... I've seen boards where banned people are allowed back in after a decent interval but are required to wear a "reformed flamer" tag for specific time period. ...

Maybe we could even have a "star" rating system so all the nice "never insulted anyone" posters could be "five star posters." People who get warnings could get say... a skull and crossbones instead of a star.

That way when you are responding to someone with five jolly rodgers next to the name, you know what your getting into and if you see a thread with two of these folks going at it you know not to step in.

On the other hand having five skulls beside your name might be the coolest thing.

:)

I would get five skulls, despite the fact that I've never insulted anybody - if the other posters gave out the ratings.

I think this would taint the way the posts are read. You'd end up thinking:"Oh this person is just an asshole, I'm not going to think about his post" when maybe this person actually has something to contribute.

Or the flip side "This person has five stars. What a fluffy goodie-goodie!"

Coco, there are many people, myself included that feel you have personally insulted them. Just because *you* feel you have not, does not mean *they* do not feel otherwise. Despite that, you are still here and people continue to engage in discussions with you. Most of us I think enjoy doing so even if we disagree with what you are saying.

I think one place where you and I disagree is when you say you are fighting for free speech and expression for everyone. And I personally believe there is no reason to really fight for it because it already exisits. :)

I'd also ... throw in "If your topic is met with general derision, refrain from repeating it at every opportunity." ;)

If people did that, there'd be no general human progress. Amazing how many dead people whose topic met with general derision, and yet could not refrain from repeating it at every opportunity, are regarded as great and hallowed definers of modern civilization.

Christ, Confucius, the Buddha, Sun Tzu, Paul, Kepler, Galileo, Newton, Einstein, Darwin, the Huxleys A. & J., the Adams J. & S., Malthus, Machiavelli, Dante, Milton, Chengho, Hirobumi, Dewey, James H. & J., Chandrasekhar, and on and on.

No, I'm not comparing anyone on these forums to that group. But I'd sooner listen to a thousand jabbering hyenas in hopes of finding one Milton, than to listen to the "silence" of forum consensus.

As interesting a suggestion as this is, I have a feeling it would end up getting as messed up as the current in-world rating system. :p

Really who are the "many"? Enquiring minds want to know. or is this a hyperbole?

The "many" (in addition to myself) would include those I have read posts from that stated they felt Coco was personally insulting them [at that time].

This thread is going well. I do hope you are not trying to stir something up?

Probably best to just leave it at that. No sense in dredging up more silliness.

Me no way.

EDIT:

I'm just holding everyone to the same standard that I'm held to. Fair is fair.

Actually, the only reason things haven't calmed is because we still have a handful of people making sure the sore never scabs over... they have accomplished this by repeatedly bumping old threads to stir argument, by interrupting and disrupting otherwise calm threads with accusations and fear-mongering, and generally doing everything they can to make sure no one gets the space to decompress.

The rules are not failing. It is simply that there are always going to be certain people who believe the 'ends justify the means' and they just will not abide by rules.

Once LL wises up and deals with them, things will settle. And if they do not deal with them, they will not.

Who knows -- perhaps LL will shut this place down. I begin to think it best. Especially since it is repeatedly demonstrated that those who will disrupt have no interest or concern for the well-being of the forums... only in making sure that if they can't have their way, no one will be able to enjoy this place.

Kind of sad, really. But pretty par for the course for the ones doing it.

I read this thread so fast that, not only did I not absorb the content, but I hurt my eyes as well.

errrm....
Just wanted to put down a marker that I'm reading and absorbing quietly here without having to re-splurge my opinions everywhere. Realised it, and yearned perhaps for a scrap of recognition for the achievement.
My shortest ever post, I think. But then...it is about nothing.
OMG, it keeps getting longer.......

Or better yet... If everyone else seems to disagree with you and think you're flat out wrong, then maybe, maybe, (and I know this sounds crazy, but stay with me) just maybe it's you and not everyone else on Earth that is wrong.

Before going on and on and on beating that horse, take a step back, do some research. If you still believe you are The One and that the rest of the poor unwashed masses actually do have blinders on to Your Truth, which you are the sole guardian of, then come at it with facts, rather than baseless accusations and your womanly/manly intuition.

Don't claim to speak for the silent masses teeming at your doorstep that are just too meek to speak up for themselves. Don't claim to speak for anyone but yourself. State your opinion. State your reasoning and your facts. State it logically and articulately. State it without resorting to whining and typing in all caps. (Which doesn't actually make it any truer or louder for me, though others may have better software than I do. To me it just looks desperate.)

If you do all this, who could possibly disagree with you?

Noted, and appreciated. Not to mention, I admire the willpower.
