Slow your row there big fella. Ann doesn't pander to American ignoranc or any such nonsense. Ann is simply an idealogue, and the fact that all of you get your VS lace panties in a twist over her is boggling and useless. She panders. Read what she says about creationism, in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence. Hell read what she says about her own writings..its never clear if she actully buys her own crap or if she just spouts it because it sells. Certainly she has her pulse on the finger of american ignorance and she panders to it. She works very hard at seeling her self as trailer trash in prada. How is she a symptom of everything wrong with American politics? She is not a politician, she doesn't lobby any sort of legislation either. Maybe she is a symptom of whats wrong with idealogues, that would atleast make sense. One does not neeed to be a politician to be politcal. She is a political commentator which in effect makes her a lobbyist to the american people, trying to get them to buy into a country entirely defined by her conservative agenda. She is al hyperbole and little substance, and she is in it only to make a buck. She'll take what she can get out of the american political scene and contribute nothing. She is a political exploiter. Some are elected to office, some are appointed, and others like Mr. Moore and Ms. Coulter, simply sit back and use politcal issues as entertainment. Diggin hard aren't you? No. On page four of Godless: "The core of environmentalism is that they hate mankind." This woman is Michigan law reivew and has an editor. This is sloppy, like her logic. My logic, given to you for free, can be sloppy. But for $24.95 I expect more. And all this time I thought ignorance is temporary while stupidity is permanent... ![]() Briana Dawson Yes. ignorance can be cured. I am sympathetic to stupidy, but Ignorance can be fixed. The offensive thing is that in america, depsite the presence of public schools, libraries and the internet, people still choose to wallow in ignorance. Is Chicken of the sea tuna or chicken? Read the f**cking can. Ann Coulter knows better, but choose to dumbdown to make money from other people who chose not to be knowledgeable. She is worse than Jessica Simpson with a law degree. _____________________

A wise man once said... Yes they do. Because people like to feel better by flaming others who disagree with our closely held positions. Also humans in general are bitchers, not praisers. Thus we operate in a society that is run by the gripe. For example, a controversial billboard spawns a number of complaints. The corporation advertising on the billboard takes it down. The corporation has sone Idea of the number of people offended by the billboard, but has no idea of the number of people who thought it was funny, or did not care one way or another. People don't call and give praise, not do they call when they are neutral. But a person with a gripe always calls, and they get results. thus in the forums, people come to gripe. They come to vent, or to see if other people feel the same way, and frankly SL, LL and american politcs gives people plenty to gripe about. But hey, if we don't like something, chances are we can accomplish two things by griping online: 1 we can find others who feel the same way and form a dog pack of braying houds with the same gripe; and 2. we can find dissenting victims to unleash our braying dogpack upon. We can eviscerate and ostracize this poor hapless dissedent, and there by may oursleves look goo in fron t of the pack, and make the pack feel better for demonstarting is obvious superiority to the hapless dissenter. Guess you were right. -Kiamat Dusk _____________________

Ah, it was a bit of trickery. I had assumed that Briana had made a typo and meant ideologue, which is what you are talking about. However, in a followup post, she very specifically stated idealogue, which is a person given to fanciful ideas. I'd say Ann Coulter fits that profile pretty well. Ann Coulter is also a demagogue, which you described well. Actually, if you use dictionary.com you get a simple definition: "person given to fanciful ideas". I prefer to use: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/idealogue - a dictionary with a real history which also states idealogue is: an often blindly partisan advocate or adherent of a particular ideology. So, once again I say, ideAlogue. Briana Dawson _____________________

I would've been able to say something back, but Strom Thurmond died. Well, that's what they claim. Like Cheney, I suspect he's secretly a lich. _____________________

