Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died, is a night I'll never forget
Some of the boys got loaded drunk, and they ain't got sober yet;
As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feelin' gay
O'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play

Chorus:
That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy
That's how they showed their honour and their pride;
They said it was a sin and shame and they winked at one another
And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died

As Mrs. Murphy sat in the corner pouring out her grief
Kelly and his gang came tearing down the street
They went into an empty room and a bottle of whiskey stole
They put the bottle with the corpse to keep that whiskey cold

Chorus

About two o'clock in the morning after empty'ing the jug
Doyle rolls up the ice box lid to see poor Paddy's mug
We stopped the clock so Mrs. Murphy couldn't tell the time
And at a quarter after two we argued it was nine

Chorus

They stopped the hearse on George Street outside Sundance Saloon
They all went in at half past eight and staggered out at noon
They went up to the graveyard, so holy and sublime
Found out when they got there, they'd left the corpse behind!

Chorus

Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died, is a night I'll never forget
Some of the boys got loaded drunk and they ain't been sober yet;
As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feelin' gay
O'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play

This was just kind of random, I like the song, and one day I was looking for an alternate screen name, so I picked deadpatmurphy. Across most of the internet I'm know as sflanker which is short for Stealth Flanker, a name I picked up when I first played games online (the game was Descent, a subterranian hovercraft fighting game, I was 15).

Hello, everyone !

I'm looking forward to joining you soon. I just installed the software, and the beta doesn't open until four p.m.

So I'm browsing the forums...

To reply to this thread: I chose Ultra Violet as it's been an online name of mine in the past, and Underhill as a nod to LOTR. They're some of hubby's favorite books... I'm more of a movie person and I've seen both films. They're great, by the way...

Anyway that was the genesis of my SL name. I like Ultra Violet because it's part of the color spectrum and I'm into the visual arts, but also I just think I wanted something that'd go with Underhill -- and sound kind of cool. Lol

See you in SL soon !

U.V.

Nicole is my real name and Miller is the last name I will have if a marry my current boyfriend. ;)
Gosh, if we break up, I'll probably beg for another name... how short sighted of me... or prophetic if you're an optimist! :D

As I have nothing of value to say at this moment and want to kick off my forum postings I'll give you this...

From: someone

Belial - Found frequently as a personal name in the Vulgate and various English translations of the Bible, is commonly used as a synonym of Satan, or the personification of evil. This sense is derived from II Cor., vi, 15, where Belial (or Beliar) as prince of darkness is contrasted with Christ, the light. It is clear in the Vulgate and Douay translations of III Kings, xxi, 10 and 13, where the same Hebrew word is rendered once as Belial and twice as "the devil". In the other instances, too, the translators understood it as a name for the prince of evil, and so it has passed into English. Milton, however, distinguishes Belial from Satan, regarding him as the demon of impurity.

As for Underthorn, I just thought it fit with the first name. Reminds me of Thorn, as in Damien Thorn from The Omen.

I really do like having a list of last names to choose from. It'll be interesting to get together with some of my Underthorn cousins and maybe have a family reunion or something.

Hmmm..
01-15-2003 12:23
No, Johnathan is not my real name. I picked it because I wanted something nice and generic in homage to the blissful anonymity of online communities like this. :D

I chose Escher because he is one of my favorite artists (as of yesterday I have three Escher prints on sale at my place ;) ) I have always liked the parodoxical and self-referential nature of his work.

Be careful -- Escher's work is copyrighted, and unless you've obtained permission from the copyright holder you -could- end up in a pickle.

(I actually did obtain permission from the CH to use Escher's prints, so it -can- be done, and if I'm feeling *really* generous I'll give you some pointers there, but ya gotta realize that I'm selling Escher's in SL too =)

Mine is a blatant rip off from a Neil Gaiman book, American Gods, which is very good and should be read by all.

Also, Wednesday is _not_ a girl's name. It's like Chris or Pat.

