These kinds of grief attacks, non-sense or whatever you want to call it should be simulated in the preview grid for testing against these kinds of situations.

yes grid is down.

From the Lindens in the Announcements Forum:

Ian is in the process of restarting the grid. As soon as I have more information I'll post it. Thanks!

UPDATE: The space server crashed, possibly due to resident action. Since all simulators rely on it, we need to restart the entire grid. It looks like we'll be up in about an hour.

Now looks like 3 hours.

Judging from the size of this incident I would assume that the resident either spent a few days seeking out and placing his/her doomsday devices all over the mainland, probably in land areas with no autoreturn enabled. (Most likely scenario) then with a simple external e-mail broadcast trigger these devices. Thus causing the devices to have a bad case of diarhea spewing out the balls after eating bad Chinese...

I'm no expert when it comes to scripting, but this would be my best guess as to how the grid could've been brought to its knees in such a short period of time. Rather upsetting to see the grid being attacked in such a fashion, ruining the fun and hard work of those who respect the grid and respect Linden Labs for what they have given us.

go to the last page befor posting lol cuzz i already know how it happened lmaoooo look up for hue moe

Let's kill them one by one.

Actually he was online at the time of the incident. When I first saw all these black balls dropping around my club I simply did an object listing and started to return these balls. When I touched one on a neighboring property it pushed me so I checked its contents: Greifball RC3 or something like that. Basicly its a self replicating prim. Very crude design since is simply contains another one of these prims inside and rezes anotherone apon its rezing. I've seen objects spill over into other sims before but I never thought much of it. Technically if this was the case all he'd have to do is drop this into a sandbox somewhere and let it do its damage.

what bothers me is that this guy has managed to spawn 5.4 BILLION physical objects throughout the grid. no wonder he brought it crashing down.

no one should need to have that many prims rezzed at once, so maybe the lindens should implement a limit on the number of prims one person can have rezzed at any one time to prevent this ever happening again

I agree with this one, there needs to be a system in place that limits a given number of prims from any one person. I think more then 2000 prims being rezzed instantly is suspicious, a security system could have disabled this.

Unbelievable!!!!

I just don't understand people now a days. How can people be so horrible that way? They come in and just screw up all the fun and all the work that Liden is doing so that we can all enjoy ourselves. I hope they kick this person out of SL! We do not need people like that online. But you know some people don't have anything better to do with thier lives but to just ruin things.

I do hope that SL can find something much stronger to protect things like this from happening.

i just thought - now everyone is out of the game and the forums are being overpopulised - will the forums crash?

and will sl keep crashing due 2 2000 odd peeps trying to log back in?

ROFL!!! I was wondering the same thing! Maybe the Lindens should just do the 1.7 update now since we are going to be down for 3 hrs anyway!!!

yes, odd as it sounds this isn't an entirely bad thing, as my programmer bf says, if no-one ever tries anything, how on earth are you ever going to find the weakness and strengthen the infrastructure so, on behalf of SL , Thanks Ollie! You've just made your own job harder!

And he WILL be reading this. Wouldn't you be?

I have a theory about vandalism. Your common or garden vandal lives a sad life where nothing he or she does makes a difference. So they attempt to make a destructive one, and then wonder why it wasn't as big a buzz as they anticipated.

..because it's all an illusion, and life only ever gets worse.

It's kind of hard to be angry when you know that.

It's not a perfect world. The bird crap is gonna hit you eventually and it won't be pretty. :D Lindens should be testing for more than just the obvious. They should be attempting mayhem on the grid if they want to stress test this stuff.

Don't know if anybody else noticed (I didn't read every post I'm sorry) his date of birth but I was able to save a UI picture of the objects edit box and his profile to disk before I crashed. I looked at it while here. I think this was his intent and I hope there is more then bannishment allowed for this type of activity if they can find the account holder.
