Liona: Most people reported it to be running significantly faster.
BTW, most of the screenshots above which look like plain flat surfaces showing a still picture were actually demonstrating a movie playing. Hard to show that with a screenshot though =)

There was no announcement of the preview. The Lindens only wanted about 30 people, and they wanted a very diverse group of SLers, so, they came to #secondlife on efnet. The download links were posted, and we tried it out for about 2 hours. We were told not to take screenshots/videos/etc, and not to give out the release notes/download URLs/etc. Obviously, some people didn't follow those rules.

so is the deal one movie at a time per plot but you can have more than one instance of it going? and can you upload flash movies now or do you have to have a web host for them?

it links to an outside source, like music is now, it acts like music, 1 per plot and you must stand on the plot. but it can display on as many prims as you want.

And whereas in most professions these would be considerable drawbacks, in chartered accountancy they are a positive boon.

I'm so psyched that it's QuickTime. Great news.
Also, the steer your avatar feature seems pretty useful.

if you take your "movie screen" prim onto another plot that has a stream set up will it start playing on your screen? just wondering if there's anything like music roulette only with video.

It might, if you have the same "original texture" being used on both plots.

Basically you tell the rendering engine to replace ONE specific texture with the video specified in the parcel's options. Any occurrences of this texture anywhere you look while standing in that parcel will be replaced with the video (probably even including instances of that texture outside your parcel).
So you could put up a hundred prims with the same texture, and the video will play on all of them simultaneously.
Consequently, any video streams running in other parcels will not be visible until you step into that parcel, and only on the texture that parcel owner has specified to be replaced (which you may or may not possess). This means you will never be downloading more than one video stream at a time.

So, it won't be possible for people to stand just outside my parcel and watch my homemade porno movies?

Heh. No.
The parcels in the preview were very tiny (16m2), and even though we at times had upwards of 5 avatars in the parcel the stream still played very clearly.

From: someone * Ability to sell a piece of land with the objects that are on it. UI for this feature is on the "Objects" panel of the "About Land" floater. Includes: See who has objects on their parcel, and how many, and return them to owner. Yay!!! Now we can sell builds with a parcel more easily!

The number of avatars in the parcel won't matter. The video is streamed directly to your client from somewhere on the Internet (and not from the SL servers). Just like the streaming audio on parcels of land.

From: someone - Searchable Inventory: Inventory window now includes search entry dialog box. Search within your inventory: Type a few characters and find anything fast. Includes popup filter options for searching by type of inventory item...
* Ability to list objects on your land by their owners, and return all objects belonging to a specific person...
* Added the ability to edit sub-objects of linked sets in place, parent and child included...
* Texture browser improved to work more like inventory view... From: someone * Make it easier for content creators to manipulate data by adding a faster mechanism for replacing data in lists using llListReplaceList... ! ! From: someone * Added two new options in the Preferences that can disable automatic camera movement when editing appearance and editing objects respectively.... !!! !!! It's so beautiful... so beautiful...

I want a linden to explain to me why the biggest SL bug is still being ignored. Ghosting has been around for YEARS! I'm sure if they could, it would have been fixed by now...

They havn't done anything about it because the easiest thing to do would be a workaround or a hack.
I have posted my very doable suggestion in the Wiki.
I think that LL wants a more elegant approach (nipping it in the bud, so to speak) and not just a workaround.
