HOTEL and TRAVEL UPDATES

hotels
===========================
Just a reminder to folks still booking hotels:
We've secured an excellent deal at a swanky hotel, the Serrano, for those who want to make a real luxe vacation out of it, the deal is for anyone who mentions "Linden Lab" when booking the reservation by July 18th.

Also, for those budget minded folks, there are two other lodging arrangements (a modestly priced hotel, the San Remo, and a friendly, clean hostel, Fisherman's Wharf HI, within walking distance of the event site) to choose from.

All that hotel information and other travel tips (City Pass and Parking links) can be found at: http://www.slconvention.com/information/

airfare
===========================
Some airfare prices have dropped in the last two weeks, so I wanted to encourage anyone who hasn't yet done so to consider purchasing their tickets. According to Orbitz, prices as of June 28th:

AUG 18th -20th
ORD to SFO = $249 (includes taxes)
BNA to OAK = $303 (includes taxes)
DFW to SFO = $369 (includes taxes) NON STOP
LGA to OAK = $345 (includes taxes)
ATL to SFO = $402 (includes taxes)

So, I hope that helps. Take care, all, and see you at the bay!

Two quick questions...

Why the switch from NY from last year? (loved it even though I had to fly, so its not a "I must get a plane ticket thing" just curious).

and why is it nearly 3 times the price of last year?

I can't speak for the organizers. and I hesitate to even make a comment on this for fear it will spark the usual suspects in to frenzy over the location of the convention
but it would be nice to see this back on top so....

from what i know last years convention was held in NYC because it coincided with the state of play convention.
The convention this year is being held in San Francisco because that is where LL is based out of and on the opposite side of the Continent from last years witch accomodates many people that could not get to last years convention.

SF is also a wonderful city having been there once in 1988 and living in NYC my self for the last 40 years I would have to say SF is a much better choice then NYC.

as for the price last years consisted of a 2 day event a 4 hour party on sat night and the convention on sunday

this years convention as copied fron the Oficial SLCC web sight includes 3 days of events.

Friday, August 18th (6pm - 11pm), the Cowell Theater at the Fort Mason Center:

The evening will feature some of Second Life’s best known live musicians and innovative DJs playing at the theater. The lobby will house appetizers and an open bar, with 2500 square feet (800 meters for those measuring in prims) of room to mingle. The theater has space for 450 avatars, I mean, people. Check out your favorite musicians from Second Life; meet your favorite SLebrities, and share a drink with them! See SL’s most innovative DJs, or just chill out in the lobby; the choice is yours. Arrive in San Fran, get to your hotel, check your bags, and join the rest of us! We’ll open doors at 4pm if you’re early and curious (we’ll make you help us set up!). Contact Drift Monde or Nethermind Bliss for more details!
Saturday, August 19th (9am - 7pm), The Cowell Theater at the Fort Mason Center:

Breakfast, mingling and coffee at 9am, the first session will begin at 10am: a full day of general interest Second Life sessions. Learn how you can build brand within Second Life from Rivers Run Red chief Fizik Baskerville, owner of the avalon. brand (and sim!) in Second Life. Harass FlipperPA all day long! Check out the tag-team session of Philip and Cory to close out the day. A more detailed agenda will be posted on the web site as it is firmed up.
Saturday night: Resident led parties, dinner, and events!

Several groups have already contacted us about hosting smaller, private parties for Second Life special interest groups. Residents are encouraged to run specialized activities; so far, Alt-Zoom studios is scoping out a location for a machinima party, and a second live music event is in the works.
Sunday, August 20th (times vary) Fort Mason Center and elsewhere:

Sunday will be resident driven, entirely. Five rooms at the Fort Mason Center are reserved for groups interested in sharing a session of 20-40 people each. So far, we’ve heard interest from groups focusing on education, business, machinima, and design. We’ll open up submissions shortly. In addition, residents have volunteered to lead social groups to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Aquarium. Got a specific interest? Let us know! We’ll feature it.

We want to make this SLCC the best possible experience for all attendees. Last year, it was wonderful to meet everyone face to face; this year, we’re looking to allow attendees to customize their experience to their interests.

As you can see, many things will be happening in parallel; we plan to broadcast both Friday night and Saturday’s event within Second Life. However, if you don’t attend live, you will be missing quite a bit! We hope you choose to attend!

Can't wait to see you all in San Francisco !!!!

The cost is more because it is stretched out over 3 days instead of just one that includes the facilities rental and catering.

No particular reason for the switch, we had it in NYC last year because it was held in conjunction with the State of Play conference at the New York Law School, plus several of the original organizers were tri-state locals.

To clarify and to make sure there's a balanced response here....

Last year's SLC was placed in NYC because of the interest in attending also the State of Play conference, because it was locationally convenient for the organizers, and because of the short time frame. At least that's the reason that was given at the time. Also at the time they had promised to involve the community in this year's process and to choose a location more amenable to the community at large.

This year the location was picked so that the same organizers would have another reason to go to the SL office in SanFran - which, btw, for most of the organizers has not been the first time for their visits. Even though it was initially agreed to that the community would be involved.

Didn't happen. Just do a search on the forums, there's hundreds of posts showing what actually happened.

Maybe next year the SLC will be willing to live up to their misnomer and actually involve the community in the location decision process.

just to keep everything fair and balanced

The part that i edited to make bold type in Newfie's post I see as the opinion of one individual Newfie him self. In fact there is absolutely no factual basis for any part of it.
it is purely the opinion of Newfie Pendragon
witch I may add he is entirely entitled to.

