No, we don't need filters but people could use a little restraint and dare I say class. Like the 26 page thread that hasn't been closed yet, almost everyone came across as a jackass, the use and misuse of profanity only highlighting it.

I gots fucking class and restraint up the ying yang! But I sooo fucking agree that some assholes really need to watch how they fucking use profanity and should only fucking use it to highlight there fucked up point and not to fucking use it just for fucks sake...

Whoa, it sounds like I've wandered into a longshoreman's bar.

<looks around for the spittoon and orders a shot of JD>

OK, first of all...there will never be "profanity filters" here. They are technically useless, but that's not the point. We don't WAN'T to curtail language.

Everyone here is an adult. This ain't DisneyLand, and Mickey Mouse isn't going to swat you with a stick if you say "holy crapola."

We don't want blatant personal attacks. That's all.

So if you feel like getting a little "salty" with your language, that's fine. Just use COMMON SENSE. Don't use your language in a way that attacks people personally, and you'll be right as rain. And don't be disgusting just for disgusting's sake. We think you're smarter than that. Please prove us right. ;)

<orders another shot of JD from the tattooed bartender and says "dammit, that's tastes like hell">

<gets in a barfight>

<opens a can of Black Mage Whoopass and clears the bar out>

Swearing is an art form. In the hands of someone intelligent an curse word like fuck becomes an artistic form of punctuation. Commonly a verbal exclamation point, as in Fuck No! This you will see convesy a lot more emphasis on the point of No, than does a simple explnation point. And if some thing is shit, it should be called shit. You can substitute dreck or crap if you wish, but theses terms convey something marginally unacceptable, whereas shit conveys something truly unacceptable. Similarly I can use terms like inane, inconsequential, pointless, silly and utterly lacking in merit, to convey my disdain for people who fall into the platitude of swearing only shows you are "ignorant."

Now we can be verbose and tie all this together by saying: No! This entire topic is utter crap, as it is inane and inconsequential whining by someone who obviously does not use their primary profanity filter, the one between their ears and behind their eyes. Given that software filters in the forums are easy to circumvent, the whole notion is utterly without merit. Finally it can be noted that there is a core responsibility on the part of every adult to behave in a civilized manner, and that evaluating the content of a message is best left to our individual discretion, and not the arbitrary whim of some programmer. Thus I will disregard this topic from further consideration.

Or we can say fuck this dumbass shit!

Personally if you are going to adress rudeness on the forums, why not start with personal attacks and people not being considerate of others, and ideas they may not agree with.

That's what we try to do, plain and simple. And we only intervene if it truly crosses a line. We think it's fine for people to disagree, and even argue a bit. As long as it doesn't cross that line into a blatant personal attack. It a fine line, but I think any adult knows when it is crossed.

I would agree with all of this. It reminds me of the recent forum debate over nudity. Like nudity in art, curse words themselves are not bad, particularly when used in a masterful way to punctuate the point of a story. On the other hand it becomes tiresome and banal when they are used to fill the vacuum left by a work devoid of actual rich meaning or content.

I say no. We're all adults and profanity exists and is used almost universally.

Pathfinder;

I'm sorry i think you misunderstood the poll. The poll is not to do away with anyones right to swear in the fourms. It is a poll asking if ppl would like the "option" of a filter to cut out the offensive language. I myself find certain words very offensive to woman and I would like the option of not reading them. For example the word "whore" there is no positive spin you can put on that word for me. A whore is a whore reguardless of how anyone sugar coats it.

So are you saying in fact that there will never be consideration of this option?

Leaving like you promised would probably be the most expedient remedy.

That or not reading the forums. You could also use the ignore function I believe, or if you are even more inclined, program some kind of dynamic filter using perl and php to deliver what you want to your screen.

The tools exist, its just a matter of using them.

I voted yes, we definitely need a filter that randomly ass inserts profanity in every single post. :p

Yes maxx you have said that what 6 times in the past 24 hours. Apparently your advice means nothing to me. If my posts and my being in the forums bothers you as much as it apparently does. use the mute and ignore buttons at your disposal both here and in world.

Great advice you give why not take it yourself.

What would you want the filter to replace WHORE with? A blank? totally obscured word (like *****) or partially obscured word (WH**E) ?

No.

Words have no more power than you choose to assign them. It's the intent behind the words where the offense lies, and profanity filters can not judge intent. Only our Admins can do that.

Calling someone a 'whore' should be no more offensive than articulately implying that they have sex for money or gifts. The intent is the same. The rest is semantics.

And for anyone who doesn't believe a well placed curse word can speak volumes, I submit: "You're the vulgarian, you fuck!"
