(Was putting this in Foolish's thread, and decided to make it a thread of it's own.)

I don't think the problem is the moderators themselves. I think the problem is not enough moderators.

They need enough people to keep a closer eye on the forums, so that they don't have to depend so much on other people AR'ing, then responding to and considering the AR's. For one reason, that places too much importance on exactly who is likely to do the AR'ing and how much of it.

I think the forums have probably, over time, gotten out of hand as the game grows. And at the rate it's growing now, I think it's pretty imperative they put more people on the job.

On the job of actually making the forums approximate what the TOS says. Otherwise the TOS looks like a joke. And the moderation looks woefully inconsistant - when really the inconsistancy is doubtless the result of some posts or threads getting AR'd and many others not.

More moderators, keeping a closer eye on the forums and acting on their own (rather than mainly just reacting to AR's) would make the exercise more one of making sure fires didn't begin and rage out of control in the first place, rather than of putting them out after several people have already died.

These moderators should be impartial people and NOT previous or current players under another name.

Wow. Calling someone 'mommy' is now a personal attack. Woo. Someone call the press!

Allow me to rephrase --

Get over it you forum nanny. It isn't your job, and if it were, you'd suck at it.

Or less forums.

There are too many forums. If there was just classified and general. General could be ruled with an iron fist and general could just be spedific SL related topics. Then if people want other conversations they can go to 3rd party sites. These forums as-is are a PR nightmare.

Come on you two, that was just spiteful.

He makes a perfectly acceptable argument based on my thoughts: If they don't have time to give the moderation the work it needs to do it right, then hire another mod and distribute the load! This is the age accepted way of moderating boards as they grow!

No argument, but keep in mind why forums are split: Because a forum is getting so much traffic that threads fade off the bottom too fast for subjects to survive.

When you get too many threads in a paticular forum, that forum is traditionally split into it's primary sub-forums to allow newly created threads better 'page 1 time'.

For example, GAMES is getting hammered? Then split it into Computer Games and Traditional Games.

You recombine some of these threads, your going to miss a lot of what's said... (some would vite that's a good thing...)

Actually, I've already pointed out that LL would be much better off without these forums.

However, if they're remaining, this is how it is and anyone who can't take the heat really should stay out of the kitchen.

Don't add more moderators.

If the forums take more than a small part one part time employees day to manage DUMP THEM. Remove all forums other than announcements and the self help sections for building, scripting, animations, and textures. Any post not on those topics flat out delete, and IP ban the poster from SL.

The forum is nothing but trouble. It is a waste of resources and a soapbox for trolls.

Of course! Get rid of the forums! Get rid of the problem entirly!

And while we're at it, we should get rid of SL too! There are griefers and troublemakers there as well, and it takes the Lindens a lot of effort to keep them in check!

Ohhhh.... And can we get rid of the earth? Those humans have caused nothing but trouble since they got here!

<Sorry. Was trying to make a point with sarcasm. This is not meant as an attack against any person(s), but an obvious disagreement with thier views.>

SL is a 3D virtual world. That is what we pay for. We don't pay to have a dozen Linden Lab moderators constantly watching and controling a text based troll magnet. We could get that feature for free anywhere else on the internet.

The fourm is a bug, not a feature.

You see, that's an opinion. I disagree. Nothing more can be said beyond that.

Where the disagreement will be is on who those people are.

A very out-of-character remark, if you don't mind my saying so. And also I think it's a remark that is easy for one to say who has not been the victim of relentless and ugly forum bullying.

Most of the people claiming they are being "bullied" are the often the one's starting useless threads and have 1000's of posts. It's attention whoring in the first degree.

If everyone in SL abused the right to post 100's of times a week, the forums would be impossible to navigate.

The forums are a place to discuss issues, not think out loud.

I wasn't trying to be snide. I meant it quite sincerely. Discourse is always a two way street. If someone consistently finds themself feeling backed into a corner and on the defensive then odds are the reasons have as much or more to do with their own approach than that of others. At the end of the day we can only control our own actions and reactions, not those of others (no matter how much we may wish we could). If you hold the view that a random batch of humans can be socially engineered to behave to the satisfaction of the most sensitive among us then I can see your point. Personally I'm more of a realist and believe that constant railing against the inescapable fact that discourse is messy is rather a waste of time... time that could be spent engaged in dialogue rather than moralizing.

You calling me a dumbass?

Well, wouldn't that be par for the course.

God forbid there would be enough moderation to convince people they ought to pay attention to the TOS. God forbid anything should get in the way of your god-given right to call me whatever you like regardless of what the TOS says.

I'd have to say LESS moderators...
In fact, zero would be a good number.

Considering that the forums provide no income I cannot see them honestly putting much more time and effort into them, other than the effort it takes to pull the plug on them. There are so many more important areas of SL that need additional resources that would benefit all of SL, not just the minority that uses the forums. That should definitely take priority over adding moderators.

Then pull the plug on them. As I said before, some weeks ago, when Editorial Hare first suggested it, it probably is preferable to letting things go on as they are. I argued with him at first, then decided he was right. At least it would no longer be turning off new players. If people want to be nasty and vulgar and vicious on their own forums, who cares.

Apparently the Order of the Drama LLama needs to be made hereditary. Consider this a preemptive award.
