Just to keep things moving along, here are my latest experiences.

In short, the problem is still the same. I'm consistently unable to connect to the
Asset Server during "office hours" (PST) while at other times (using the same
computer and firewall) I connect with no problem.

I connected at about 11pm (PST) on Saturday and again at about 5am (PST), with
no trouble. Then, at about 7.20am (PST), the client locked up and eventually exited
after losing contact. I waited 10 minutes and tried to log in again and, much to my
surprise, managed to connect only to lock up again about 15 minutes later. Again,
I re-connected successfully. Then, at a couple of minutes after 8am (PST), the
client locked up for the last time. Now, whenever I try and connect, I too end up
in the "Phantom Zone" after the Asset Server has timed out.

I remain convinced that something is changing on the servers or the network from
day to night. All I know is that is isn't my firewall settings and it certainly is not
my graphics card.

As an interesting footnote, I did manage to connect at about 2pm (PST) on Thursday
(the day after the update). I didn't have the opportunity to stay on for long, but it
was enough to re-kindle my optimism (silly me).

Im completely new to SL and just downloaded and installed it for the first time. I too am having long connection to region periods and ending up in this "phanton zone". At first I thought that it was my connection or my pc couldnt run it properly until I found this forum. Really hope what ever the cause is gets solved soon as I havent even so much as seen my character for the first time.
Please post any further solutions and progress and I shall do the same and hopefully see you all in world soon.

I have been having the same problem and so has a friend of mine. I only joined last week, but she has been having the problem since the first update since Christmas.

She keeps getting put in the Phantom Zone when she does eventually log in. Most of the time she just keeps getting the freeze during log in and then it crashes. She has also had it freeze up on her several times while playing the game. Once when in a particularly delicate situation that she couldnt log back in to try and sort out, which was very very frustrating.

I hope they do something to sort it out very very soon because as much as I and she love SL, its getting beyond a joke and we are soon going to lose interest.

Its getting stupid
02-04-2007 12:55
Yesterday was a great day....got in and had a great time....

Today its ball cocks....I get in and have a little interaction meet a few people etc and then what....it freezes and stops responding....

So after several attempts where what a surprise i get in then freeze the second sand says hi or moves

So here I am now having reinstalled 10 times today.....I connect I get as far as precaching and then it stops responding.....I check the status and the grid says its down for maintainance....so THATS WHy hmmm....i checl 5 mins later its open so i try to connect and guess what....it freezes on precaching arghhhhhhhhh.

I am not technical ...I do though have a pc that has a GB of ram and a suitable processor...I have 2.3 download on the net ....soon to be up to 8meg....I also run one of the best Invidia GForce graphics cards so I KNOW that Sl should run ok....after all it has run well yesterday and plenty of times before !!!!!

I WANT to invest quite a bit into SL and actually make it to a degree where I only need RL work part time ( or not at all ) I think the concept of SL is pure genius but.......

My on line relationships are faltering ...If I had an SL dog it would have been taken away by now.....From having a very nice SL sex life I now live like the pope ( and ok this is a road we dont want to go down ) and if I had a business on SL it would be bankrupt.

Please for goodness sake SL sort this problem out we are having.......all we want to do is be a part of the SL dream

I have never had any problems downloading anything before......

I am not technical SL all I want is a patch or a link so I can switch on my pc and not have to hope that THIS time I can log on !!

now I CAN log in .. what changed?
02-04-2007 15:55
I could not log in
then they took the grid off-line for maintenance
the grid came online again not long ago
now I can log in

therefore the problem was server side ..

all this talk of firewalls and routers and wireless and clients and connections ..
all a red herring

Chang

having spent hours and hours tweaking, loading and crashing......
02-05-2007 05:11
I agree with Chang and if thers one thing I cant stand is fish...especially red herrins...well actually herrings of any coloiur actually...

What really annoys is that you reccomend others to SL and while your chatting to them on MSN ...and your getting no where trying to log in lol the cheeky buggas are telling me how easy they have found it to log on....

I have come to the conclusion that I do not have to reinstall SL 20 times a day...I dont have to send a log....I dot have to do anything....cos whatever I do matters jack......I agree with Chang.....Its an SL thing

O well i guess self assesment is the best therapy arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Am back in the Phantom Zone
02-05-2007 09:17
20,000+ and have just crashed and unable to get back in.

This is reply from LL last time this happened:

From: someone
"This type of "lag" is actually the conventional definition of lag:
latency between you and the Second Life servers. That is, information is
taking a long time to get from your computer to Second Life, or vice-versa.

First, make sure you're on a broadband connection, meaning DSL, Cable,
or an corporate office or university network. Dial-up doesn't work with
Second Life, and satellite and any other type of internet connection
that isn't DSL or Cable (even if it claims to be broadband) doesn't work
well with Second Life. (Why is that? See:
http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=TechNotBroadband )

If you're using wireless networking, you should try troubleshooting with
a direct wired connection (Why is that? See:
http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=TechWirelessNetworking )

You might open the Statistics window (See:
http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=GuideDebugStats ) and see
what your Ping User, Ping Sim, and Packet Loss values are. The Ping
values are the time (in milliseconds) it takes to reach your computer
from the server, and the server from your computer, respectively. If one
or both of these numbers is high, it could indicate a problem with your
network or internet connection. If Packet Loss is a non-zero number,
your network or ISP may be having issues.

