An you imagine the Motion Picture Association of America shutting down Second Life? ![]() Hank, I had the same fears at first....I asked the same kind of question about splicing a Rocky Horror slideshow party in another thread. I think this is a bit of a different situation, though. As I understand it, the MPAA would probably not have a case, as long as you are not charging people to see the streaming video and you're doing it on private property. The fact that people cannot view the video from another parcel has the added benefit off ensuring you're only showing video on a parcel you own...This would be a fair use of the copyright, IMHO. If you show a video in a hotel room party to friends, that's a legal use of the video. Seems to me this is equivalent. *shrug* I'm sure that if the legal division of the MPAA or any other corporate lawyers felt like shutting SL down, they could bury LL in a fountain of court costs, whether or not they have a case. But then, it's not like the RIAA (which is much more agressive in its attacks on listeners) has tried to shut down SL for its opening music streams to homebrewed DJs. When 1.6 is avialable, I'd like to show fan-cut anime videos, and maybe even some cartoon episodes. I will only do it in the privacy of my own parcel, without any fees. And if I get a Cease and Desist letter from a company, I'll stop. Seems reasonable enough to me. _____________________

An you imagine the Motion Picture Association of America shutting down Second Life? ![]() Nah. In this case, since it's just acting as a player for streaming media, SL is no different than RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, Quicktime, or anything else. They aren't providing you a way to steal movies (Which unless the media industry gets its way in the upcoming supreme court case, even that isn't a crime). _____________________

I'd like some more detail on these 2 little tidbits:
* Allow content creators to dynamically set the price and sell type of an object using llSetForSale. * Give content creators access to more real time information about the status of other agents using llGetAgentInfo. Oh and has anyone thought of a hack to warp live streams into acceptable formats for this? (ie: webcams) _____________________

* Give content creators access to more real time information about the status of other agents using llGetAgentInfo. Oh and has anyone thought of a hack to warp live streams into acceptable formats for this? (ie: webcams) I dunno about the first question... But GetAgentInfo allows you to get information like, if the avatar (specified by key) is, flying, wearing attachments, wearing scripted attachments, sitting, sitting on an object, walking, in air, in mouselook, and away. It returns a bit field of one of those. Theres alot of stuff that we can already do with that, and I wish it would tell you how many attachments the avatar was wearing, but ah well. Webcams would be neat, I bet you could even find streaming software to grab your desktop, i.e. you could have a cam going of what you're doing in SL currently. That'd be awsome. _____________________

Thanks for all the happy thoughts!
We tried to balance dev/build improvements with bug fixes and new features. Glad everyone seems generally pleased. On the topic of text versus video - we are working hard on rendering HTML/XML/etc in SL, but it is much harder than video, so we did video first since we had an easy path (QT). But we are making good progress on text rendering as well. On ghosting - we need some 100% repro cases to debug - hopefully some folks can create those in preview for us. We will definitely spend debugging time working on ghosting in this release. Thanks for all the bug reports and suggestions so far. Lot's of useful new bugs submitted via the reporter tool in the viewer - thanks! _____________________

100% reproducible case of ghosting:
/111/43/32982/1.html Just sit in 1 place for a while near a telehub and you will get all the ghosts you want. You are going to have induce some packet loss though. _____________________

It's been changed to read "Grant Modify Powers" or something along those lines, also. _____________________

There are several free scripts that can create dynamic .swf files using PHP. If you had a site connected to SL via XML/RPC or email, you could run that info through the script, then display the resulting .swf on your parcel. Simple text only flash would be easy to do this way and the resulting file would be really small.
If you got in on that Dreamhost $7.77/year hosting, this is a good way to use it. They also offer QT streaming as part of that plan. _____________________

Hey, I wanted to ask you guys in this thread about a discussion I was having in another thread:
Streaming video does not originate from the server...it's just like streaming audio; SL redirects your client to a video stream on the web. The server should not have any real traffic. And, because you can only see video on the parcel the texture is on, your client is only handling one video stream at most. Video won't have much more impact on lag than streaming audio does, if it functions like people are saying it does. Unfortunately this is a Misnomer of understanding. Yes it redirects however those redirects take up minimal time slices of the CPU's processing power on the server you still have to attain the multitude of other task that same server is doing at one time. Enough of those redirects within the confines of one "SIM" can hamper quality of effect of the sim. Additionally each Prim is a seperately handled redirect thus 400 prims in one parcel could mean 400 miliseconds oftime from the cpu processing speed. I am not familiar enough with the technology. Is this true that a large amount of video redirecting prims in a Sim could slow down or even possibly crash the server, given the above? _____________________

Yay!!! Now we can sell builds with a parcel more easily! Hopefully this might mean that not all vending spaces will require everything set to group - which means that sellers will be able to join groups that are not selling related - and not having to spend all their time joining and leaving groups! I *hope* that this will make the 15 group limit more managable! |

Is this true that a large amount of video redirecting prims in a Sim could slow down or even possibly crash the server, given the above? I don't think so. It seems more like the texture replaced with the QT media is a simple symbollic link made from the parcel of land. We tested streaming extensively last night... by setting up a ginormous screen, people wearing full-body attachments that were playing video on the surface, streaming on giant twisted alpha prims, streaming onto moving physical prims, and even streaming onto particles in a giant laggy particle explosion. Though no matter how many surfaces we made video on, it was still quite good and sim wasn't affected. It seems to me that all the sim has to do is tell the client once which texture to replace, then the client just replaces all the textures itself. _____________________