Cerridanae is my main EverQuest character's name, a lovely high elf mage in her 64th season )

I invented her name, because I had originally wanted her name to be Cerridwen, the Celtic triple goddess. Danae, was my second choice. When I found Cerridwen to have been taken, I merged the two, and Cerridanae was born. =)

It's pronounced with a hard C, like Cerridwen, but most people call me just Cerri. Cerri was originally pronounced with a hard C, but I've met alot of my EQ guildmates irl, and they all say it with a soft C and it stuck. So if you call me Cerridanae, its a hrd C, if you call me Cerri, it's a soft C, lol.

I came up with the name Ysgalon for Quakeworld, I was shooting for a lovecraftian name (Yog-Soggoth, Cthulhu, etc...). People started shortening it to Ysg so I started going by that. When I played Quest for Glory 4 I named my character Verinis Leviathan after a character I used to draw named Verinis. My Ysg drawings look like Verinis now and then so when I saw Leviathan in the list I picked it.

The Origins of the Garlain De Ro
01-16-2003 22:40
The Garlain De Ro, or Guardians of the Grey in the common language, served the King but when he rode out to war and never returned the Rejent took his throne. The Garlain De Ro scattered into the lands of the Kingdom known as the Washes and became the protectors of the villages and town there. The Rejents men fear to enter the Washes, but the Rejent fears the Garlain De Ro influence over the people of the Washes so he pushes his forces into certain death....

The Garlain De Ro were part of a story I was writting (and eventually they filtered into most of my story ideas in one way or another), so I chose to use De Ro to continue the trend. Underhill was chosen because I intened to make a Hobbit hole and it's a fine Hobbit name.

I got Shmee because when i was like 12. My favorite movie was "Hook", and I always liked Smee, Hook's first mate. So when i started playing counter-strike i used Smee's name. Unfortunately I was 12 and miss-spelled it. So I have used it all these years, miss-spelled and all. Underhill was a random event, because I had just watched Lord of the Rings: FOTR. So that is that.

Well then tooth started in my days of playing Interstate 76' then onto various half-life mods and assorted MUDS. It wasn't tooth at first I was hair-teeth-n-eyeballs but that was a bit long so I shortened that to teeth which I changed to tooth because there is only one of me. And I am sure we can all be thankful for that...

I got hair-teeth-n-eyeballs from a documentary on railroad operators. One engineer was discribing what happened when a train hits a person.....

Bino has been a nickname since 1996... it's part of my last name, and I first used it for Activeworlds and then it sorta stuck to me IRL and otherwise.

Arbuckle I chose... cause it sounded right/cool/whatever. I was going for a traditionally sounding last name. Seems to work.

Like most of the other Second Lifers with boring first names, I chickened out and picked my own name. How mundane!

So why "Omega"? Well, because it sounds so damn cool. :-)

It gives it a nice duality, I think -- the ordinary Western European first name, plus the completely unconventional Second Life surname. Of course, that should be evident simply by looking at the giant sign atop my (eminently taxed-to-death!) workshop in Da Boom.

I think "Catherine Omega" sounds like the stage name of the bass player from a 1980s German Death-Metal band... or possibly a character from a mecha-anime version of Gone With the Wind. Hey, that actually sounds like a pretty cool idea...

Cate Ω, always crazy. :-)

I really enjoyed reading how everyone came up with their names. It seems most of us (me included) have "continued" our name from some other on-line pursuit.

I originally read the word "Maven" in a poem, and having no idea what it meant, I looked it up. The definition was something along the lines of "A genius or connoisseur, especially of the self-proclaimed sort" I liked it, and figured if I called myself a Maven, I fulfilled the definition to a 'T'

For the Counter-Strike players out there, I play under "MostlyHarmless" (guess the reference?) It didn't seem to fit for Second Life though.

'Crossing' had a nice sound, plus it appears to be a more unusual last name in SL, unlike all you Fairchilds and Omegas and Sunshines and Underhills :D

===========================

I wasn't going to post the poem, since it is so long, but I figured if you are reading this, that means SL is not up, so what else do you have to do? ;)

The Maven
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of computer lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
Only that and nothing more.

