True enough but lets also remember that the expulsion of the jews from other Middle Eastern Countries was a response to the formation of Isreal..and happened after the expulsion of palestinians had begun, would they even have been refugee's had the UN not in my opinion over stepped it's mandate in a wave of international guilt over the lack of action in the 30's I did not fail to mention that the Jew's had been there, in fact I pointed out that until the Zionist Movemnet ramped up in teh 20's, that they had peacfully coexsisted in Palestine. Thousands of Palestinians who had also been in the region for thousands of years were also deported very often with nothing but teh clothes on their back by the Isreali's. People whose only connection to Israel was their ethnicity were expelled by the same countries that today claim Israel has no right to exist. Israel doesn't have a "totalitarian" approach. You might not like their policies, and you might not like totalitarianism, but that doesn't mean the two are the same thing. Totalitarianism is when the government attempts to control all aspects of the lives of the citizenry. Fascism was totalitarian. Israel is not fascist. It is not totalitarian. It is a parliamentary democracy. And Israel has been ruled by Labor and Likud for its entire history. Neither is a religious party. |

(aborigional American's aside) Arab refugees lost their homes during the 1948 war. The war was begun by Arab states who refused to follow the UN decision on the partition of the British Mandate of Palestine. No one had his land seized by the UN. The UN action did not cause anyone to lose his home. It was the Arab defiance of the UN action that did so. It was the illegal Arab invasion that did so. And what happened after the war? Arab states seized the parts of Palestine that they had conquered. Syria seized land around the Sea of Galilee. Transjordan seized the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Egypt seized the Gaza Strip. The Arab states did not create a Palestinian state. In fact, Tranjordan illegally annexed the West Bank and East Jerusalem and changed its name to Jordan. So, yes, the Arabs who started the war that created so many Arab refugees were responsible for those refugees. And for the decades that Arabs ruled those territories, refugees were not resettled. Palestinians were not given self rule. |

I'm assuming the above was hyperbole, because I was in the Netherlands when Chernoble burned. Clouds of radioactive particles drifting across Scandanavia and Northern Europe. Green leafy vegetables pulled off the market. Same with milk. Water supplies being tested. It was a happy time. If it wasn't hyperbole, I'd suggest taking a look at a map and asking the neighbors, including Southern Europe how they feel about being downwind. _____________________

I've read this thread with much sadness. With notable exceptions, most posters don't seem to know much about the history of the region, or the political elements that have led to the mess that exists today.
I wonder. Who here has travelled in this region? OK, if not in Palestine or Israel, how about any Arab country? Do any of you speak any Arabic or Hebrew? Or even French, which is often a good fall back language. Do you know any Palestinians or Israelies? In my opinion, and I've done the above, no government involved has clean hands. Neither do the neighbors. Neither do we. If the Israelie and Palistinian people were left alone to sit down together, their religious issues would not prove insurmountable. Many moderates from both sides of the border have tried to do this - with some success. However, too many groups have power & resource agendas which benefit from conflict. The thing which saddens me most about this thread is the polarization of many of the posters. I imagine putting them together in a room would lead to the same kind of bloodshed we see in the Middle-East. The thing that scares me about the entire situation is will this eventually be the Archduke Ferdinand excuse that is used to start a expanding war? _____________________
