According to A Short History of Second Life: A Pirate's Guide:
The origins of the 'First Land' initiative was pioneered by Captain P. Nednil, who saw that the Governor was the largest landowner in all of the grid. After a hefty helping of rum, Nednil swaggered to the governor's mansion, held him up at gunpoint, and demanded 512sqm of land. The request was granted, and the Captain told the governor that any new arrivals who wanted 512sqm could get it at the 'modest' bribe of L$512.
Nednil's journals state that the governor's asking price was L$1024, but that he 'made him an offer he couldn't refuse.' While the offer was not explicitly stated in the journals, this has not prevented several historians from speculating about the precise caliber of this offer.
To this day, when the governor begins to stop taking bribes, Captain Nednil will make a short trip to the governor's mansion. Bribes are then accepted the next day, with a new 'discovery' in the governor's available land."
I'd also quote Fundamental Second Life Pirate Ethics: A Basic Primer (from the "Land for the Landless - Pillaging and Plundering" chapter), but that was another thread.
Watch out for those forum privateers!

From: Emma Soyinka Great, this again. Wasn't the 15 pages of the last one enough for you people? Sorry there is a difference. At the time, the major argument was that there was a plethora of First Land. This case, which the OP made, is that now there are none and someone has lost out. It's a good point. At least that is my opinion.

It's a good point. At least that is my opinion. As was mine, I'm just not quite so eloquent. I prefer analogies and sarcasm

Assuming that the Lindens release enough first land to cover every new person (new person RL) that joins (unique - not with same credit card -though you can see another loophole there also), if they put just enough up for those new people.... Then I would say that the reason the land is not available to these people is because non-*truely*new people are buying the land.

From: Cocoanut Koala And whose fault is it that there is none now? I'm going to take a stab and say the fault lays with those who know that there's a system to be gamed, and who proceed to game it.

From: Nolan Nash Who is forcing you to read it? Or are you just trying to decide for others what they should talk about? All Emma did was make a comment. An observation on the direction this thread was heading. She's not trying to decide anything. And to be consistent, nobody was forcing you to read or comment on Emma's post. BTW, this thread has nearly turned to shit. Like many threads here.

Then, when I make a second alt (this one a basic) in order to group with myself, this, too, will be taking advantage and gaming the system, and thus unethical? coco

From: Weedy Herbst I see, you get to speak for Emma and Nolan. Now I speak for you. Does that make you right and me wrong? I swear that people here can be thick at times. I'm not "speaking for" anyone but myself. The idea that Emma's post constitutes some sort of attempt to decide what people talk about is, and I'm being kind, a stretch. If, for some reason, that qualifies as speaking for someone in your book, that's your problem, not mine.

But, because they have real no way of determining who is really an alt, they err on the side of caution.

No Weedy, I actually meant that you are not getting what I wrote. I mean what part of "I'm not speaking for anyone but myself" is hard to understand?

I just thought of something else. When I bought First Land with Strawbearry, she removed $512 from the system. Entirely. By "paying" LL. If she had bought the land from neighbors, that wouldn't have improved the economy, as no money would have been removed from the system. (In addition to the fact that the more land I accumulate by whatever methods which is next to my own, the more tier I am likely to pay the Lindens and the more likely I am to expand further.) coco

If it makes you feel better, I just *disagree* with Nolan's comment. Unless of course "standing in judgement" is the new "disagreement" You are making a big deal out of nothing.

From: Weedy Herbst Now, we agree on something. What is your point, Weedy? Disagreeing with someone is just that disagreeing. It's not judgement of the person making the comments.

It was a question, not a claim. One you decided to answer for her. So yes, Weedy was right. You are speaking for Emma. And, you are misrepresenting my question as a "claim", and thereby speaking for me too. I don't feel like arguing pedantic nonsense today DogSpot, so have the floor. Enjoy chapping your own butt.
