Europe Getting the Short end of the stick?

We all love bugfixes (Yay). Strangely, it's been a recent mish-mash of fixing one thing and breaking another which makes this all the more tedious. My main topic of rant is the time that maintenance is held, I'm all for 6 hours sitting and waiting and doing something else with my life, I now have a WEEKLY competition with one or 2 freinds to see who can get on first after the grid comes back up. Which seems to highlight the fact that the frequency of these updates is getting disruptive, I'm all for updates, but it's constantly disrupting us europeans. WHy? Because the chosen time of 6-10/12 PST is actually, 2-6/8PM For GMT people, even later for other countries in europe. Okay, we're a small minority of the community to disturb, but why always us?

Of course the other side of the argument is the biggest customer, america doesn't get put out too much, and Lindens do wake up early to get grid maintenance done for this fact.

It wouldn't be tedious if some of the updates didn't break stuff, like performance, or weren't so frequent (Now a WEEKLY basis). So I have to ask, what the reason behind the update scheduling?

I can understand updates need to be done, but I'm starting to feel I'm getting the short end of the stick here, and now today, at what is 3pm SLT will be 11pm for me, I'll be dead, most of my close freinds I won't be able to see because they're further east (GMT+), so bleh, to me feels like a whole day where I could've got some building and scripting finished, is gone =/

Yes, it is done on purpose to fuck over Europe. Never mind that it is an American company based in California, and a significant amount of staff has to be present for these upgrades, so their local time is important. Why not make them come in in the middle of the night? 5-6 am is not early enough to force them to come in? As long as it is convenient for you, right?

The Lindens are based in America.

The sun starts shining in America in the morning for America.

Because the Lindens live in America, they wake up and work when the sun starts shining (in America). Whenever that happens to be.

Europe *always* gets the short end of the stick in anything that's based in the US.

They're always happy to take our money... but we're always the inconvenienced ones too.

Yeah, that's another thing. Let's give everyone on the technical staff a case of jetlag for the half of the week after a patch. Hell with the sleep cycle.

Seriously, mess with sleep rhythms and your people start to erode quickly.

Americans also get the short end of the stick on things based in Europe. Deal with it, what a ridiculous thing to whine about.

OMG, you are so right.

I think LL should close SL for a full 24 hours at every update. This way it effects everyone equally.

Pyrii....as the old saying goes, "cry me a river". I am an American who asks the same questions you do, feels the same feelings, only the problem for me is, it's my day, and that's when I get to play SL, or build or script or do any of the other 1000 things I do. It is also the only time I get to see my guy.

Earlier this week, I was actually wondering if all the Lindens weren't Europeans and giving Europe the special treatment, when it fact it has nothing to do with it at all.

Major renovations to SL should be staggered. The times shouldn't always begin at the same hours. One update could occur during my day, another during your day. It's not hard to figure out, it's just hard for those making the decisions to come in at a different time and do their work, I suppose.

If by chance I haven't hit on the appropriate reason, or if by chance my answer to this problem isn't all that it should be...whatever the answers are, all I know is, it's sucks. Bad. Really, really bad.

5am is the middle of the night! Go and watch some telly or do some hoovering or something if you live in the UK, SL should be back up after Desperate Housewives is finished. Keep up the good work LL.

I know it's probably been said a few times before.
But we need a client that runs without the grid up. So we can do building/scripting while they update. Then when it's back up it could update the data server with our local inventory.
Of course that means we could actually keep a copy of what we make on our own computer if we so wish.
It's been said over and over I know. But I never seen a good reason why it shouldn't be that way. :D

Eh. I'll live.

Just.

Of course, if one was truly dedicated, one would go and live in the correct timezone. However, I am not moving back to the States. Perhaps Canada would have me.

I'm certainly not bitter regarding my cousins from the United States, who do access to SL at more appropriate times but also have to deal with actually living there. :p

Hey in WoW they have European servers, just for Europeans.

If you want a game to cater to your needs, find a game that does. SL runs on California time. Sucks but either suck it up or move on.

Why should they have to be staggered? It is not like this occurs every single week, and again, they are doing the updates when they have the necessary resources available. Why should people be taken away from their families in the middle of the night just to appease you? It is also not like there are not 18,000 other ways you could communicate with your boyfriend while SL is down. If you can't get into SL, sign into IMVU if you absolutely have to have some 3d fix, or just talk in IMs, get a room at the Habbo Hotel, kill murlocs in World of Warcraft, whatever. SL being down for even a day is not the end of existence.

Jesus H . I thought I moaned a lot about the Lindens but this is just ridiculous. Yes, all us Europeans are being shafted, so bend over and take it - we suffer so the Americans can play when they get home.

Even I'm not petty enough to have a problem with the Lindens doing the upgrade during their office hours. And I'm sure many here think I'm really petty!

Why not just think of yourselves as martyrs and trudge on with your head held high.

That's not really fair, though, Cristiano. America is the finest country in the entire world, so I dunno how often that happens. Everyone living here is getting a decent deal because market forces dictate we should.

Obviously, the cards have been on the table since WWII that the US pwns. Everyone else has had fair warning that this is the place to be. Dunno what else is left to say about it.

As globalization increases, those living outside the warm bosom of our fruited plains will start to get much more juice. But for the time being, well, come on over here and join our family if you want in on the good stuff. :D

I'm from the UK. I don't give a toss what time the updates happens, aslong as they do happen and improve SL. I don't expect people on the other side of the world to accomidate me. I wouldn't get my ass outta bed early to please them. :P Unless its a fine Lady that is lol.

Can't some people go without SL for one weekday night? Tragic if you can't.

Care to quote a few examples, because I call BS on your statement.

It's not a whine, it's a valid concern, and if you were affected by it I bet you would be concerned too.

Same here, maybe a good time to go to bed early today (depends on what we understand by the word: early) :D

Cristiano has a life beyond SL, though, so I have a hard time imagining him whining about such a trivial issue.

Besides, more time out of SL means more quality time with his cat!
