So what was this "method" he "learned", and was it legal? ;)

Or is it just one of the tricks people use to grab land from others?

...

It seems that Bragg lost thousands of real-world dollars because the company didn't like the way he exploited a glitch in their system.

...

This doesn't really put me on Bragg's side.

Bragg learned of a way to purchase virtual land significantly below market values

Sounds to me like he found an exploit and LL slapped his hand for it. Now he wants a waaambulance.

I give this one a .001 chance of getting off the ground.

What he did was look at the auction ID and put it at the end of the regular auction URL, so he got access to the auction before it was actually started by LL. It was not on the main auction page because a linden had not set it up yet, so it was 0.00 min price.

"This might be permissable within Linden Lab's Terms of Service for Second Life, but Bragg seems to think there are real-world rules being broken here. There will be substantial interest in the outcome of this suit from business, legal, academic and virtual-world resident interests. I think that this is part of the reason that Bragg filed suit."

I'm on the lawyer's side.

Who the hell designs an auction system that can be started by anyone at anytime if you point to the right URL?

Oh, yeah, the Lindens.

I don't think "they wrote crappy code" has ever been considered a valid defense for circumventing a system. He exploited a bug to circumvent security and get to data he wasn't supposed to be privy to, plain and simple.

A stupid, lazy, should-never-have-gotten-past-QA bug, to be sure, but that doesn't mean it's leagal to use its results.

I'm watching this one, too. Should be fascinating.

It should be interesting to see how he tries to create the illusion that he didn't know that he was stepping behind the curtain to get the auction done.

That's what the scores of lawyers thought who sued Sony and Blizzard and virtually every other MMRPG company in the past. I can't think of any that actually succeeded, but I may have missed a few.

If I figure out a way to get something for nothing or gain an unfair advantage over competitors, what's my first clue that maybe it won't be approved by the people who own the system?

This has nothing to do with the "ooh" factor of a pioneering suit over virtual property. It's about a guy bending rules on a privately owned system to gain an advantage. That's why I don't think it has a prayer in hell, though it will no doubt cost LL some money to send lawyers to Pennsylvania.

Good grief. What a jackass. Did you note at the bottom of the press release that it's from his own "law offices"? *chortle*

Any more than "you had a crappy lock" being enough defense for some dude to come take my dvd player.

... I -really- think they should bring back 'chaos' or 'kaos' as a last name. It totally gave us a heads up on these kind of people before they managed to do any real damage.

LMAO, you have got to be kidding me. So someone is suing LL because he got in trouble for trying to take advantage of a glitch and lost money upon trying to sell the land he scammed. That would be like me trying to return something I stole at the store and getting the poilce called on me and me suing the company because hey, when I stole the item and left the store, a security alarm never went off...

CLASSIC!