Newfie,

I don't know what the hell you want from us for community involvement for instance we opened up the SLCC Design Showcase to the community and to date I have had 5 submissions that doesn't tell me that the community is clammoring to be more involved, it tells me that they don't want to be bothered if anything.

To clarify, last years SLCC was in NYC because we were able to hold it in conjunction with the State of Play conference, if we hadn't been able to do this, there probably wouldn't have been an SLCC at all. It would have been a glorifed meet-up somewhere on the east coast. Unless you attending all of our private and public meetings, viewed all of our correspondences do NOT proclaim that you are telling any truths or know the full details of anything.

PS. Get a life already your incessant whining is utterly sickening every single time there is a mention of the SLCC WE GET IT YOU THINK WE SUCK. WHo cares? I certainly don't care what you think and you know what I never will because of the level of your constant assaults on all things SLCC and blatant attempts to defame the organizers. I will continue to dispell any myths and LIES that you spew forth as a desperate attempt to defame those of us who stepped up to the plate to actually do something useful. So what have you done lately????

FWIW. There are no scheduled visits to Linden Lab at this point in time. This may change. I've been there once. I've met most of the Lindens. I don't at all care if I get to see the office again so TRY AGAIN and be more creative with your utter crap and lies.

Its utter shite is what it is. Not once has anyone said anything about visiting Linden Lab. Our attendance cap is 450 and there is no possible way to accomodate 450 people visiting LL's office. I am sick and tired of the lies being spewing in opinion format. Its not a fact, its the opinion of someone hellbent on defaming the SLCC and all of its organizers.

I really dont care if you're sick and tired of it. In fact, if you're sick and tired of it, then do the honorable thing and stick to the promises that were made at the time of SLC 2005. If you can't do that, then guess what - you're stuck with people holding you accountable for your dishonesty and copouts.

It's amazing how many copouts you have for breaking your (the SLC committee 'you') words and agreements. It's too bad we're not all passive sheep willing to take the BS.

Clarification: My statements regarding the SLC picking the location for their own selfish interests is my own assertion. As it is there is no hard statement confirming that fact, but is a conclusion I've come to from my experiences with this issue. To that end, I stand by my assertion, and will leave it up to everyone else to decide for themselves how close it is to being the true case. My statements regarding SLC renegging on their community committments however are based on verifiable past postings and have been referenced repeatedly.

Just to keep things on track, stay tuned folks for some forthcoming announcements within the next week. Many apologies for some logistical delays as Flipper and I have been out of the country for two weeks with random internet and Second Life access.

Newfie I have been enlightened to the meaning of the term trolling and flaming as it pertains to these forums recently. I have had an education on what it means to troll and flame and you are in fact trolling and flaming here. You are flaming Trolling every SLCC Thread of late.
every one of your posts fits the definition of flaming and trolling as it pertains to these forums.
as some one not part of the organizing committee I would ask that you cease your Flaming and trolling of SLCC forums.
NOT only are you flaming and trolling you are Intentionally trying to Discredit the organizers of the SLCC with out any factual basis that is also against the forum guidelines and the community standards. You have stated your own derange opinions as fact. This is a dishonor to all involved with the SLCC who have worked long and hard to bring us a convention we can be proud of. (with the exception of you witch I'm sure you will point out.) I for one am very proud of All the time and effort that the organizers have put in to the SLCC 2006.

below is The definition of flaming and trolling as it pertains to these forums for your reading enjoyment.
Flaming, Spamming, Trolling – Flaming (posting a message that is intended to incite anger or directly attack a person or persons), Spamming (multiple posts of the same topic or discussion), and Trolling (a post with an intentionally contrary opinion written with the intent of inciting or getting argumentative opinions) are strongly discouraged. If you think your post might be over-reactive, or that it might fall into one of these definitions, please reconsider posting.

If you feel that I'm trolling, then guess what - file an Abuse Report. That's what it is there for. Until then, I fully intend on making sure that both sides of the matter are presented and kept on a balanced perspective.

So? Please make sure to do your abuse report, because using your own logic....you are trolling and tossing in personal attacks. I however am sticking to my statements and will be more than happy to defend them.

I have done just that kind sir. I was not aware that pointing out that you are in fact trolling IE. "making posts with intentionally contrary opinion written with the intent of inciting or getting argumentative opinions" is a personal attack.

Please point out where I have made a personal attack against you.

you However in your pursuit to see both sides of the matter presented ( i should point out that one of the sides in it entirety is only yours and not held by any other that i know of) you have continually attacked the organizers with out any factual basis all you have done is stated your opinion as fact and have cause the organizers and others to counter your attracts to try and set the record straight. due to you stating your opinion as fact.

If you wish to further continue this debate, please feel free to IM me. I'd much rather stick to the issue at hand - which whether you agree with it or not, I have a differing opinion of than you do. I'm posting here to make a public statement, not a one-on-one personal mudflinging fest.

If you'd like to see in much further detail my opinions on the matter, just do a search on my name, and read back. I've both posted my opinions and made direct references to the facts that led to them. Then from there, feel free to agree or not. In either case, I'll still be here representing at least one opinion that does *not* match the one that the SLC wishes the public to believe.

The problem here is you are stating your opinion as fact by posting a message that is intended to incite anger or directly attack a person or persons to try and discredit and dishonor the organizers of the SLCC
that is flaming.

you reply to every post or thread that tries to put the SLCC in a good light with an intentionally contrary opinion written with the intent of inciting or getting argumentative opinions
that is trolling.

You have taken every thread about the SLCC and flamed and trolled every one.
and I will not take this in to private you have flamed and trolled in public and we shall discuss it in public.
and for your information I have been following almost every thread about the SLCC and have posted in many.
