From: Adohan Zephyr The herpes balls are not mine. I did not code them. I can barely script
I have been in IMs with kenny linden for the last 40+ minutes
I have been reported 20++ times. I've had over 30 people send me IMs, some quite rude.
I have been kicked off grid and put on hold during an investigation.
The Herpes balls are not mine and are being dealt with. Thats funny since your names are on them. And even if you did not create them, you sent them out. Watch your back.

I can vouch for the guy. I was with him and a group of other people tonight, and I don't recall the outbreak of HERPES starting anywhere near where we were. If he _was_ responsible, he must have teleported to a sim far away while I was AFK, released it, and came back.

From: Aslan Pertwee Why did SL take the private sims down? Self replicating items can't spread to private islans can they?
I don't undestand the reason for taking the private sims down. I agree, when I logged on I noticed something was wrong because I never lag in my partners sim. About 5 minutes later I got the warning message from Kenny Linden. I immediately blocked the sim so no one could get on it and assumed I would be ok as long as I stayed there. Then I got booted. The last time, people were able to stay on in private sims. So why not now?? LL needs to start prosecuting these asshats and stop threatening. This shit is getting ridiculous...

From: sixohsix Darrow Simple really. The name gets around some, an influx of people join, and then a month later 90% of the new people leave. That's how most games work these days. Yep - One blog writes about it, then a few more pick it up. When the Business Week article started being mentioned, I figured they'd hit 200k fast. Same thing with MySpace, YT, etc. - those will get influxes of people based on somebody writing "the next big thing is bleh bleh bleh", and then a bunch of people will join, then get bored, and leave. SL has a lot more staying power though.

This shit is getting ridiculous... It's been getting ridiculous for a while now. First couple of times, I can understand but there should have been some measures in place now that would either a) prevent it, or b) make clean up far easier on everyone. *sighs* And by saying that, I am probably pointing out that the booting of everyone is a step to b. They don't want ANYONE changing so much as an eye during the time, I suppose. It just might be the texture that fries the asset server? (Not that they probably shouldn't get a new one now.) But it still sucks.

From: sixohsix Darrow ...and then a month later 90% of the new people leave. At the rate things are going this past two weeks, you are going to have to change the word "month" to "week". This crap seems to happen more and more frequently, and if changes aren't made, the number of active users in Second Life is going to start to nose-dive. I agree with what a number of other people have said on the forums, and in-world. Linden needs to cut the carp with adding new blingy features, and fix the problems that are already plaguing the system. This is something that seems to be a systemic disease among software companies worldwide. They are all scared to death that a competitor will get an edge over their own product if they don't have the latest features. So we live in a world where 90% of our software has bugs from 4 or 5 versions ago that were never fixed because they just "had" to add that new feature (which of course has its own bugs).

Personally, I think we should give this guy the benefit of the doubt. It certainly seems plausible that someone took a freebie object by Eric Linden (including a full mod script) and replaced the code with something natsty (closing the perms to boot) and then handed it out to someone who upon attaching/rezzing it, it got out of control. Perhaps even without their knowledge. Maybe the first one rezs and flies away without doing anything right away.
And yes Darkside is right, the nature of a self replicating item is that the owner doesn't need to be anywhere near it as it replicates, Natalie. The fact that another one showed up doesn't really prove anything.
Let LL investigate. I hope they can tell from the asset server who last edited the object/script.

Doubtful. As I said, this comes in waves. Last time I remember it like this was, Oct/Nov of last year. Then we had a couple of aborted attempts, but nothing that was as bad as those crashes. Through it all SL's pop kept growing.

That applies to all of the major MMORPGs as well, but nobody has raised the issue of numbers - considering the PR the Business Week article, etc., have generated, and the influx of new users as a result, and the fact that it's the first weekend after that article/publicity when many new people are going to be trying it out, I wonder if some of the servers are under strain. I have no idea what would happen if a server/sim were under extreme stress, but I've been in a few MMORPGs where it happened, and it wasn't pretty. Ultima Online would start shedding players onto other servers in the shard/world. I think WoW does that as well, or at least limits the number of people coming in until things stabilize.

Let the Lindens do their thing and find out who actually caused the badness before you get out the rope, tar, and feathers.
It is possible to build/script an item that is evil and unleash it on the grid under someone else's ownership without their knowledge. It is evil and immature to do such a stupid thing, but it is possible.
It is impossible to provide the ability to script dynamic and wild *good* things, without the potential for some anus with legs coming along and building demon cheese curls and crashing the grid.
I would imagine the Lindens have ways to see what happened when, and by who (or what). Let's let them sweep and clear the grid, and investigate things before we get all *crazy mob* on anyone.

The asset server was acting screwy for a few days already. Having to relog seven or more times within an hour (every hour, since three days ago) while working on a product, just because the object registered as empty. First time thats happened to anyone I know, you always got a "Loading Contents" at least...seems like a monkey wrench in the process of developing? then this?
Then again, I dont trust anyone on the internet. The lindens know who did it, they'll be banned final story. This person's denying of anything, truthful or not is useless.

Idunno, I came to this game from World of Warcraft, so I'm used to taking abuse apparently, from both community and staff. If you want to talk about down-time, check out WoW right now. Weekly server maintenance gets to almost 10 hours now, there's at least 2-3 nights a week the login server is overloaded, the new weather system is causing a lot of problems with kicking people on accident, and their payment system is having issues now. The only other MMO that I know of well through experience that even has a chance of beating this game is Guild Wars. With the fact that the game runs this well with the ability to have a free account, I'd say things are going better than a lot of you think.

Wasn't this problem supposed to be fully fixed almost a year ago? BEFORE the first grid attack?
