From: Unhygienix Gullwing I can't wait until the first SL drive-in movie pops up.
Can you imagine the motley assortment of vehicles that people would use to bring their favorite snugglebunny to come see the Friday night double feature? I'm looking forward to the MST3K events being able to stream video, not just audio! The entire 1.6 release is sounding wonderful, though. I wanted to go in and try it last night, but I was tired and went to sleep in the afternoon instead of staying up and waiting around. My biggest fear: That I will not be able to run SL after the update. My computer is -completely- unsupported and I don't have money for a new one. Every update, I become more and more paranoid that I won't be able to log into SL anymore.. If LL lets people in again tonight, I'd really like to see if 1.6 works on my machine..

regarding the earlier ghosting post... we need this to repro in preview. We will try, but this is the problem - I believe most of the ghosting happens on heavily loaded sims (prims+avatars). So we need to repro this. A great thing would be a group of users in preview figuring out a 100% repro case and then bringing a linden over to debug.

From: Icon Serpentine Though no matter how many surfaces we made video on, it was still quite good and sim wasn't affected. From: someone
Icon, you seem to have done some experiments with this so I'll ask a question I asked earlier in this thread that was totally ignored. Since the buffering and playback of these videos actually happens on the client side, can the videos truly play synchronously for all observers? Everyone's talking about Rocky Horror, drive-in movies, and MST3K but none of these would work if people's respective buffering times cause them to all play the video at slightly different times. How is this mediated?

Why wouldn't it work? If there was a big difference, maybe, but a few seconds isn't going to ruin anything.

Here's an interesting scenario though: Two residents stand in front of a QT-textured prim watching a stream an hour long. They're about halfway through it when a friend walks up and wants to watch it with them. What happens? The two people already watching the stream might have a 100 megabyte head start. Does it intelligently, start streaming from the middle of the file to the newcomer or do they have to start downloading it at the beginning like everyone else? Persig PS. Don't get me wrong. I'm not one of the naysayers here. I think all these new features are beyond fabulous. Just curious about the nuts&bolts of this one particular feature.

Video explanation:
Right now, static clips play relative to when each user clicked play, so they are not synchronized. Hopefully before release we will add scripted transport controls, as well as the ability to auto-sync new entrants to the parcel. So basically, everyone will be able to watch a movie at the same approximate time, independent of when they arrived at the theater.
For live video, the video always plays live in sync for everyone.

Excellent! Thank you for that concise explanation. This is gonna be sweet. Methinks movie theaters are going go be the new "club" scene. Persig

question about the friends feature....does everyone that we have a trading card for right now go into our friends list automatically, or are we going to have to go add them at some point?

musicteacher: I'm pretty sure that everyone on your current Calling Card list has been copied onto your Friends list.

Hrmm. Be cool to train a webcam on my RL face, then stream that to a prim attached to my SL face. So when you look at Aimee in game you can see me RL, laughing, sticking my tongue out, etc

Well, that is, before you come and slap my av.
