It takes more than one person to "develop and run" an MMOG. I am a computer programmer RL and have taken on group projects. This by itself is tricky. I am educated, trained, participate as a hobby, and mark my career with dealing with how computers and software works.
Are you alleging that throwing in the "Massive multiplayer" part and the whole huge legal part makes it somehow easier? No, of course not, it makes it way harder. The fact that they have a "State of Play" conference on the legal aspects of online gaming is evidence with how important and tricky ironing out legal issues is. What I posed to you was the most realistic suggestion I could come up with on how Linden Lab would possibly handing minor-minor sexual contact in kiddieSecondLife if they were to not expressly forbid it. It is an insurmountable task without a great deal of effort, money, and manpower.

Well I guess we need to delete the 12th grade.

On one hand, I'm reminded of keywords like "consenting adults". And then I think about the "age of adulthood". But then, I think about the "age of consent" and how that varies wildly around the world, but usually goes from 14-18. Then, my mind shifts focus to how it's alright to show so much killing on TV but even more consensual, loving sexuality is frowned upon. And then, I'm reminded of one of my fave stories -- The Emperor's New Clothes. And after that, my mind's eye branches outwards and starts to scope some transmogrified cloud of imposing law. And then come the redundant, relativistic arguments about ethics and morality involving sexuality. And then, as much as I'd like to generalize minors and heap them all in a bundle, I keep in mind that it comes down to the individual and that some "kids" are very mature emotionally and sexually and whatnot, while others are not. Then, I think about HORMONES. And I am also focused on the excellence of a person; the SL equivalent of YT from SC: brash, ballsy, yet streetsmart and savvy and accountable for one's own decisions. I can't relate a lot to thick lawbooks and blahblahblah a lot of the time, but I am starting to realize what my heart tells me: there are certain valleys in which words fail us.

I'm the father of two teenagers, and I'd rather have them having sexy chat and cybersex with someone their own age over the Internet than a whole host of other things that might get them into trouble.

Ok. Key point here Catherine. As a parent, you decide what you will and will not allow your children to do. However, you can no more tell me how to parent my child than I can tell you how to parent yours. (Not saying you did, trying to get to a point here.. hehe)..

So. What this really boils down to is that your personal feeling is that you would not allow your child to play on an SL kiddy grid for the reasons you state. Others have said they would allow their children to play on that grid. Point being, it is up to the parents to decide, and neither side is right or wrong. If LL doesn't offer it, someone else will (and as I stated before, many other places do).