You can try troubleshooting your connection to see where the issues
originate. (How do I do that? See:
http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=TechTraceroute )

Finally, the region you're in may be busy or overloaded. Try to see if
going somewhere else reduces the problem."

If this helps anyone then great this wasn't wasted, however, like Chang & Sandcroft I found I didn't need to do anything, just wait till SL had purged a few more users and hop back in again!

Me too!
02-05-2007 09:17
Ive been visiting this 'Phantom Zone' very regulary over the last week or so, since the last upgrade.

Ive just been thrown out (4.30 GMT) and if previous experience is anything to go by, wont get back in until about 11.00PM, very frustrating.

Ive noticed its when the online user count goes over about the 20,000 mark. Take yesterday for example, i tried to get on repeatedly between 5.30pm and when i finally logged in at 11.15. EVERY time i tried, it landed me in the halfway phantom zone. But not once between those times did the online user count drop below 20,000. When i logged in, it was around 18,000.

And today, I logged in around 2.30pm and the count was 17,000and it threw me out at 4.30 and the count was 21,000

Does this fit with the problems everyone else is having?

That said, my friend can get on anytime but she has a 2mbps net connection where as mine if 584kbps, thats the only advantage she has as the pc i use is much better equipt than the one she uses.

the bottom line i think is that the lindens need to sort out the problem and give us a new update. Its very disappointing.

I find myself in the phantom zone right now, I suppose my being logged in to the phantom zone counts on their "Online now" stat.. how many others are in the phantom zone? .. I wonder what is the real figure for concurrent successfully logged in residents? and if there is a cut off point beyond which there is no point trying to log in..

GRID STATUS: ONLINE
Second Life Time: 9:42 am PST
Total Residents: 3,320,443
Logged In Last 60 Days: 1,136,702
Online Now: 24,133

I have come to the conclusion that there is just no point trying to log in until the online count drops below 20,000.

My second life log in page is now sat open and I just keep checking the numbers, I bet I will get in at about 11pm gmt.

Personally, i blame the whole of the UK teen population comming home from school and logging in. That coupled with the PST time zone (and possibly others) waking up and logging in.

Out of interest, what speed dsl line do you all have?

:D Blame me - I got home about an hour ago and have been trying to get in. Its all my fault! I'm not in the UK but in Ireland.
(well, you all might as well have someone to blame!)

Urah Pahute, lol, i knew i was right, UK, Ireland, we are n
neighbours so it counts as the same thing. So its ALL YOUR FAULT, I do feel better now.

Still cant get into SL tho :(

Chang, well that makes me feel a bit better, Ive been chasing around the net trying to find a service provider willing to try and give me a 1MB line, now I know I can stop bothering because its just as bad. As for the geeky specs, lol, I really dont think it matters, its all about the speed at which your PC is communicating with their servers.

Yeah, I used to be able to get on without any problem for as long as I liked, but SL has got bigger since then, and thousands more people have joined, its just getting too big.

It was nice while it lasted :(

C'mon Lindens, do something about it!!!!!! B4 we all give up.

Glad you feel better now Sky :D

Seriously though, LL does need to do a lot - not just something. They need to get ahead of the growth instead of staying behind it, and getting further and further behind. Not to mention releasing completely ridiculous "features" instead of fixing the stuff already wrong.

Oh well, looks like playing at 4AM is gonna be me for a while - if i can get in there!

My last post was at 1717GMT and it's now nearly 2000GMT and I haven't been able to get past the phantom zone. grrrrr.

Sky your timeframe and experience is similar to mine as I know I won't be able to get in till 2300-0000.
I am on 2mg broadband, fully wired , no other pooters running and yet this was stats at last attempt:

Ping User = 248
Ping Sim = 10,000

:(

yeah, still only getting the phantom zone here

Looking at the stats .. more people are able to log on:

GRID STATUS: ONLINE
Second Life Time: 12:10 pm PST
Total Residents: 3,325,936
Logged In Last 60 Days: 1,136,702
Online Now: 29,080

Zvijezda ... 2300-0000 will be 1500-1600 PST .. wont there be even more Americans logged in by then?

Chang I would have thought so as well, the only thing I can think is the load from the UK to the servers drops as most people here will go to bed then.
Thinking about what Sky said earlier, I think it may be a valid point to investigate - the bottleneck not being the servers but the UK-USA connection.

I am investigating another way in - I'll let you know how I get on.

it doesn't work for me but it may help someone else (not UK based?)

I went to the map from the home page and selected a SLurl. Connecting to region was a lot faster but I am back in the phantom zone and still showing Ping Sim of 10,000 :(

Sorry Z :D

But you can blame me too. I'm in ther. and I must be hogging all the resources.

Same as last night though. lots of issues. And i'll probably get kicked out later as well, just like yesterday because i was in for a while before i got kicked out, and couldnt log back in.

Good luck with the issues guys.
Just keep an eye on the amount online, and as soon as it drops log in.
We all (in-world) must be due for a kick soon.

Oh I don't feel so lonely now, I can't get in either. I managed this morning (UK time) when there were only around 16k on, but haven't managed all afternoon or evening.

I have tried logging to all different zones, none of them work for me.

I am with Toucan, which I believe is now part of Pipex.

I have had the problem on and off the last few days, today is the worst. Not sure if it's a coincidence or not, but I do seem to get in when low numbers already on.

Still haven't got in tonight :(
