Yes I'll be at base but got a slim budget. Spent lots of money on clothes. I like having enough clothes to travel around SL.

You can build anything! Aircrafts, guns, anything you imagine. Just need to know how to script it and make it.

Two sides to EVERY story.

<rubs her face and sighs, stubbing out a smoke>

Alright.. last night.. I was going to post. And I wasn't in the best mood about this. As someone said, tomorrow is another day and well -- it's here. And so am I.

I've got mixed feelings about you 'pwners'. First I heard of you was some rather aggressive discussion from people who I thought were quiet, if slightly manic creator types. Might be time to re-evaluate my impressions of people.

When your 'pack' -- I name you this only because you reminded me of a bunch of l33t w0lvz with a few people who actually knew how to spell 'you' correctly -- showed up at Nexus Nash's place and we talked, I thought "Hmm, they don't seem sooo bad."

And then I was told that you all had started a war. At first I was MAD, because we DO have a community here, and disruptions usually come in the way of a new script or something racy worn by Sassy Apple or Taessa Weaver. Sure, there is the occasional Tower o' Lag, but even that tends to get resolved in a timely fashion.

When a bunch of people start roaming around in fatigues with guns talking about bunkers and they AREN'T playing a scripted game, I guess a few bells went off. When I went to join the 'war' and found the server locked for the most part, it was amusing to try to battle my way in.

What I saw was not a bunch of WWIIO folks running around on a killing spree, but most of them grouped into one small area (which was pretty tactically constructed so as to allow them decent shooting visibility and keep most bullets away) with a mess of 'us' on the outside harrassing them. I took my potshot because it was fun to see if one would make it through (which it did) and that was that; time to go harrass the Planners in CP City AGAIN. I'm gunna get you Casval.

My overall impression is that you guys are an alright bunch -- if in need of a little fasion advice. <grins> Yeah, some people are probably going to be pretty unhappy with you at first, and some people might be pretty unhappy with me for saying any of this, but c'est la vie. Welcome to Second Life... feel free to drop by for some joe if you're in the neighborhood.

Like Deeblue, I think it may be time to slip into character a lil more often -- and frankly, Ms. Muse likes her guns. So it seems we have something in common already! <grins>

Im totally with Snhitzel on this, he was doing most of the main construction on the base, I was going along behind him touching things up. I was totally absorbed in my work when I got killed, and the huge firefight erupted. I'd love to just finish the base up and get it looking good, meet some people, and check out the rest of the world.

Oh and, BTW, I have a pretty good fashion sence Lyra, when I'm not on duty :p

I can see it now.. "That's not fried chicken, those are AXIS PARTS!" And alrighty Catapult, you got it!

Now I'm actually looking FORWARD to meeting you wacky people in more than just a cursory way. I think once this "he shot, she shot" thing dies down we're all going to have a great time together.

I expect to see a scripted gunner game from you guys soon!

The Outlands, war games, and you
04-17-2003 13:22
Hi All,

Based on the posts that we are seeing here, I think it's fair to expect that lots of online gamers from "other" online services may be in-world tonight. Welcome! We think that you may find Second Life a great place with a very different community. Please be respectful of the residents who may not be familiar with the play styles of community from whence you came.

As we are expecting a number of new players, I would like to address a host of probable issues that will affect both new residents, and landowners in the outlands. Some things to consider are:

-Residents in the outlands may find themselves in the position of defending their land.
-New resident expecting to be able to shoot lots of other people without provocation may find themselves becoming very unpopular.
-Sim framerates in the Outlands will probably slow down. Really slow sims (what we call a simulator-spin-lock) will get rebooted.

The short History of the outlands:
Second Life was designed to be a creative space with infinite possibilities. Among the possibilities that we knew residents would want to see would be the ability to play games that involve a certain amount of destruction. To that end, we built the outlands, and designed a "health" feature so that people "could" die.
The Outlands were built to accommodate this play style.
Our first group of residents almost never went to the Outlands. They knew they could die, and they were plainly not interested in "that" particular play style, so they didn't go there.
A new group of residents then realized that not only was land cheap, but plentiful. Realizing that there wasn't a great deal of violence (yet), a lot of people moved out there.
Soon after, a group of other online game players who saw the outlands for what it was originally designed, moved/planned/plotted there accordingly.
Recently (as of last night), the newer residents began war games in the outlands, and understandably, the current residents were (or might be) a little upset that the land they so carefully cultivated is now being usurped.

Some simple advice:
-Set your land to "no outside scripts". This can be done by "turning off scripts" on your land that you don't own. This new feature has been implemented with this type of situation in mind. The unfortunate side-effect of this problem is that your friend wearing the propeller hat will not be able to show it to you unless you turn the script permissions on, but this may be an acceptable situation when you consider that the alternative is dying and respawning at your home location every few seconds.

-Be careful of negative ratings. Assuming that other residents will probably rate you negatively if you randomly shoot people, you may want to consider setting up your own rules. For example, "persons wearing <this> item are playing, all others are not". If you have too many negative ratings, you will not be able to build any items, rendering your weapons useless.

-Consider a move. The outlands started as a relatively benign area, but was always designed to be a "more violent". Linden Lab will continue freeing up land for more people to purchase. As a side note, the land on Lusk court has a pseudo-building code, and an impressive amount of fantastic structures. If you are looking for a change of scenery, its not a bad place.

- Abuse reports. File them if you are not in the outlands, but someone is acting like you are.

Some things that Linden Lab is keeping an eye on:
Resident behavior as typically determined the way we expand the world. Assuming that lots of people are having fun playing "war games", we CAN put up a sim that would be dedicated to this particular play style. We won't be able to do it for a few weeks (three, we think) but we will keep a close eye on how many people are playing.

Last note:
Cory has made some additions to the tower so you can play capture the flag.
To "own" the tower, get to the top and touch the hand. A message will say "name of person" has the tower, and rebroadcast it every 10 seconds until someone else takes it. If you fly outside of the immediate area (20 meters) you will lose possession of the tower. Have fun.

We are looking forward to seeing what happens. This should be fun. I'd really like to thank the many folks who have posted here and kept the conversation both lively and informative.

Best Wishes,
Linden Lab and the Second Life team

LOL! THREE WEEKS!?! OMG I cant wait that long for a game to improve!!

Heh, seriously, thats pretty cool that you can kick out an area that fast. KILLER YOU NEED TO TALK TO THIS GUY!!!

That sounds great, Peter...I'm looking forward to that. We'd definately have liked to find a much bigger chunk of land...it just wasnt there.

Today might be a test for you guys, though. We are fairly famous for forcing upgrades to servers thru sheer force of numbers. These guys may really load up your Outlands servers today.
