I'd like a splatch of purple (or other colorful) sims on the mainland with Burning Life 60/60/24/7/12/365, so people can live in cool homes like this. There is a serious disproportion at the moment, which is freakish because much of the early SL creation has its bedrock in wacky kewlness!
Some artists in SL are concerned to put up their builds because there's just not enough neighborhoods for it. They're worried because they might be reported as "greefers" without even being asked about their intentions, and there's not really any place to cluster these builds-o-freethought together, with the rare exceptions of sporadic appearances in certain sims and some of the older sims which have remained stable (like Welsh). We have plenty of regular houses and I do like suburbia, yes, but I'm all for more variety. ![]() What I like so far about Burning Life... it brings all of this together, you can make a four-headed elephant with concave eyes without being so self-conscious. You feel free. O, and we still need a block of sims named after the Wu-Tang Clan. Once again, I'll live in Rza. _____________________

I dont think so.....

I am amazed that someone would take offense at what is a quite tasteful and quite well produced object. I think it is in the minds of the would be sensors - what obsenity and depravity that THEY think is there. One cannot control what people see when they view art. All an artist can do is produce an object that has meaning for the artist and hope - HOPE - HOPE the viewing audience will be old enough, mature enough, and emotionally ready to accept the vision of the artist. The phallic symbol has been with mankind since the begining of time. It is only viewed now through puritanical eyes that cast an evil and foul pallor on the object that has been held up - even worshiped through millenea. We as Americans need to let go of our personal issues and appreciate everything around us for what it is, love it for what it is, accept it for what it is and - live and let live. Art has no purpose other than to be. This phallic symbol has no purpose other than to be.

Hi All, Thanks for your great feedback. I am afraid that we had a miscommunication in support about the content for Burning Life. Grimalkin's art is not only appropriate, I thought it was quite aesthetic as well. We have sent email and in world IM asking her to please reconstruct her sculpture. We apologize for the error, it is not our intent to censor artist's expressions in the Burning Life islands. The whippings will now commence. Cyn Boy oh boy, I love it when a Linden knows how to apologize in public to all wronged as well as to clarify and hopefully, undo the damage done to Grimalkin's fun BL piece! _____________________

If so I'm having a very good giggle here. _____________________

Well, I'm not an art critic nor an artist, but there's some dude named Michaelangelo who made the attached, excerpted from PBS which is not an organization known for pruient content. I did get a chance to get over there and am frankly shocked that the work was deemed offensive; there are two snapshots attached, showing in context and detail. Especially given the artist's statement above, I find this work to be tame compared to things I've seen in the Welcome Area. To my eye, if this build is offensive than so is the Transamerica Building just outside Linden Lab. I was expecting Serrano's Piss Christ when I read the original post. Is not Burning Life intended to be an artistic showcase? There are stone buttes made by nature that are more suggestive. I dont agree with censorship in any way shape or form, but this is the tackiest most idiotic thing I have seen lately. It is not art in the same sense that "nature" is art. It is not art in the michelangelo sense of nude sculpture. I find it offenseive. I find it offensive becasue it is a giant penis oozing liquid all over the ground, but if it had a purpose, or some kind of meaning beyond that - something that made it "art" - I wouldn't care so much. It would at least be art. I also find it offensive for this "thing" to be favourably compared to michelangelo in the same sentence. Piss Christ is prefereable, at least some thought went into that. . _____________________

As you can see from the attached, Burning Life and even some of the main grid - PG sims no less - is infested with body parts and depictions of sexual conduct. I DEMAND that all of these so-called "creations" be REMOVED immedately! Think of the children! There is no "money shot" in any of these builds. ![]() _____________________

Dianne, did you read Grim's first post in this thread? Did you read the symbolism she was trying to convey with this art? Just curious as you seem to think there was no "thought" behind this build.
In all of this, I was only offended that a build like this had to be done in a "mature" sim. But that has been a long time argument of mine. hehe Thank you Lindens for clearing up this situation! Miscommunications happen, and it is always great when they can be rectified. Glad to hear this exhibt will be able to stay in Burning Life. And Grim, can't wait to get in world and see it soon! ![]() _____________________

Cyn I will also claim that this is "art" and though lots of folks will be offended by it, if you try to remove it, I will whine and complain about it in the forums, even though I am fully aware that it is not so much art as it is just a big stupid joke on everyone. This will force you to (again), go against every ounce of reason you have and allow me to put this horrible thing on display no matter how many folks I get angry about it. Because it is "art." ![]() I wonder if so many folks would defend this kind of stuff if I made it a gigantic bleeding vagina four stories tall??? All this proves, is that Burning Life should be a juried show instead of a lottery!! . _____________________

Is a penis, a historic symbol of fertility and life, really that scary? That offensive?
![]() Behold the Kokopelli, a Native American god of fertility, who presides over both the success of crop growth and ability for mothers to conceive children: ![]() Note his erection. Though commercial representations of this deity remove the phallus for their own reasons, the original depiction often included an erect penis. Shall we scrub away the artifacts that contain the R-rated Kokopelli? Shall we scrub away the thousands of years of cultural memory that the penis represents? edit: This is a scary sentiment: All this proves, is that Burning Life should be a juried show instead of a lottery!! _____________________

So next year then, I am going to pose as a cranky little kid and build an even bigger erection, with even more realistic sperm shooting out, and completely realistic skin texture! OK. I will also claim that this is "art" and though lots of folks will be offended by it, if you try to remove it, I will whine and complain about it in the forums, even though I am fully aware that it is not so much art as it is just a big stupid joke on everyone. OK. This will force you to (again), go against every ounce of reason you have and allow me to put this horrible thing on display no matter how many folks I get angry about it. I'm not sure who you're talking about in this sentence. To me, it made perfect sense to defend this build. After speaking with Grim, I personally was convinced that she made this build neither to be "funny" nor to try and be an ass, which is sounds like what you think she was trying to do, and what you're saying you would do next year. Because it is "art." ![]() Yep. I wonder if so many folks would defend this kind of stuff if I made it a gigantic bleeding vagina four stories tall??? I would. All this proves, is that Burning Life should be a juried show instead of a lottery!! All your post proved is that you have little patience for other people's interpretation of art and freedom of speech. If you don't like it, don't go see it. Rather simple. |

What a Relief!!
08-31-2005 19:18
I was so dismayed when I found out Grim's artwork was being scrutinized as being too explicit for SL. I am new here and love the freedom of expression and openness that I have found here. I was beginning to reconsider my experience here when I found out that there might be some sort of censorship. What a relief that this is not the case after all.
