Georg Wilhelm Steller was one of the great explorers of the 18th century - totally aside from his taxonomy and studies of nature - so it's a double good pick.
Originally posted by Steller Sunshine I've had the nickname Steller for many years now and its grown on me, almost as familiar as my iRL name. Even some friends and relatives call me Steller. When I first picked it I didn't think it meant anything but came to know it is al alternative spelling to stell"a" r. Ive also come to know there are also the Steller seals and the Steller Blue Jays. ~ Stell |

I used my first life first name and picked Cartier because it sounded right and a Cartier was a famous explorer. The wierd thing is though, that I give away a lot of jewelry - so the name turned out kind of appropriate for that reason, too!
I almost picked 'Jesus Feaver' - 10 points to anyone who knows were it comes from - but was afraid it looked a little too religious, LOL. Originally posted by Shebang Sunshine Just curious -- for those of you who aren't using your real name in SL, how/why did you come up with your name? #! |

Gah, mine's a huge story. Lippmann is easy - my RL surname is Lima.
Now, back in the mid 90s when Internet access for home users here in Portugal was taking its first steps, I was one of the first people to jump on the thing since, prior to that, when it was restricted to big business and universities, I made frequent trips to mom's work to see the newsgroups and download stuff from FTPs - onto a single floppy ![]() I discovered IRC and had no clue to what nickname I would use. At first I used a friend of mine's handle - Talkman. I picked his handle because he was the only person I knew who had the net at the time, lol. He still uses it after all these years, believe it or not. When my birthday came along and I invited my friends, Talkman included, to come and see the wondrous new internet thingy, I opened up mIRC and there popped up a window that said "Talkman" - which infuriated the poor fellow to an amazing, yet understandable, extent. Upon his insistent demand, we decided to change the nickname to something else and took turns chatting. The first person to use the computer was one of those crazy kids who faked her ID to get into discos and danced all night long until it was 9am and the place had to close. The nickname she chose was "ecstasy", unsurprisingly, which we all ended up using at the party, perhaps for lack of a better idea. When the party was over we had met some interesting people, and so I continued to chat with them under that handle for a few weeks. But then some nazi op started kicking me out, claiming that my nickname was offensive. So I told mom and she had the idea that I could change it to eggstasy, which I have been using for years and still use in many places. Nowadays I'm changing it to eggy because I dont like the drug connotation, and over the years I have had to put up with a lot of crazy people who wanted to talk to me solely because they thought I was into that sorta stuff, and even refused to believe I didnt do it. Most people call me egg or eggy IRL so its been a fairly non-invasive procedure ![]() I hope I have now made this thread sufficiently boring for you to bury it again ![]() |

Fun thread...glad I found it.
Kitra is the name of my avatar in Test Center (TSO). I picked it because it sounded good, has a somewhat exotic tone to it, and is kind of cat-like. ![]() I chose Kothari because it sounded like a name that could come from an interesting, exotic place and would support a good backstory if I were to make one. >*.*< _____________________

Looking through the last names at the time, I liked Wu so chose it.
Among my internet aliases Gaudeon fit the best with that last name. Gaudeo is latin for to rejoice, take delight, or to take delight in. I added the 'n' because it sounded more complete. No I don't know much latin, though I do have distantly place goal of learning it... |

What Kenichi said.
Also, I used 'Ironchef' for my first character in Dark Age of Camelot. I ended up creating a nightshade named just Chef so I'm more comfortable with people calling me that now. Oh.. before DAOC, I had a fantasy basketball team named 'The Ironchefs'. |

Kenichi Chen,
Our stories are somewhat similar in the name-picking process. "We Don't need no education" - Roger Waters, Pink Floyd I saw the last name Rogers, and my very first thought was to have my first name "Mister" or "Mr"... however, the musical insparationalist in me said NO WAY JOSE! and thus Water was born ![]() --Water _____________________

Oneironaut is a lucid dreaming term. I use the name quite a bit in various internet exploits.
Oneiro- is the greek root for dream. Think Astronaut. You've got it! ![]() Dream Explorer. As I said, used it for awhile now, but seemed even more appropriate for Second Life. In game, you can call me Oneir. Or, if you want, One. However, for the love of god people if you go with this, please capitalise. ![]() "I'll take one with me." Oh, and Escher sounds cool with Oneironaut and of course is one of my favorite artists. |

my turn!

Alais is the name of a minor character in a series of books by Jacqueline Carey that I recently read. I believe it's the French equivalent of Alice. I chose it because I just really liked the look and sound of it, and my RL name is boring and common.
![]() ![]() Underthorn...I scrolled through the list of surnames and that was just one that really struck me. My RL surname is boring, ugly, and unpronounceable to anyone not of French descent, so I liked the visual and phonetic appeal of Underthorn. ![]() _____________________

Well, at first I was upset that I choose Skippy, I did it cause I was feeling silly at the time and I thought that it was rather funny. It has since shaped and become my SL personality! I LOVE IT! Wouldn't chose another name if I was forced to! Proud to be, -Skippy Powers _____________________

Hmm, I don't think I posted to this old thread yet either.
Well, Simon is my real name. And looking at the list of last names, Metalhead suited me. I'm very music orientated and I happen to like Metal so hmm yeh. I'd probably be more creative if we could do our own last names but I technically am Simon Metalhead in 1st Life so it works. ![]() _____________________