I haven't been following this thread. I consider Ann Coulter to be entertainment, not a source of serious ideas. I don't care if that makes her an ideologue or a demogogue, it really doesn't matter to me. She's extremely bright with a razor-sharp, irreverent wit, and I admire those qualities, politics aside. I disagree with her on abortion, evolution and a number of other issues, but it's never stopped me from enjoying her slinky blonde attack-dog demeanor.
Imagine my shock when I read this piece from none other than Susan Estrich. Estrich was on the Dukakis campaign (first woman to head a US Presidential campaign) and a former staffer for Ted Kennedy. Currently she's a contributing editor to the L.A. Times. Not exactly your normal right-wing apologist. Ann Coulter and Me, Tipper and Hillary Wednesday, June 14, 2006 By Susan Estrich LOS ANGELES — I'm not writing this to bury Ann Coulter. I fight to give women a voice on television and in the world of opinions, and I make it a point not to discriminate myself. Over the years, I've befriended most of the young conservatives as they've faced the same struggles I did to be heard. Ann included. In Ann's case, because I do respect her intelligence, I am forever trying to bring her in from the edge and her response is to point out that it is only because of where she stands that anyone sees her at all. If she weren't outrageous -- if she didn't take it those extra steps -- "no one" would pay attention. That is the thesis of Ann's life. If she were not a thin, gun-toting, half-naked, over-the-line arch-conservative, long blonde haired bombshell-- that is, if she were just a size 4, well-suited, TV coiffed conservative woman-- she'd go nowhere. And she always laughs at me because I, of all people, know that. It isn't just ideology, stupid. It's gender, too. And here's the test of it: Show me a more moderate Ann. Show me a more moderate version of Ann who has made it by taking the essence of Ann's ideas and eating more and going to fewer extremes. And I defy you to find them… Certainly not many. So what do you do if you're a woman and you want your views to be heard? Well, I'm a woman, and I don't do what Ann does, and most of us don't. (We also don't make as much in speech fees as Ann, but don't get me started.) I don't pretend to be a better person than Ann. She has thicker skin than me. I couldn't take that much hate, to tell the truth. And I don't want fame that badly. Not enough. But I watch guys who play two degrees away from her sit in judgment of her as if they are in a different game, even as they "make ratings" on her, and the hypocrisy of it appalls me. You don't want to play, don't have her on. She's only doing it for you. The audience becomes the fool in that game. No wonder it leaves everyone with an ugly taste. So find something else in the book to love or hate, or maybe even just like or dislike. When I talk to her, I tend to ignore the "Anne-isms" if I can and focus on what she actually has to say, and sometimes we get somewhere. But at least we're not hiding the ball. _____________________

Makes me wonder about women being taken seriously. Only Slightly related tangent did you see the last episode of Commander in Chief last night? It features an attempt to get the ERA ratified and a Strongly conservative woman leader of the Florida State Senate reminded she wouldnt be where she is if it hadnt been for the Liberal women's movement. Sadly thats the last episode .. |

A wise man once said... Guess you were right. -Kiamat Dusk Of course I am right. I'm jake. And yes, I will gripe and bitch about the ignorance that grips america and degrades the human condition. The willful choice to ignore light and reason, to ignore science and four thousand years of humanist tradition, in favor of creationism and the narrow acceptance and imposition of the christian myth on all of america. The conservative movement is really the reactionary movement, and it is busy placing us at the dawn of a new dark age. Once superstition replaces reason, we have taken the first step toward decivilization. The Ann Coulters, the Rush limbaughs, the Michael Moores, the Jessica Simpsons, and the George W Bushes are all symptoms. And I happily rail against these symptoms. For the same reason I rail against disney's remodelled tommorrow land-it robs us of our vision of the future, placing us in some victorian steam punk Jules Vernian vision. We are looking to hard at the mythology of a past that never was, hiding our collective heads like an ostritch because the future is too difficult and too challenging to face. I don't hate Ann Coulter because she is conservative, I hate her because she promulgates ignorance, and she should know better. _____________________

After that it'll be just a short matter of time before yet another renaisance, and once again churches get filles with huge paintings of naked men (Michelangelo style etc). ![]() _____________________
