There is a post in the classfied section for 50k for a movie trailer contest hosted by and posted by a LINDEN. Thats about 150 us dollars. It must be nice for them that they can just beat out all us little people, with the money WE pay to play.
I spoke to help about this, and they blew me off. I know I will get flamed here, but it still pisses me off, and I just wanted to voice it.
(this is where all the money they are ganing from the new account system is going)

You don't think they actually paid US$ to get those L$, do you? I find it a bit disturbing though, because (even though it may be small) there is a disadvantage to people who did pay US$ (or 'real' L$ for that matter) to have their classified listed. Either way, it's nothing new and also really not something to get angry about, just business as usual.

I don't like this. What about the people paying to get their ad placed on the first page now trying to compete with this? That's not right.
I put an ad up for 20100 which is way over what I should've. I just wanted get on the first page to announce my new item I worked on the whole month of June because I was excited. Now it may get bumped down because of this. I'd rather get bumped down by "real" residents.

There's already something on the website homepage about it, and the login message could be used to promote it, but definitely should not be a classified.

(this is where all the money they are ganing from the new account system is going) Well, you do understand that there is no actual money $ or L$ being spent on this right? It's just a number someone typed in to make sure the ad placed at the top. And if there were...so what? It's their money their business. But that's not how L$ work, they're not printed anywhere, they aren't real. They are a number someone types on a keyboard. I do agree the Lindens have plenty of other means of advertising something. It looks like they just really wanted to get this information out there and make sure it was noticed, but bumping someone else who paid almost as ridiculous an amount and had to actually pay rather than just write it in, was not the greatest PR move. Off the subject a bit.... Personally I think the amounts people spend for classified ads are outrageous and really, I dont see the point. Is paying 20 or 30K to get to the top of the list really worth it? I always pay the flat 50L rate and hope for the best. Even if I could afford to spend 20K I have a hard time seeing the point of it.

Since when has anything in SL been fair? It's their world and your imagination. Now go provide some content so people will give LL real money to pay you with fake money so you can exchange it for even less real money. You pay them to work for them. LL are the ultimate cyber pimps.

The frontpage advert says "Calling all Second Life filmmakers and aspiring auteurs! We need your help to create the ultimate movie trailer to show off the best of Second Life. The winning entry gets a L$100,000 Grand Prize!"
I can't find "auteurs" in my dictionary. Can someone help me?

Lewis Google finds almost 63 million hits for that word. I suggest you invest in a better dictionary.

It's not a common word in everyday usage, certainly not with anyone I've ever spoken to.

Lewis I wish we could all go back to grunting. Things were so much simpler back then.

From: Starax Statosky I wish we could all go back to grunting. Things were so much simpler back then. otoh, for teh audience they were speaking to, it was perfectly clear what was meant. If you needed a dictionary, you weren't part of the target audience for the advert anyway. Similarly, if I were looking for a linguistics expert, I'd probably want to make sure they knew what a velar sound was before I went any further. In *any* specialist field, jargon is quite normal.

Abstractly, you aren't really in competition with the Lindens. Their world, they win, case closed.

Stop wasting your L$

They want to promote their thing the same as you do. If you had as many ways to do it as them, you'd likely milk that cow until she was dry. More to the point, I, like many others, do not open the classifieds and skim the first page to see where I can find the best gambling and e-boobs. If I want something, I do a search, and if I do a search, even the 50L ads pop up. Right there. All the ads for Nakama are 50L ads, last I checked, because if someone is looking for Nakama, the 20000L ads will appear in the same place as the 50L ads, and that money is better spent on the place and the products. Ads that really make a difference are on websites and in SL magazines, and on SLex and SLB. The classifieds are where you go when you already have something in mind, but maybe that's just me.

Lewis,
Remeber americans have their own dictionary. The Americans and Canadians on one side, the English (GB) and Australians on the other side, separated by a common language.
At least we know which side the fanny is on! And we get paid fortnightly!

Other than pipping us for the top spot, they're not really competing with us are they? It's a competition, they're not using the system to sell items competing with residents. If they flooded the whole page, maybe, but one spot still leaves a page before you have to scroll down.
