From: Bruno Buckenburger I have no problem with individual users having this feature. And Yes I don't think I actually stated my opinion. I agree Bruno, allowing this feature to be used as an option is a good idea. But since we all are adults and this game is for 18yrs and over, no, we should not be censored.

From: Jonquille Noir No.
Words have no more power than you choose to assign them. It's the intent behind the words where the offense lies, and profanity filters can not judge intent. Only our Admins can do that.
Calling someone a 'whore' should be no more offensive than articulately implying that they have sex for money or gifts. The intent is the same. The rest is semantics.
And for anyone who doesn't believe a well placed curse word can speak volumes, I submit: "You're the vulgarian, you fuck!" * wild applause *

From: Pathfinder Linden OK, enough saying "please." Any more personal attacking nonsense and it's "formal warning" time for anyone involved (note: formal warnings go on your permanent record and can ultimately result in permanent forum banning).
<sits back and watches, hoping for the best but damn well planning for the worst> I sympathize with your plight Pathfinder. Some have mentioned how we should be able to handle profanity as adults yet some others have shown no proof of being adults. Without singling out anyone, there have been warnings issued to the same people repeatedly. Since I have been on this board I have seen this over and over and over again, yet these people still pop up (or their alts pop up) and still pull the same stunts. Send an email to the Grand Poo Bah Phillip and ask him for real dictatorial powers. And start chopping these same offenders off at the knees. Kick them out for 30 days on their first offense. Second, gone. Stay in game, stay out of the forums. If we're all supposed to be adults then we should assume responsibility like adults and suffer the consequences instead of being coddled.

Why? We are all adults right?? Even if the new “Teen” group comes in they are 13. Lets get real people we all know the words. I love some people get made when you use the word Fuck, but then they have not problem using the word F$%@. Come one say it or don’t. I have never used words like that in the forum other then this post but you know why can’t I? Been to some of the #1 places Second Life? Most of them are Adult in nature. If you don’t mine Fucking why do you mind using the word?

Actually, I voted against the filter at first, but on reflection, I really don't see how it would be a bad idea; I just don't know whether the forum software is capable of implementing it. I think that if it's not already a part of vbulletin, that this would be a great "up-and-coming" feature that forum managers could implement. A forum member can already ignore other members that they don't agree with; why not an option that you could set whatever kind of filter you want, organized in the following way: Filter by WORD (Create a list of taboo words for yourself) Filter by POSTER (Basically an ignore list) Filter by combination of POSTER + WORD(s) Results could show in any combination, according to the the individual's preferences Ignore WORD Ignore POST Ignore THREAD So, for example: IF WORD = (shit) OR (fuck) OR (whore) OR (cunt) THEN IGNORE WORD Or, more elaborately, IF POSTER = (Jane Avatar) AND WORD = ("goodbye" OR ("leaving SL" OR ("leaving Second Life" THEN IGNORE THREAD This doesn't have to apply just to profanity, forum users could determine any sort of critera to filter out, if they find it objectionable or don't wish to view it for any reason.

What do all these pics have to do with the topic? Nothing.

Catherine, Another idea... aren't there browser based plug-ins that filter out profanity? I skimmed something online about an application called Proxomitron. Maybe there is something useful there?
Using a plug-in would not only remove the workload of setting up filters from Linden Labs but would also protect you from profanity on ALL sites, not just SL.