Up I stood and flung the shutter, when with many a flirt and flutter
In there stepped a long-haired maven, printouts dragging on the floor.
Not the least obeisance made he, not a moment stopped or stayed he,
But without the least expression leaned upon my chamber door.
Trapped against the bust of Babbage set beside my chamber door.
Only this and nothing more.

"Tell me, sir," I asked politely, "state your purpose most forthrightly.
Why have you at this late hour bearded me, I do implore?"
Quoth the maven: "Robot war."

Then he sat at my computer, programmed in a laser shooter
And ten thousand other weapons I had never seen before:
Universes in great danger and a corps of fierce space rangers,
Even my lost love Lenore.
These he programmed and much more.

Images in great profusion raced, alluring in confusion,
Spent themselves and died beneath the fury of his cosmic war.
Gazing on this rich illusion shot my nerves a sharp infusion
Of desire to attack and robot masses to abhor.
To steep myself in microgore.
Quoth the maven: "Beat my score."

Thus I setteled at my console, to do battle as 'twas never done before.
Wild I flew, my foes sent reeling,
Straight I shot, in death sent wheeling
Galaxies to Styx's shore.
All this, but I lost the war.

All that night I warred outrageous, monitored my dials and gauges,
Drove myself beyond endurance toward the goal I hungered for:
Master of Galactic Carnage,
Owner of the Highest Score.
Quoth the maven: "You need more."

"Maven," cried I most abjectly, "your infernal game has wrecked me.
Will I be a wasted figure, lusting e'er the laser's roar?
Only this and nothing more?

"Here I sit, most foul addicted to the game you have inflicted
On my life. Oh heartless Maven, shall I ever top the score?
Shall I ever throw thee over, once more to see my wife and Rover?
Shall I ever rise again and stride beyond my chamber door?"
Quoth the maven: "Nevermore."

My turn woohoo
ok
Its a moded name from Immortal, which i got from a mmorpg called The 4th Coming...very interesting game at the time(still around)
Everyone must have gotten tired and decided... well... screw it we'll shorten it to Immo... so i started using that when i started playing Starcraft and Starcraft:Broodwar
eventually someone joined a clan i was in and started making.. "changes" to my name... one stuck... mostly because i read it in a Dragonlance book ...which was of course Immolatus...
Which i now use on this and CS
other choice was Immario... nah... im not a plumber

Kato just looked interesting enough to use.... i also , like steller didnt want a last name at first.... but was like... hey... that dont sound to bad...

Lets see where to begin, hehe.

Well Enstoleburr comes from when I started playing PnP Dungeon & Dragons. I made it up while trying to just think of an off the wall name for the game. I now just use it for any online game/forum I happen to join. Usually I use the full name Enstoleburr Greyhawk but I couldn't get this game to allow that. /shrug

Enstoleburr is now just a part of me. :)

Stauf...

I picked this one some time ago as an alternate to the name i've used for years which is Bandean. Some of the games I started wasnt well suited for the name Bandean so I needed another. I got this from a game I always loved to play in 1992-3 called 7th Guest.

Still not sure why I picked Arbuckle tho, hehe.

I had the same prob as Charlie.. I usually go by Z-Cl!p in refrence to the old "Z-Clip Near" variable in 3DS which "Specifies the distance from the camera, in current units, of the clipping plane. The clipping plane cuts off the scene at the Z-CLIP-NEAR distance.... The Z-CLIP-NEAR value can range from 1.0 to infinity."
(in plain english,, this is the distance from the camera where objects cease to be rendered cause they are too close)
This was also around the time Johnny Mnemonic hit the theaterz & I was re-reading "Count Zero" & I like the concept of an obscure refrence as a handle.... and My real name is Zoltan,, so Z-Clip seemed in order.. but I also used the ! instead of i in reverance to the old public BBS days when U couldn't cuss because some Prude's candy eyes might melt right outta their skull, but it was ok to say $#!+ like this,,, and i was a bit of an inciter ( no really)..

But The name thing either didn't like the - or the !, or both,, so I just used Zoli... which is short for Zoltan.

I guess I coulda said Zoli cause it's short for Zoltan in the first place,,, but I got caffine to burn before I can sleep.
