Oh, not implying that said person is less than literate. Even good writers can make leaps and bounds in rhetoric when they are frazzled and want to make a sharp and impacting point.

Such a humorous thread. You're like a bunch of cackling hens. First the issue is race. Then the issue is which race she supposedly offended most. Then it became the so-called selling of whores.

The real issue is that some of you have this major hard-on against Anshe and are spinning in overdrive at the slightest possibility of knocking her down a peg. One can easily scroll through this thread and see who is sincere and who is putting on self-righteous airs in hopes of making Anshe look bad.

Did she screw up? Absolutely. The person who mentioned the ethnic originations of her real estate signs has done so repeatedly and if you ask me, each of those comments has been delivered to use race as a weapon in eliciting a response. He got his response and it's unfortunate it happened that way.

Anshe should suffer some for her remarks. Regardless of intent, a certain respect for others should be enforced. If someone cannot be respectful, they should pay a price. My concern is that I have never felt that LL applies justice equally and the richest woman in the world is not going to suffer -- even after you all are cackled out.

Not pointing this out to be a dick, Bruno. Just the opposite. People define "respectful" in many different lights, and I do not believe that the way she *tried* to use those words are any more offensive than your post above.

You can label it "cackling hens" all you want to. My raising the point is for the exact reason you are stating in your final paragraph. There has been a pattern of bad, abusive behavior that has often gone unpunished, presumably because of the wealth. This player makes themself look bad enough without anyone's help.

Do I have a bias at this point? Certainly, I make no bones about that - it is borne out of watching her get away with stuff over and over again. I hope both people involved are punished for it, but my suspicion is that only one will be. You have also missed out on the private attacks that the thread starter has made on the other person in that thread - you are right, that was the culmination of something between both of them, and it has gone both ways.

I am hoping future "bizarre turns" on the Forums will include more people being nice to each other and getting along, as that is the sort of bizarreness that is welcome in my backyard. History, however, shows otherwise...

Too often, discrimination against people of Asian descent get unnoticed or ignored. I can't speak for her, but she might have been making a point that what he had said is just as offensive as if he had spoken against African Americans.

The title of this thread is "What constitutes hate speech?".

I would love 1000 threads like this where people can discuss the nature of communication, what is implied and what is construed, and at what point do people take offense.

It would be nice for people to "just get along", however by marginalizing or silencing threads such as this one (where people get to vocalize where their own personal boundaries are), there would "just be a silence" which doesn't seem like getting along to me.

You can play the devil's advocate. Personally, I find the word vile, having been called it, along with a monkey and a spic and told that "it's all the same because you're ruining the USA" by a player in SL. Stating what happened, or what someone said, is different, yes.

As an Asian-Avatarian, I'm fine being addressed as an "Oriental" (although that totally doesn't make sense with our map layout), but the term in the "real world" does have striking offensiveness for more than some as the following shows:

So, again, context. Anyone else remember the scene in Wild Wild West where a certain kickin' villain announces to Will Smith that he learned his moves from a "Chinaman"? I find it hard-pressed to find many other ethic slurs that would be viewed as "humorous" in that light -- even if the martial arts were replaced by any number of other stereotypical activities. So strange.

In some parallel dimension (yes, this is like a sci-fi scenario), African-Americans are called Afrericans, and for all we know, "Quartzylplex" is one of the most hideous racial slurs known across the multiverses. Gosh... we have so much to learn from Octavia Butler!
