First off, all of these improvements are just out of sight! Kudos to the Lindens! Freakin' rock!
![]() One little question though... if you stream movies as a prim texture, does the movie appear and play synchronously for all observers or, since the streaming is ultimately between the client and the video server, can no two people ever be watching a video at exactly the same time? Just curious. |

I'm very happy LL integrated video streaming via a parcel setting versus a prim setting. I silently dread the day avs walk the world with every prim attachment streaming something different, or even every prim face something different!
But, I'm sure it won't be long before someone subdivides their parcel into 80 16x16 lots in order to stream 80 different videos at once in their own television control room. Hey, I'd feel right at home then! |

I can't wait until the first SL drive-in movie pops up.
Can you imagine the motley assortment of vehicles that people would use to bring their favorite snugglebunny to come see the Friday night double feature? |

How do you get on 1.6 preview it only has 1.5.4 on my comp There was no announcement of the preview. The Lindens only wanted about 30 people, and they wanted a very diverse group of SLers, so, they came to #secondlife on efnet. The download links were posted, and we tried it out for about 2 hours. Not sure what the efnet is, but until I break out Google and the Wikipedia I'll guess it's some type of chat thingy. _____________________

So is it only streams, or can you upload files also? The release notes say it can handle any Quicktime compatible file.

Blah! Where's the text on a prim support.
I can't believe that they'd give priority to quicktime support over text on a prim. Clearly porno's are more important than knowledge. Sometimes, Philip can be very dissapointing.. _____________________

"User-created content takes the idea of leveraging player opinions a step further by allowing them to effectively prototype new ideas and features. Developers can then measure which new concepts most improve the products and incorporate them into the game in future patches." |

blaze, i think most of us would rather have a movie to do stuff (not necessarily a porno) then have text on a prim which can already be done with textures

Sometimes, Philip can be very dissapointing.. Nice bitching on the hotline, blaze. Next time ask a question before reaming out the company on things you do not know about. |

Sometimes, Philip can be very dissapointing.. Actually, i've been looking at this page: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qt/specifications.html and if it does support all these formats, Apple Text is one of them - a bit like poor mans' HTML ... I found a tutorial here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tools_tips/tutorials/texttracks.html Aki. |

The subtler changes that will make a big difference to developers and builders:
I received a half-go-ahead to post from Ben Linden - I hope this is OK. * Ability to sell a piece of land with the objects that are on it. UI for this feature is on the "Objects" panel of the "About Land" floater. Includes: See who has objects on their parcel, and how many, and return them to owner. FINALLY, the ability to make a custom plot for someone and sell it as is. Awesome awesome awesome. If ONLY for the fact that Linden trees will be transferred and not returned. * Ability to list objects on your land by their owners, and return all objects belonging to a specific person. I haven't tried the preview yet, but if this can be scripted, it will mean a huge potential for my upcoming search engine project. * Allow users to query the position and status of simulators by name on the grid using llRequestSimulatorData. This will allow even easier navigation systems, will allow you to have a web-monitor for all your land... a mall owner could then log onto a website and see that their malls are online. * Allow scripters to use llLoadURL to display a dialog box on an avatar's screen offering to load a web page using the residents default web browser. I can't overemphasize how important of a feature this is. This alone will totally change how we use Second Life, and opens SL up to a whole new commercial audience. * Make it easier for content creators to manipulate data by adding a faster mechanism for replacing data in lists using llListReplaceList For non-scripters, understand that this will speed up a lot of scripts. ![]() * Scripts with animation permissions will now time out and lose animation permissions if unable to find the agent for 1 second. No more "help I can't stop falling down from my broken beer script!" * Added another link constant, LINK_THIS. This will allow the scripter to specify the link the script is attached to only. Before, you couldn't send a Link message to yourself. I'm hoping this means now we will. ![]() * Added the ability to edit sub-objects of linked sets in place, parent and child included. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! * Texture browser improved to work more like inventory view YES! * Added two new options in the Preferences that can disable automatic camera movement when editing appearance and editing objects respectively. YES! * "Ruler" based grid snapping when using translate and scale tools YES! ... 1.6 is a huge win for developers! I recognise many of these from the features feedback forum and I can hardly contain my joy over this patch! edit: LL, nice job with your planned "leakage" ![]() _____________________

Oh. My. Goddess.
![]() After reading the thread and sitting here stunned for several minutes, it occurs to me that you could also probably write text to a prim dynamically using the Flash support and something funky involving email out, but I'm not positive about that. (Latin text only, as Flash 5 didn't support double-byte characters, but still....) Very cool. I forgive them for not adding new clothing and prim types. (Still hoping to see that in 1.7.) Improvements to FPS... I wonder how many avs can fit in a sim now? neko _____________________

I hope someone will start teaching legit scripting classes again. All these new features sound exciting but I know nothing about them. I look forward to all this, but I still very much want the "select like textures" in the build tool.

As someone who is ignorant when it comes to scripting I would love for someone to explain all the new scripting options they listed for content creators. Also, yay for drive in movie events!! I might actually attend an event! lol

Improvements to FPS... I wonder how many avs can fit in a sim now? neko It depends on the hoochie hair factor. Without hoochie hair, about 22 or around that seem to work fine in the WA (atleast in preview, I was getting about 15 fps (local lighting turned off since that causes crashes, so can't say with it on)), others got anywhere from 3 to probably around 15 fps, which I think is better than the current version. With hoochie hair... it depends on the hair, as we horribly found out you can have hair that acts as a "black hole" when ever you look at it, sucking up your FPS (thanks Adam), but that was a special case, normal non-black hole hoochie hair seems pretty decent. _____________________
