Moi?

Nay, I'm just being exceedingly silly. Just poking fun at the notion that "FIC" is a dirty word.

So it's desirable to be called a person who is but one in a collective of group-thinking, uber-geeks that is leading Linden Lab by the nose?

The same group that the author of that acronym says is holding back and destroying SL's potential?

Cool.

Careful, lest somebody bump some old "is there any such thing as the FIC" thread.

Am I the only one who sees factions here? Anti-FIC? Anti-guy-that-coined-phrase-FIC? Anti-freebe. Anti-baron. Anti-talentless. And so on.

It isn't desirable to be called a person who is but one of a collective of ANYTHING. Now there's even an anti-mob mob. Where does it end?

Bump away. I will still feel the same way.

On factions - there have always been factions in SL, they were relatively innocous things called groups and cliques. It is basic human nature. Online, we see cliques formed by way of geographical proximity, artistic interests, role-playing interests, etc. There is nothing suprising or inherently wrong with the existence of these groups. However, when people start pointing fingers and assigning blame to some of these groups, those groups will harden, and steel themselves toward what they feel is an attack or a threat to their business or personal reputations, etc. This is, again, human nature.

All that the months of flaming and accusations did, was to solidify those groups and cliques into what you are now calling factions. In two years, I have never seen the type of behavior that has gone on over the past several months. From almost everyone.

Therefore, I am left to conclude that the constant pigeon-holing and labeling with phrases like "FIC", did not improve SL as it's most fervent preacher claimed it would - it simply built walls upon the foundations. We need the foundations, collaboration depends on them - we don't need walls.

I've a general theory that says we build all simulations (games, virtual worlds, even things like movies and television shows) for four seperate reasons, and it's not unreasonable to think that we're here in real life for the same four purposes:

- Education
- Entertainment
- Creation
- Socialization

If you look at these purposes, it's not hard to infer a reasonable set of values. In my opinion, if you learn a little, have some fun, and create a few new things - all while being reasonably good to others - you're doing alright :)

The place where I see the highest level of disagreement is in what "being reasonably good to others" means. To some in this world, this means nothing more than just not killing innocents...to others on the other end of the spectrum it means giving practically everything they own to everyone else and putting themselves absolutely last.

Where do I stand? If you care enough to wonder you probably know already :D

Basically, I'm just posting here to bump and second morse's awesome post.
To inject a bit of my own thoughts in here:
Within a very broad framework of shared values, people need to pursue their own vision of what works for them. To deny them this is to kill off their humanity, which is probably worse than killing their DNA-carriers. These visions are going to be very personal. What my path is, will be different from yours. Where we can work together, that's great. Where we can't, we should let it go.
To impose any singular vision, no matter how seemingly well constructed, on a large group of people is a grave mistake, and probably the most fundamental social/political error.

I think LL has done an amazing job of creating a world without coercion and violence here.
Other than some economic and scalability issues, I think things are going to spontaneously organize themselves better than anything we can come up with here on these forums.
