I can't think how Tiscali can be to blame ..baffling ..
Internet connection is fine apart from SL currently locked out and downloading the new first look viewer ( I was on before 4pm GMT) Chang, |

I can log in with the first look viewer but again I can't TP anywhere without getting logged out ..
I still think it is SL and not Tiscali .. if it was a problem at tiscali why would the first look viewer allow me to log in and the regular one not .. different port? one that is not filtered by Tiscali? still why would it be time related? ie locked out between 4pm and 11pm GMT I suppose that also applies to SL Chang, (clutching at straws) |

Internet connection is fine apart from SL currently locked out and downloading the new first look viewer ( I was on before 4pm GMT) Chang, The tiscali forums are simply bursting to the seams with complaints Chang, there are pages upon pages of them & yes they do port block too & traffic shape - what's more they won't even let you know about it http://www.tiscali.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=215 Second Life & tiscali http://www.tiscali.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=121061&referrerid=18669 Another unhappy customer http://www.reviewcentre.com/review230762.html oh and more http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070122152401AAet5zm Tiscali are hugely oversubscribed & simply cannot provide the service they want you to think you're buying from them. This is why I have left them. Although, there are massive issues around the SL metaverse with with connection speed, I do think this is to do with SL as well.......that can't be fixed maybe. A great site for researching new ISP's are either http://dslzoneuk.net or http://ispreview.co.uk |

Cheri thank you for that info and I am now looking for another ISP.
It's 2005 GMT and I am in the phantom zone so no surprise there then. Does anyone know if I just leave it at this phantom zone for 'however long' will I ever log in properly or do I have to keep quitting and trying again? |

Today Is A Good Day

Well............I hate to say this but.
Sure I looked at Tiscali's forums and the complaints they had had....but then I checked BT's, Wannadoos, AOL's, Orange, NTL.... Really truth is there is not the perfect ISP out there in the UK anyway...If I recall Optus and Bigpond in Australia were also a pain in my butt at times too. I have logged into SL several times now and its now over a week and prior to the last upgrade that I had the dark wilderness with the setting sun over a murkey black sea. Was on line last night from 8.30pm to 5am without a boot out or any hitches - Yes I was that sad and yes I am shattered but what the hell. So for me I am going to go back to my original feeling and that it IS sometimes just the glitches that happen in an online game that is massive in content and participation. I am sure all at Linden are fully aware of the problems we have from time to time and are doing all they can to make the game run as smoothley as possible - Afterall its in THEIR interest nevermind ours !!! I wont be dumping Tiscali for now, I am more than happy that my PC has more than enough guts to handle SL .So for me at t least for now this thread ends... Good luck to Chang and the others that have experienced problems.... |

Does anyone know if I just leave it at this phantom zone for 'however long' will I ever log in properly or do I have to keep quitting and trying again? You're welcome! tiscali are to blame for intermittent connections - which in terms of SL is fatal, as different sims also affect connections it seems, so this coupled is a mare!!! The Port blocking issue is still possible from tiscali too. It might be worth checking the intergrity of your exchange as well, with BT Wholesale, if there's any problems at the moment, they may already be investigating it. The other thing is, yes I'm still crashing but removing Norton Internet Security has made a massive difference to my system altogether, I was able to connect last night when the previous few nights were impossible, and furthermore my Cpu wasn't cringing either at 100% - it was averaging at 70%, that is a major difference to me ![]() AVG is a great free anti-virus programme which I recommend, I had it many moons ago, but for some reason purchased Norton in a lapse of logic!! Goodluck ^^ _____________________

I am back 'connecting to region' have sent so many crash reports I think the crash logger has crashed!
I am torn between blaming Tiscali for all my woes (they are a bit slow at times) or this client as I never had half this trouble before. *goes off to get First Viewer as it seems to allow connection* |

Cheri I didn't see your post at all and yet you posted 2 mins before me.
Did I say Tiscali was slow? And this is allegedly 2.2mbps. (excuse me while I have a quiet giggle). I d/loaded First Look Viewer and the speed of connection is amazing. Unfortunately it says my region is unavailable even though there are only 14 people in it, and it dumps me miles from anywhere. I can't even fly home as I crash as soon as I attempt it. I am off to remove all traces of the dreaded Norton and install AVG instead. I'll let you know how I get on. *fingers crossed* *touches wood* *hunts neighbourhood for black cats* |

Checho,
which ISP? what times are you trying to log in? I have trouble between approx 4pm and 11pm GMT my ISP is Tiscali with whom I am currently discussing the problem --my current thoughts are: they are filtering peer to peer activity during peak times ... I notice that the point of failure is when SL tries to accept a connection from the internet ... like a peer to peer program does) for info: I am using the first look viewer successfully right now .. it is a pain having to quit in order to TP (I have to log in directly to each region as Tp does not work in first look viewer) but desperate times calls for desperate measures .. regards Chang |

My ISP is Speedy (Argentina).
Im having the same trouble with First Look. I tested at all hours since yesterday. From the "rush hour" with almost 30K residents to the less overloaded hour with 14K residents. This is the most I can get: ![]() Im sure it mst be some network trouble. Strange that this is coincident with the last update for me... Being more exact: all was fine until I installed the new First Look. After that, inmediatelly after that, I cannot enter with any client even after uninstalling them completely and reinstalling. _____________________

I got a sensible answer from Tiscali
02-07-2007 14:04
easier than I thought it might be. Hmmmm.
they block p2p 6pm-11pm as a fair use policy. I asked how many tiscali customers going through my local exchange and can we petition for more bandwidth and he said our exchange does not yet come under LLU so I'd have to speak to BT - but then he added even if I did that and they can give me 8meg I would still be blocked p2p 6pm-11pm because it's standard across the country. I said other ISPs do not do this and he said they don't now but they will in the future |

good work Zvijezda!
02-07-2007 14:43
think we might finally have a logical reason for our troubles ...
this leaves us with a problem though .. it is not going to get any better also the first look viewer does work . why? it might be time to tell SL support about this development .. |

Thank you Chang, but it was Urah who pointed me in the direction of asking directly about p2p.
The first look viewer uses different ports to the released client. Maybe what we need to ask if there is anyway we, as end users, can specify which ports our client uses. As I am supposed to be on an unlimited, uncapped contract I now need to find out how this affects contract cancellation. After all, they are clearly not providing the service I am paying for. I'll let you know if I get any more reasonable replies. |

one final thing for tonight - this is the Tiscali fair use Policy that is NOT mentioned in my contract and the e-mails that it is claimed are sent ... NOT delivered.

I've tried clearing the cache, but that was no help. However, if I wait until the Lindens have gone home (late evening PST, early morning GMT) I can connect without any problem. It feels like they may be using something "experimental" during office hours which is causing the problem, but it can't be affecting everyone. yeah they are playing WoW on our dime ![]() _____________________
There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.
