Adults on Teen Grid

Yeah, we're minors, and you just broke the rules by talking to us!!!!!

Simply because I feel that protecting kids is better accomplished with education and communitcation rather than automatic prohibition does not mean that I do not care about kids. Conversely I worked with kids on a regular basis for years as a juvenile prosecutor and family services counsel, and I have, in fact had a very exhaustive background check done on me in connection with working for kids.

I have also been a kid. A Kid who snuck out at night when my parents slept, who drank under-age, who enjoyed driving cars that were not my own, who grew up in a era when safe sex was not doing while you were drving, who went through the experimentation phase with just about everything we are supposed to say no to, who ditched school and was told that he was unsuitable for college. And some how grew up ok inspite of it.

Lokk you absolutely cannot protect your kids from everything, and bit part of the danger they pose comes from themsleves. However, you can do everything in your power to see that they are reasonably protected, that they are internet savvy, and that they feel like they can talk to you about situations that make them uncomfortable.

This does not make us all a sorry bunch. This simply means that we feel kids have enough responsibility to use the internet and SL, as long as reasonable precautions are taken. LL has worked hard to take those precautions, something slip through the cracks, somethings are beyone thier control. I have not seen anywhere in this discussion, at least, where any harm was done. It seems the contacts discussed were inadvertent or in the form of technical help? I mean we don't seriously stop our kids from talking to the public librarian, simply because she is an adult? I doubt very much she has had the background check done.

Nolan I think she is talking about our age in real years, not our maturity. If we went by maturity level (except when I am being paid to actually be mature!) then I am probably much to young for even the teen grid. Guess its Toon Town for me!

How has LL worked hard? When ppl can talk to these kids and send them content? LL said they would do extensive background checks on adults who came into contact with kids. Yet they allow private conversations to take place. I believed LL when they said they would protect the kids and IMO after reading about those who have broken the rules its abundantly clear that LL did not do enough.

Ahhh. Well, I am starting to middle school in the fall!

I don't know what to tell the faculty though, when they ask me why I am six feet tall, weight 205, and have a five o' clock shadow by last period !

Who derailed it Cat? People were informing us that there are holes in the system. You started threatening them. You have contributed nothing but ill will, based on personal issues you have with them.

Read what Jake has said, there's some valuable insight there. After you've done that, reply with your own ideas about how to fix the problem rather than attacking people who were SNAFUed by LL's oversights.

It's very, very obvious that your motivations here are soley driven by a need to get back at people you think have wronged you in the past.

You insinuate that Cubey, Chip and I could potentially be sex offenders and then have the audacity to claim you were insulted? Yeah, that's logical. As far as it being ok for LL, I respect what they are doing. They are putting as many safeguards in place as they feel necessary. They cannot control every communication a teen ever makes, no more so than you can or I can or anyone can. Teens are people, not brainless robots. They do have brains, and make decisions on their own. All you can do is protect them where you can, instill as much common sense into them as you can, and hope for the best.

BTW, did it occur to you for a moment that I didn't need to disclose any of this. If I had been doing something wrong, why on earth would I post "hey, I have been contacted too"?

Well my understand is that the conversations occurred in third party sites and in situations that were not on the grid. Apprently a loophole in the key system was discovered, and Ims and content were exchanged. I am not sure this is something LL intened to happen, and frnakly the minor involved was on the adult grid first. I also imagine this loophole will be dealth with. LL is being very reasonable.
