Here's how my SL name came about...

I have a friend Alexx who signed me up for one of those play-by-mail wrestling games, and I played a couple different male characters there (I like wrestling, okay?). They opened up a Women's division and I created "Catwoman Selina Kyle" (Batman returns had come out fairly recently and I liked the character). I joked with him that I was going to name my next female wrestler after him, calling the character Alexis. That never came to be, though... I dropped out of the game when I moved to the area I live now.

However, as I started writing my novel, I really wanted to bring this character into it, but I could never figure out a last name... then I discovered the comic book Gen-13. One of the characters was named Caitlin Fairchild, and it hit me... I would name the character Alexis Fairchild.

I stopped writing that novel a while back and started writing a fan fiction for a role-playing game... I was looking for a femme fatale type character, and the name popped back into my head after a few years of coming up with the name.

I was initially going to use the main character from that story, but none of the last names that you had to pick from here matched (I was looking for either Anderson or Andersen)... then I saw it: Fairchild. I decided right then and there to use Alexis as my SL name.

That's my long, sordid story of how my name came about... I hope that I didn't bore anyone.

Bye bye for now,
Alexis

My name, Martyllian came from my original online name, Martyn. He has a big back story that I will not torture you with at the moment, but basically Martyn is a shortened version of Martyllian, a dragon that takes human form to blend in.

I used Martyn, starting late 1995 on Sierra On-Line's The Realm.
I kept the name through my time as a Game Master there and after, into my travels into nearly every online game beta and live game imaginable(UO, Everquest,Anarchy, Jedi Knight II (long list)When Martyn is unavailable, or I am feeling regal, I use Martyllian. When I make a female, I go as Martyllia.(sometimes it is nice to look at something other than a male rear end when playing a game is all)

Underthorn came from, just picking something that rolled off the tongue nicely.

Real name is Josh. Nice to meet you all.

Well none of the surnames fitted with the names I normally use.
I originally thought of this name about a week ago while planning out a D&D game. Sorta a funny coincidence that Fats just happened to be on the surename list.

Zarta was the name of my friends character on Furcadia and I just liked it so much that I borrowed it and have used it in EQ, DAoC, some random MUDs and now here.

Hehe, well I'm afraid I don't have a terribly interesting story. Yuki is the name of a character of mine, who is a total grump. So Sunshine clashes with it. Sorta an in-joke with a friend who knows the character. :)

I'm a lover of Porsches (yes, that's 2 syllables ;)) and I always thought Carrera would be a pretty name for a daughter so I picked that to be my sl name. LeFay just seemed to fit with it. My friends inworld just call me Car.:)

Well let's see... I chose my first name because right before signing on the first time I'd chipped a tooth... and it was around midnight... no? not buying it? Okay... Chip is my real name, and Midnight... well I'm a night person. If I had it to do over again I'd probably have picked something else... Chip Midnight sounds like a lounge act.

I'd like to thank you all for coming down tonight to the lovely cocunut room here at the Holiday Inn. I love you people. I mean that.

I used to be called Neo in middle school back in the 80's, not really sure why people called me that but that was where I got the name. Neo actually means new age or the dawn of a coming era. Neo comes to me as my first IRC handle too when I first got on the net. Now of course I watched The Matrix and it was good, but that wasn't because of the movie. Valen came to me cause I think I tried Van Valen at first and it rejected that. So next thing that came to mind was Neo.

Zyph or Zypher reason -
1) The word Zyph didnt use the common vowels
2) I later found out that Zyph or Zypher meant a LARGE mythilogical bird.
I looked this up and found an intresting conclution.
If any of you ever seen the HeavyMetal Magazine there famouse cover has a 1/2 nude woman riding a Zypher "Wish I was that bird =)"
That and there is a song out aswell that sings about come along and ride on my Zypher can't remember witch song thoe.

End result A Large Mythilogical bird that Crashe's alot ;)

But This is only a name iv recently started using, for my Global internet nick is diffrent. (not posting it)

Hi Everyone!!

Pituca in Spanish means "a young lady of the fashionable set" I have been Pituca every since I got online, even my license plate is 4PITUCA. I chose Chang as my last name to honor a dear friend who died just a year before I found SL.

Soy muy pituca

My first post!

Where did my name come from? I always give my alter egoes whimsical names. Teeny Leviathan is an oxymoron. :)

I have two different nicknames I usually stick with for online games and forums, but the SL "last name" requirement forced me to do something different.

I glanced through the list of last names and looked for something to catch my eye. "Protagonist" being the last name of the protagonist in Snowcrash (a fun book), it caught my eye.

I have a bachelor's degree in English, and I have a very high sense of irony. Giving Hiro the last name Protagonist in the novel really tickled my funny bone, so I tried to think of something that would go with that.

Random is a generic term for an unknown quantity, something that has no pattern or predictability. It is also the name of a character from the late great Roger Zelazny's Amber series.

They just seemed to go together... "Random Protagonist" as in "anybody can be the hero of the story" or perhaps the idea that, in life, every person is the protagonist in their story.

My real name is Kathleen but everyone calls me Kat. In all other games I never use my real name, I prefer to use my sons name.. but people always thought I am a guy and would never believe otherwise. And Cartier sounded nice with Kat, so I chose that. :)

Okay first of all, no I didn't name myself after the store lol. Yes I've been asked that several times :)

Where did Torrid come from?

Scorching, burning
Passionate, ardent

Characterized by intense emotion...as "a torrid love affair"

I chose this because it represents me in the gaming world and the real world..I'm a very passionate person.

I chose midnight because it seemed to fit...I love the night..the dark...and its also when I seem to find the "torrid" within me hehe :)

It definitely suits you, Tor. :D

I was looking for a good name to go with Fortune. Like, Miss Fortune or something of the like. Well, my boyfriend said "Xia sounds cute" so I chose Xia and just left Fortune. Meanwhile, he became Mysst Fortune and stole my idea, darn it!

Searching for something else in the forums and tripped over this thread.

*dustdustdust*

Nergal because it means 'Great Watcher' in Sumerian (and was the name of a ship in the David Weber duology that starts with _Heirs of Empire_, which is where I found it first * ). Which is oddly appropriate for the SL experience. :D

Fallingbridge because I scrolled through the list of last names, and liked the mental imagery that it brings to mind. Forever falling, but never encountering the sudden, sharp stop at the end.

* If you haven't read it and you like space opera, get thee hence and read it. Also recommend the majority of the books in his Honor Harrington series.

I'm glad you did... ya made me think of the opening of the Dick Van Dyke show, and that put a huge smile on my face =)

I still very much enjoy learning how everyone came up with their names!

Did you find what you were actually searching for?

'Antaeus' is easier to type and spell than most of the Hecatoncheires, and he's a Titan, easily abbreviated to 'Ant', marginally less pretentious, and he's gotta be buff.

Besides, I really like the Heracles / Antaeus myth, and the Seamus Heaney poem quoted in my .sig.

Although Antaeus wasn't actually a Titan. He was a giant, like the Hecatonchires, but not as strange looking as they were.
